When a first love deserves a second chance . . .
Ava Flynn runs All Critters Great and Small, her late mum’s charity shop, in the charming village of Dapplebury. It’s a place that’s close to her heart, but all the shops in the village are struggling to make ends meet.
And when the new Lord Henry Bramlington returns with ideas on how to save the village, life is about to change . . . not just for Dapplebury, but for Ava, too.
Because Henry, or ‘Lord Hotlington’, as he’s known by a few ladies in the village, was Ava’s first love. And now he’s back for good. She can’t avoid him forever.
But Ava hasn’t seen him for over a decade. He was sent away to boarding school after the couple were caught together by his mother.
Ava is shocked to learn that some feelings don’t go away with time, but does Henry feel the same?
She’s about to find out as the two team up to save the village.
Perhaps some things should be left in the past . . . but doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance?
Perfect for fans of Phoebe MacLeod, Marie Laval, Holly Martin, Debbie Johnson, Caroline James or Kathryn Freeman.

About the author

In the summer of 2017, Carol Thomas was delighted to gain a publishing contract with award-winning publishers Choc Lit (Joffe Books). She has subsequently gained best-seller badges for The Purrfect Pet Sitter and Maybe Baby, both books in the Lisa Blake series, and A Summer of Second Chances.
Carol writes for both adults and children: Her contemporary romance novels have relatable heroines whose stories are layered with emotion, sprinkled with laughter and topped with irresistible male leads, while her children's books have irresistibly cute, generally furry characters young children can relate to.
Carol Thomas lives on the south coast of England with her husband, four children and adorable Labrador. She has been a school teacher for over twenty years. Carol has a passion for reading, writing and people-watching and can often be found loitering in local cafes, working on her next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023This book held !y interest from the very beginning. I liked that there was no violence. Getting a small town together and making relationships work was great. Looking forward
to reading Carol's next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2023Cute story, could have used a tad more mystery since it was a little bit predictable. Interesting combination of high-born and village folk.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2021I love falling into a second chance romance story, especially when the couple were young lovers who were separated by not only circumstances but choices where they had little say in the outcome. I’m always wondering if they would have survived as a couple still together if events hadn’t changed or had they grown into the people they are today because of that heartbreak. I suppose I’ll never really know but this is what Ava and Henry are facing in A Summer of Second Chances.
Henry left Dapplebury years ago or ran away from the village depending on your outlook. Two young lovers were separated by the opinions of the adults surrounding them. Time moved on and shaped them into the people who will meet again when Henry returns with a lot more power than when he left… the power to not only make or break their village’s future but to break Ava’s heart once again if she isn’t careful. Trouble is, she doesn’t really want to be careful because those feelings from long ago are just as strong today, if not stronger, should she admit to that fact.
I had such a good time in Ava and Henry’s world. A Summer of Second Chances not only delivers a charming, funny romance full of secondary characters who deserve books of their own but adorable dogs who will always steal scenes in my eyes. Yet, there’s more for there is quite a secret that is about to be discovered that may change so much, only time will tell. (No, I’m not giving that away!)
From Gino’s special evenings at the pub to Flo’s unique shall we say window displays to Mary’s solid friendship, and of course, Granger and Myrtle, faithful companions of Henry and Ava, it all flows naturally as we wait for that second chance to work out for Henry and Ava. I definitely had some laugh-out-loud moments, and times when I really wanted to have very stern conversations with this couple. In all, I had fun here and would love to return one day for even more antics of the residents of this village. If you adore a second chance romance with dogs as a bonus, then you’ll enjoy A Summer of Second Chances.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, ChocLit/Ruby Fiction. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2021Ava and Henry were teenagers in love or at the beginning of it and were torn apart by family. Ava has always kept Henry in her heart but moved on until she came home to care for her sick mother. The small town was floundering and the matriarch of the town was very ill, who was Henry’s father. The people of the town were worried Henry would sell the estate and leave the town vulnerable to outside development. The story evolves around Ava and Henry and the many supporting characters of this lovely town. Funny, sad and delightful all describe this story. Must read to discover the secret that caused grief for Ava and Henry’s families. Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2021Oh this charming and heartwarming book is such a delight to read. First the community of Dapplebury, a mall town that is just the perfect setting for these characters that I just adored reading about - Ava and Henry. The story is full of surprises, a bit of everything in this lovely story with just the right amount of emotional pull, drama, and of course the romance.
A lovely story about second chances, friendships and the village community that was uplifting and endearing read. I highly recommend getting lost in Thomas' writing for a lovely cozy read you wouldn't want to miss.
I am ready for more of Carol Thomas' writing. This was more than wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming (and hilarious) visit to an English country village
This is the third Carol Thomas novel I’ve read, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first two, The Purrfect Pet Sitter, and Maybe Baby.
A Summer of Second Chances is light-hearted, yet it introduces us into the personal lives of the main characters in a gentle, very human manner that is refreshing to read. I laughed out loud many times, “I can’t feel my nose!” (for example) and I loved the passion Ava had for her cause and also the way the characters evolved throughout the story, learning about themselves as they worked together.
I recommend this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Romance
I do not read romance novels. So to have picked up this book for me was a moment of weakness. It’s a romance novel. If that appeals to you then the book is OK, but for me it was just too silly. I will not pick up a romance novel again!

4.0 out of 5 stars An endearing, uplifting romance
Ava is busy managing a shop, supporting her late mothers animal charity. Henry returns to handle the family’s estate and property when his father dies and has to deal with an unsettled village concerned with his future plans.
While great changes are planned, Ava worries about giving into her feelings for Henry, her first love, and his mothers attitude towards her. Added to the mix is beautifully imaged scenery and lovely dogs.
A lovely romance story.
