See Them Die: A tense, gritty psychological thriller (Dr Hamlet Mottrell Investigations Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 163 ratings

A hard-boiled urban murder mystery you don’t want to miss. Perfect for fans of Peter Robinson, Ann Cleeves, Faith Martin and L J Ross.

Can Dr Mottrell catch a killer to clear his name?

Three years ago, forensic psychologist Dr Hamlet Mottrell’s life was completely destroyed when an intruder killed his wife and unborn child and slashed his wrists to make it look like a murder-suicide.

Though the case against him was dropped, Hamlet remained guilty in the eyes of many, and was forced into a life of solitude.

But then he hears of another brutal murder case and becomes convinced it is the same person who attacked his family.

He gets in touch with Detective Sergeant Alix Rainbow, one of the only people who believed him when he was initially arrested, and convinces her to help him track down the vicious killer.

But when more deaths occur, she starts to question everything.

Can Hamlet find the real killer and clear his name? Can he keep Alix on his side?

And will they be able to stop the murderer before any more innocent lives are taken?

SEE THEM DIE is the first crime novel in the Dr Hamlet Mottrell Investigations series: dark, gritty murder cases investigated by a forensic psychologist.

'Dripping with authenticity, this is high-quality crime writing' – M. W. Craven, author of The Puppet Show

Following retirement, after thirty-two years as a police officer, working mainly as a detective, Michael returned to the deadly business of murder, as a writer. His past work brought him very close to some nasty characters, including psychopaths, and gruesome cases and he draws on that experience to craft his novels: There is nothing gentle about Michael's stories.

His landmark novel 'Heart of the Demon', published in 2012, introduced Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr. He has since written five novels and a novella featuring him. He also released the first of his DS Scarlett Macey books in 2016.

He is also the author of a stand alone crime novella 'Chasing Ghosts' and a true crime thriller 'Safecracker'.

Enjoyed the characters. I needed to keep trading to find out why the killer was picking the ones to kill.

It's been a while since I've read a book in one sitting, but I did just that with this one. It's very easy to read, the plot is well-driven and the characters are engaging. The ending was not totally predictable, but I was a little disappointed with the conclusion, which is why I didn't give it five stars. My thanks to Sapere Books for the opportunity to read it.

See Them Die by Michael Fowler has restored my faith in the police procedural / crime thriller genre. Turns out the author is a former policeman who has written books in another series, but this is the first book I’ve read by him.

The first three pages got me totally invested in this well put together story.

Dr Mottrell was accused of murdering his wife, unborn child, and in-laws after being found unconscious with his wrists slashed in an apparent murder-suicide three years before. Having never been cleared by the police, Dr Mottrell comes across a similar case and contacts the police convinced the killer of his family has struck again.

The story rolls along with a fast clip and, since this is the first book in a series, the characters are introduced and developed well. Even halfway through the book I was suspicious about Dr Mottrell and whether he was totally innocent. The fact he lives out in the back and beyond in a cabin adds another dimension to the story (we all know what happens if you live alone in the woods!).

There were two things I felt not quite right (no spoilers). The first is Dr Mottrell is allowed into crime scenes despite never being formally cleared of murder. The second being the app he has and no one else. If you read the book, you’ll know what I mean – I don’t want to give away too much.

I liked this book and can’t wait to read the next in the series – it’s out in July and I’ve got my order in. I also purchased two other books from another series by Michael Fowler based on the strength of See Them Die.

This is not a bad book, but as the killer is identified quite early, the intrigue or mystery levels don't rise to any great heights. So it is pretty mundane progress as the police and our protagonist try to locate a known person. A late surprising twist didn't redeem things, in my view. Far too many typos for my liking too.

After the deaths of his wife, unborn child and parents Dr. Hamlet Mottrell has become a recluse. He was suspected of being their killer although there was never enough evidence to convict him. Now living in his grandfather's country cottage with only a dog for company, he learns of two similar deaths. Contacting detective Alix Rainbow, who investigated him previously, he tells her of his suspicions. She believes he's uncovered the trail of a serial killer, especially after he receives software on his phone, that when downloaded, reveals evidence of a murderer at large. The crimes have their roots in the past and involve an institution for unwanted children.
See Them Die is hard to put down. The characters are real, with flaws and foibles, and the dog is sweet. The writing propels the novel, keeping the plot going without a flaw. The one drawback is that, although the crimes are solved, the murderer isn't caught. You'll have to read the following book for that.
Thank you to Sapere Books for an advance readers copy.

Before I ever started this book, I was impressed. It had a prologue which gave a great deal of history without wasting words.

It also had an epilogue which told me (the reader) that, while this story had ended, there was more to follow.

The first chapter had me involved. There were many characters that needed hooking to the story. The author tied them all together at the end in a way that I felt he had given every clue I needed to figure it out for myself.

I like the author's straight forward language that presented a picture without being wordy.

I don't like to give reviews that are book reports. I would rather give you the reasons why you should read this book for yourself. This is the first book I have read by Michael Fowler but I feel confident it will not be my last

First time I’ve read this author. I enjoyed this book and the way he writes. From the first sentence until the last - it kept my interest. I had suspicions at Chapter 25 of who was behind it all. There are 27 chapters! I will read his book #2 of this series.

This book started out slow and turned into a page turner!
I can say I wasn’t too surprised by the ending. It was a well told mystery and I’m looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
Thanks to the publisher for copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a series

Having read and loved some of Michael Fowler’s Hunter Kerr and Scarlett Mackey books, I was keen to get to know his new characters of Dr Hamlet Mottrell and DS Alix Rainbow. How would the partnership of a murder suspect and detective pan out? I was intrigued to know!

Hamlet was suspected of killing his family but professed his innocence til he was blue in the face. With a lack of evidence, he disappeared for society but when the death of a former colleague is reported, he re-emerges from his isolation and bangs on Alix’s door looking for answers. What ensues is one hell of a treasure hunt of the sickest nature.

Now this twisted treasure hunt the killer sends Alix and Hamlet on using technology, I thought was rather ingenious! QR like codes of the murderous variety and boy do the revelations shock! Oh my, I felt myself properly tense up as I read what Alix and Hamlet saw.

See Them Die is one twisted crime thriller with a new unique partnership. Fowler’s writing engulfed my attention, ensuring its capture as this new pairing chased around South Yorkshire trying to catch this twisted killer with a shocking climax. This is a hard hitting read with characters I want to see lots more of with equally brutal and chilling investigations (just the way I like them)! Can’t wait for The Wedding Killer in July!

I loved this book, it has a tapestry of themes and the characters have real depth to them. I’m excited to read the next book and see where and how the characters develop. As a psychological thriller I highly recommend. The writing is up there with the best on this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner.

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. Perhaps a slight departure from some of Michael’s other books I have read but it is cleverly written not only to draw the reader into the plot but also to create deceit and confusion. Well worth a visit in my opinion.
