Forget everything you thought you knew about heroes.

Taliesimon, a farm girl who defied destiny to become the first woman in living memory to join the elite dragoon warriors, has tasted the bitter fruit of glory. Shackled by traditions that choke the very air she breathes, she yearns for more. But her chance for true glory comes when creatures out of myth and legend descend upon her village, their weapons dripping with blood and terror.

Faced with unimaginable horrors, Taliesimon refuses to yield. The flames of her indomitable spirit blaze brighter than any dragon’s fire, fueled by the desperation of her people. She fights not for fame, but for survival, for the very soul of her home.

But as villagers vanish into the night, snatched by the enemy, Taliesimon realizes the fight is not hers alone. She must forge an unlikely alliance, rallying a band of warriors and misfits. They stand against a tide of darkness, challenging not only monstrous foes, but also the complacency of a leadership blind to the true danger.

Fueled by an unbreakable will and a heart that burns with righteous fury, Taliesimon leads her alliance into the darkness, prepared to sacrifice everything to forge a new destiny. Not just for herself, but for all those who have been robbed of theirs. Will she rise to the challenges before her, defying fate itself to rescue the villagers and shield her home from annihilation?

Kevin Potter is an award-winning fantasy author who enjoys spending time masquerading as dragons larger than some cities. He's fond of discussing the origination of his fantasy series, which was the result of taking seriously the adage, "If you can't find what you want to read, write it."

Although somewhat of a recluse, he actually loves interacting with readers on any platform they happen to frequent, though of late he mostly avoids traditional social media in favor of the reader/writer-centric Substack.

Speaking of which, you can get free stories, samples, and be the first to know what he's working on by subscribing to his Substack!

Imaginative and exciting from the first page to the last page and I did not want to put it down! Author Kevin Potter really knows how to write amazing fantasy. I was hooked from the beginning with the world building to the character development. It's amazing. A thrilling plot with plenty of action, sorcery, treachery, and the building of strong friendships.... And the dragons! No one can write from the mind of a dragon like Mr. Potter! I was totally enthralled with the dragons and the wonderful cast of unforgettable characters. I give this book the highest recommendation possible...

An epic start to a new series! Great characters battling to save the kingdom and maybe get some redemption in the process. If you’re a fan of books with deep developed worlds you won’t regret it.

*I beta read this novel and received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review is unbiased and represents my own personal opinions.*

I have reviewed a number of Kevin Potter’s dragon-based fantasy novels over the last few years, and Shadow of the Overlord is definitely my favourite so far.

The plot interweaves between the viewpoints of young adult main characters Taliesimon and William as they work through battles, political intrigue and their own personal demons in order to attempt to survive, follow their dreams and restore peace to the kingdom. And also, dragons!

This is classic epic swords-and-sorcery fantasy, with kings, warriors, forbidden magic and a good dose of defying the world to achieve your destiny. The characters are well-developed and interesting, and the parallel plot featuring Quill and the Overlord (from a more familiar dracontine perspective).

The book is epic in scope as well as content – it’s quite a long tome – but the individual chapters are short and the story flies by at a brisk pace thanks to all of the action. I would definitely recommend this for epic fantasy fans looking for a dragon-rich new world in which to immerse themselves.

Taliesimon snapped her jaw closed and the world seemed to return to normal time. She glared straight forward, determined as never before to make the jump and overcome the course.
Her last few steps before the chasm passed in a blur, her pulse thundering in her ears.
She shortened her last three steps before the edge, to ensure her right foot landed at the very edge of the pit.
She sucked in a deep breath and held it, then her foot touched down.
She thrust up from her right foot with all her might. Her thigh, calf, and torso seemed a single muscle as all worked perfectly to send her sailing into the air.
Taliesimon glanced down as she went up and caught sight of the broken body, and a dozen more just like it, impaled by the stakes.
Oh, no, she thought. I’m not going to make it.

Talk about an epic journey to save the Kingdom. Shadow of the Overlord is the first book in The Calamity series and it was truly a magnificent tale. This is a beautifully written story with intriguing characters and I anxiously await the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

It was very hard to put this book down. There were so many gripping points in this tale. A determined heroine, a wizard wanting to control everything, a missing king and prince, all kinds of fantastical creatures and of course both good and not-so-good dragons.
Thanks for all the hard work that went into writing this good book.

Long, involved and complex fantasy (men, elves, dwarves, orks and other races - plus dragon(s) migrated from Earth that seem to have replaced a native species (torthugra). The planet is interesting because it is metal-poor; the main human cultures view sorcery with suspicion.

Several threads lasting several years - the main ones concerning Prince Dargon who leaves the palace aged thirteen, supplemented by an assassin after a rogue elf, the world-dominating ambitions of the eponymous Overlord and the rise to power of an ork. Throughout we follow the trials of two young women who wish to become dragoons - an occupation usually, though not specifically, reserved for men. All these threads combine at the climax - which sets up the next book.

The writing is usually clear and the author juggles PoV well - the chapters are quite short so one doesn't get bored. There are one or two jumps in time (which work quite well to move the plot along) and a couple of characters change names - the reasons eventually become clear but initially it's a bit odd.

There seems to be a lot of back-story, some prequels, and multiple volumes that move the story along that I'll probably get round to reading eventually (once I work out which story comes where in the timeline... )
