4.5 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Exciting adventure where genders mix and time flows back and forth between traditional and modern Japan.

Listed as one of the must-read Japan-related novels by SAVVY TOKYO MAGAZINE

‘An original plot, interesting and likeable characters, a sweet romance, a time-travel switch and a dose of Japanese history makes this book totally unique. The author’s complete understanding of Japanese culture is really obvious right down to the fine details.’ Renae Lucas-Hall, SAVVY TOKYO MAGAZINE

'Original, powerful, exciting and intriguing.' Margaret Kaine, Award Winning Author

Two women from different cultures and centuries - and both samurai

Bebe Bell is a modern Englishwoman who is living in Japan and time-slipped into the mind of samurai, Kai Matsuda, who is fighting in the 1860’s for the future of his country in its civil war which changed the world forever. In her own life, Bebe meets Kenji, a young man who has a secret he cannot reveal to anyone ... not even to Bebe as they fall in love. Can she risk telling him she is also a samurai in another time?
Yoshi is a young aristocratic woman forced to disguise herself as samurai in order to survive the war as it surrounds her and her country decides its fate. She meets Kai when he has Bebe in his mind. This changes everything as Kai finds himself more and more attracted to Yoshi. But Yoshi is ambitious and has no time for a lowly samurai like Kai. When all their paths converge no one can foresee the outcome.

And interesting. Obviously the lady did study Japan's past. This has suspense, philosophy, romance and leaves us with some important questions. Warmly recommended.

I had already read Book One in the Secret Samurai Trilogy, which had impressed me with the originality of its concept, so as I'd enjoyed the first, when the Trilogy came on offer, I didn't hesitate to download it. Within a few pages of Book Two, I was gripped, carried along with the power of the writing and the excitement and intrigue of the story. I tend to read in bed mostly, and it was lovely to feel a keen anticipation to be within the pages once again. I went on to read the Third Book in the series, longing to know how the author would bring all the strands of her plot together, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters in this time-slip epic are still vivid in my memory, a sure mark of a successful novel. I would add that if I had to choose my favourite out of the three editions, it would definitely be Book Two, which for me was rather special.

For anyone looking for an unusual read and fascinating snippets of life in Japan both in the past and in the present, I would greatly recommend that they read Jill Rutherford, who I believe spent several years living there. Certainly there is an authenticity to her descriptions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars on merit

You know what it's like, you are friends with the author, you read their book, and struggle to find something nice to say about their effort. But for the very first time, this is not the case. I really enjoyed this trilogy, never got bored, the narrative progressed at an excellent pace.
The basic story was unusual, the characters were very well rounded, not much was predictable. The writing style is also very readable, it comes across as being written by an experienced author.
It was very easy to give five stars, read and enjoy like I did. Well done Jill, excellent effort which deserves success.
