About the Author
Mel Sherratt has been a self-described "meddler of words" ever since she can remember. She lives in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with her husband and her terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer, with some help from her Twitter fans), and makes liberal use of her hometown as a backdrop for some of her writing.

About the author

I write dark fiction with an emotional pull. My novels take you to the heart of the crime. I write police procedurals, psychological suspense and crime dramas - fiction with a punch. Shortlisted for the prestigious CWA (Crime Writer's Association) Dagger in The Library Award, my inspiration comes from authors such as Joy Ellis, Mandasue Heller, LJ Ross and Ian Rankin.
To date, I’ve sold over two million books. All twenty-one of my crime novels have been bestsellers, each one climbing into the Kindle UK top 20, and I've had several number ones. I've also had numerous Kindle All-star awards, for best read author and best titles.
***Available now - FAMILY MATTERS, book seven of the Detective Allie Shenton Series.***
***Also available now - a box set of the first six Detective Allie Shenton Series.***
There are seven books so far in the DETECTIVE ALLIE SHENTON SERIES. These are part police procedural/part crime thriller.
There are two books with Eden Berrisford as the main character, THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR and DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU.
There are four books in THE ESTATE SERIES - a mix of psychological suspense and family life with a sprinkling of grit and a dash of menace - where drama meets crime.
I have five standalone novels. THE LIFE SHE WANTS, TEN DAYS, THE LIES YOU TELL, MISSING GIRLS, and WATCHING OVER YOU. They are dark in places, light in places, and disturbing in places.
I have also written four books featuring DS Grace Allendale, HUSH HUSH being the first one, TICK TOCK the second, LIAR LIAR the third and the final one to finish the series, GOOD GIRL.
I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and make liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for most of my books.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2013I just found this author by chance. She had 3 books on sale and I thought. OK I will get them, on a whim, really. OMG! I found a Gem. This author is fabulous. I have never been able to just bounce right into a book. Love the characters like they are friends. I know it sounds silly but reading this book is like entering another world and you can belong there. You can feel it, you can see it, you can smell it. Awesome writing. Like a movie. I hope they make this series into a movie. I am already half way through Mel Sherratts second book in the estate series called "behind closed doors". I have no words. Other than just brilliant. Would recommend. Read it. Buy it. AWESOME! Just do it. 5 stars all the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2013I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't say I was blown away by it or anything. But it was definitely and interesting story with interesting characters and an easy read. And for the money, I feel like I got what I paid for.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2014It was a decent story. I like the twist and turns that are always woven into her storylines. I had just finished one of her other books and it was pretty good, so I purchased the estate series. Being from America, it took a moment to comprehend the English phrases and slang, but not a hindrance to understanding the storyline. Overall it was okay.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2018Really liked the characters and a glimpse of Foster children’s troubled lives. Nice twist at the end. Characters seemed real.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2014Another very entertaining book from this author. I enjoyed Taunting the Dead much more but that's my personal preference for crime thrillers. The descriptions are excellent but the plot is slow in developing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2014Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Characters were very interesting. Curious to how women get caught up in some compelling, abusive relationships

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
The dramas in the book, of which there are many, centre around an estate and the people who live there or are passing through with their own agenda. The characters come to life very quickly in the opening chapters. Some graphic tales of what life has thrown at them are told with great detail and compassion. The stories are interwoven with great skill as one central character is the rock to which everyone else goes when they need someone to turn to.
I loved the realism that is portrayed. It could be anywhere but it doesn't just give a grim outlook of what estate life has to be. The positivity of people wanting to make a change for the good and give everyone the opportunity to move on comes through strongly, I thought.
Mel is a good story teller. Each chapter leaves you wanting more. The twists of the plot were cleverly written - made me take a sharp intake of breath on more than one occasion. I look forward to reading the other books in the series but I have got Taunting the Dead coming to the top of my TBR pile!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start for Mel Sherratt
I recently started hearing more and more about the author Mel Sherratt. Followers to my blog were suggesting I read her and I'm extremely glad I listened to them. Mel self-published her first book in 2011 and went on to become a Kindle bestseller and a best selling book of 2012. It took me no time at all to fall into the pattern and speed of the book and it seems like Cathy Mason has for once bitten off more than she can chew.
Liz and her daughter were characters I immediately liked and felt myself rooting for then from the outset. Becky was a slightly different story because I didn't instantly like her. Although that was the case as the story progressed we see what has happened to Becky and the reasons for her becoming what she is now.
Mel Sherratt touched on numerous subjects that can be sore points for people the biggest one being domestic violence. She has managed to create however, a story that grabs your attention and doesn't allow you to squirm away from the harsh realities of life than many real people (as well as fictional characters) face. The story had so much going on and kept my interest throughout.
I really enjoyed the book and was so pleased that I finally got around to reading this. There are two more books in this Estate series of books, both of which are ready for me on my Kindle. I think this book is a brilliant example of what talent you can fins out there amongst the self-published authors. A brilliant read and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

I really enjoyed reading these books. The characters and the estate seemed so real. Quite different to anything else I've read.
