DEAD RINGER (Detective Jack Creed Murder Mystery Books Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.5 out of 5 stars 118 ratings

"Ten Broken Fingers And Toes. A Dead Accountant Counts No More "

DEAD RINGER is short read #2 of 8 in the top selling Detective Jack Creed Murder Mystery Books Series

A dead former UK accountant with ten expensive-looking rings on his hands shows up in an industrial waste bin behind the popular Cabarita Beach Resort.

What makes this criminal investigation even more intriguing is the torture on the dead man’s fingers and toes—all broken prior to his death. Does this British accountant have a seedy past?

Detective Jack Creed is immediately on the case seeking criminal justice, but sifting through the myriad of suspects including a battered wife, a recalcitrant son, an ex-lover and a missing secretary—all with secrets to hide—only makes this mystery action fiction more mysterious.

In the style of British detective mysteries, DEAD RINGER, is the second murder mystery short story in the Detective Jack Creed murder mystery books series.

“Find the ring, find the killer” becomes Jack’s mantra—everyone has too many secrets to tell, but no one’s talking.

Jack Creed is a traditional detective with a twist. He’s part of a police procedural team, but that’s where the similarities end. Readers of Australian mystery books author C T Mitchell say Creed is a “Rebus in a Valentino suit”. But don’t let his Italian loafers, linen jackets or his ‘67 Mustang fool you. Creed is hard, anti-establishment, a fiercely loyal family man and the copper you need in a crime investigation with no unsolved mysteries to his name.

C.T. Mitchell, part of the new breed of Australian crime fiction authors, dishes up mayhem in this police procedural on a scale that can be devoured in a single sitting. Download book #2 of this now and strap yourself in for another action & adventure thrilling ride from the tranquil seaside town of Cabarita Beach, north of Sydney Australia.

Ten broken fingers is one thing. But, ten broken toes is something else all together! Not only why, but, how could you break them? I’m thinking maybe a sledge hammer? Who would hate a person that much? Why all the rings? Who and where is this secretary everyone is talking about? There are many questions in this story. It was interesting trying to figure out who and why. However, if you are looking for a cozy mystery, this is not one. Still, I recommend it as an interesting story.

Det. Creed and his partner, Jo, set out to solve the death of a man found in a dumpster. I liked the first short story about these two detectives enough to read this one. Again I have given a rating of three stars. The story reads quickly and I like the lead characters but the solution to the crime is obvious and the dialogue feels a bit formulated. So a good story but not a great one.

It's true....Jack Creed is a force to be reckoned with. He is a great detective, keeps his personal life to himself and doggedly determined to solve his cases. His co workers, chief and people he deals with regularly are believable and interesting.

This homicide deals with a lot of tormented women, jealously and treachery. Good read, highly recommended.

I love reading CT Mitchell, but it makes me tense that his tenses are mixed between past and present. Please pick a tense and the reading will be even more enjoyable.

Well-constructed characters and some sharp dialogue drew me into this mystery novella including passages like "James has secrets. Secrets he doesn't want anyone to know...Secrets I don't want anyone to know. It's best to stay quiet. Quiet keeps you alive." All that's needed for it to be a 5 star read is a little polish editing-wise as sometimes words are absent in passages like "Remember that and [we] will get along fine" location 83, "If you ask me, you need to find whoever owned that last [one] on the right." location 251and "I'm not in[to] the double dipping. Sorry." location 353 as examples. Otherwise a very good read and have "'Rejection' already locked and loaded for next time.

If you like a mystery with a lot of suspects to choose from this book is for you. I enjoyed trying to figure out which one it was. Mr. Mitchell writes mysteries that grab your attention and holds it to the very end.

A man's body is found in a dumpster with a ring on each finger and all his fingers and toes broken. As Detective Sgt Jack and Detective Constable Jo investigate, they find out that he was not a nice man and many people wanted him dead. He was a womanizer and a bully.
I enjoy the Jack Creed stories. He is a hard working detective who doesn't always follow all the rules, but always gets the killer in the end. His character reminds me of the gritty police procedurals and the hard boiled PIs of the 30s and 40s. I grew up on those stories and still love them. Kudos to Mr Mitchell for bringing back some happy memories for me.
