Sol: Learning to Love #2 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 566 ratings

Solomon Trebeck’s heart broke the night of his bi-awakening.

Fifteen years later, Sol’s back in Cornwall where it happened, single, shy, and oh-so lonely. Teaching art to kids wasn’t his life plan. Neither is raising a teenage nephew, but with no family left to support him, a live-in job at a boarding school becomes his life raft.

Problem: that life raft is sinking.

Solution: Sol’s first love could have the cash to keep it afloat.

Reconnecting with Jace Pascoe might save the school—the one place Sol’s nephew is happy. Asking for his help opens old wounds, but Jace helps to heal them, fusing Sol’s broken heart back together. However, Jace has his own shadows, no matter how brightly his smile dazzles.

Falling for Jace again could be so easy. It could also be a huge risk when neither of them plans to stay in Cornwall forever….

Featuring sweet angst, hurt/comfort, and second chances for a shy heart, Sol is a standalone MM romance novel in the Learning to Love series with a fulfilling happily ever after.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Con Riley lives on the wild and rugged Devonshire coast, with her head in the clouds, and her feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Injury curtailed her enjoyment of outdoor pursuits, so writing fiction now fills her free time. Love, loss, and redemption shape her romance stories, and her characters are flawed in ways that makes them live and breathe.

When not people watching, or wrangling her own boy band of teen sons, she spends time staring at the sea from her kitchen window. If you see her, don't disturb her—she’s probably thinking up new plots.

How is it possible that Con Riley’s work just keeps getting better when Charles’s book was so close to perfect? Sol and Jace and Cameron—the introspection, the angst, the nuggets of pure genius… I am in awe of this author’s power to weave compelling stories that keep me up way too late on too many nights. Highly recommend.

After reading “Charles” the last book in the “Learning to Love” series, I had to read “Sol.” Sol was a secondary character in “Charles” as he was the Art teacher at Glynn Harber where Charles found his future. I loved that book. In “Sol” we find its namesake trying so hard to keep his sanity, keep Cameron his nephew, and for whom he acts as guardian, from getting into trouble and continue painting. When he finds out a former infatuation by the name of Jace, has returned to Cornwall he becomes quite focused on meeting him again. They shared a kiss fifteen years before, but Sol wanted so much more. Will he be successful with Jace? Afterall, his last lover left because he couldn’t cope with Cameron and Sol who were a package-deal. There is so much angst in this book and introspection, that it seemed to drag at times. Lots of poignant moments, two of which involve “Mary.” If you are or ever wanted to be a mother, you were need tissues. Mitch’s talk to Cam about Mary is very touching too.
I enjoyed this book, but I think there was just a bit too much introspection or internal dialogue for my liking. I will say that the cover is a perfect depiction of Sol, including the hair that never seemed to stay in the hair tie. I loved the second chance that Sol and Jace got and the ending was stupendous. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.

Another lovely entry in the Learning to Love series. Sol grows so much. He wants so much to have a good relationship with his nephew and to protect him, but he’s floundering about how to do that. He struggles so much to communicate his feelings and to connect with Cameron. Meeting Jace again, his one that got away, helps him so much. Jace is able to help Sol change his perspective, and to see that it’s okay for him to be happy too. Jace is a lovely character with so much to give and a great capacity for joy.

I love how Riley ties everything together—lessons Jace is trying to teach Sol from loving him and being there for him are mirrored in experiences Sol and Cameron have with Marissa, Sol’s sister. And all of that not only helps Sol with allowing himself to have Jace in his life, and reconnect with his nephew, but to find his place in Glynn Harbour.

I haven’t read this series in order, and it’s both okay and a shame that I did that. Even though each story focuses on a different character, there is an underlying story about the school that continues to unfold throughout the books. Even though I loved Austin, I understand so much more about him and his relationship with Sol and Cameron than I did when I read his book. Of course, since I had already read it before reading this one, I’m sure my perspective on him and Sol and Cameron was different reading this book than if I hadn’t had that insight already.

    Riley’s writing is just beautiful!

I was so excited to get a break in reading deadlines to jump back into the Learning to Love series. I couldn’t wait to peel the onion that was Sol, the reserved and lonely art teacher. I knew his story would capture my heart and get me all in my feels. I think what I love most about Con’s characters is that I want to hug them all. They are inherently good people who really need to catch a break. This second chance MM romance will have you enjoying the full range of your emotions as Sol gets his HEA.

15 years ago at school, Sol fell in love with a boy. After sharing a kiss neither forgot, they never saw each other again. Now that he’s grown, Sol finds himself raising his nephew alone and back teaching at the same school. Teaching was never what he planned to do with his life, but the live-in job at the school becomes the only thing keeping this small family together. When the school needs income to keep operating, his old flame Jace might be the solution to the problem. They reconnect and in helping the school, they heal both their broken hearts along the way.

I just loved their sweet story. Both men are artists who bonded as kids, and then again as adults over their passion for art and what I love about Con’s stories are the bittersweet moments that allow the characters to grow and work for their HEA. You’ll feel deeply and really want these two to work things out. The heavy moments are tempered with sweet moments, humor, and steam. The students, other teachers, and of course Charles Heppel help round out the story and make this a perfect read to cozy up with and enjoy.

This is a brooding romantic tale about beautiful, temperamental Artist/Teacher Sol and “Wide-Shoulders” Artist /Administrator Jace. The story has an overall sadness to it; like it’s told under a cloud with very few sparks of sunlight. Sol lives mostly in his head and is forever worrying about everything: his nephew, his sister, Jace, the school, rehashing previous relationships, even his art. He also is so caught up in his internal dialogue that he has difficulty communicating with everyone, an annoying aspect of his character. His fretting sometimes gets in the way of his doing, especially with the nephew, which I also found a bit annoying. Although, I did enjoy the commentary about street art & artists. I guess, I was not as invested enough in Sol’s story as I was with the first book: Charles. Overall, this tale is an angsty, artsy, slow-burn romance.

Sol, the artist/ art teacher, sole guardian of a troubled teenager and Jace, the chap responsible for his bi-awakening get together after years apart. Without giving away the plot the characters are expertly presented, all with a past but so perfectly made for each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, made me think a lot about others in the world who live with difficulties, so looking forward to the next in the series

Sol, Cameron, and Jace are so fortunate to have Con Riley tell their story of love, loss, and dreams fulfilled. The characters feel deeply and passionately, so if you prefer reading MM fiction with a healthy dose of reality and redemption, please give the Learning to Love series a try. Certainly time well spent!

This is one of the most beautiful story I’ve read in a long while. It’s not sad but it made me cry. There’s just so much to feel with this book. I’ll keep this one with me. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as Charles for me...

4.25 stars from me. Not quite as good for me as Charles [loved little Tor to bits, and Charles Heppel wasn't too shabby either 😍, there were lots of tears]. Unfortunately, Sol seemed to excel at non-communication or even mis-communication, both with his young nephew Cam and his long lost 'love' Jace. He didn't think things through clearly.

As far as the street art is concerned...yes, I can appreciate some street art, but mostly it's not good enough to be called art it has to be said, and usually makes pretty ugly buildings look even more dreadful 😕 so vandalism, not art 🤔. I am looking forward to Luke's story Luke however, I can already taste the angst between him and Nathan!!

MM, Hurt/Comfort, Second Chance, Romance. A stand-alone read, easy to read page-turner with sweet angst. A great read with likeable characters that meet again after fifteen years apart. I really enjoyed reading their story. HEA.
