A well written haunting story about abuse and being brave enough to walk out.
Katie desperately wants to be whole, to feel that she exists. But she is with someone who humiliates her, beats her and treats her like a possession.

    She thinks about killing herself.
"Should I blow out on to the road like the rubbish I am?
Would it sweep me away and into the shadows."

She dreams of having a normal day "talking about the weather and holidays and all those wonderfully mundane things."
    But then Daryl snaps.

She doesn't recognize the beaten woman she sees in the mirror..
"I find myself on a desert island,
    isolated from his affection."

There are no bars on her windows, yet she feels trapped all the same.
    She cries silent tears.

"A good day for me is one where I go
unnoticed, where Daryl doesn't see me."

Then, when she thinks Daryl will kill her, she wonders:
    "will anyone mourn for me
will anyone know I was gone?"

"Suddenly I want to get out of this alive.
I was wrong to think I don't care about dying."

    Katie is again beautiful.
    Katie is not gone.

Author Sarah Northwood has allowed her imagination the courage to take residency within the deepest, darkest pit of spousal abuse and has come back with a tale that shines light onto the taboo subject in a way like no other. At times painfully raw, at times conservatively hopeful, "She's Not Gone" draws the reader into the life of one such victim that proposes, in fact-documented unavoidable truthfulness, that none of us can be exempt from mental abuse when we're blinded by that which we all desperately crave--love. I'm happy to award "She's Not Gone" with four stars--four rich, shining, big stars.

Katie Hawcroft is making her way in the world as best as she can. Already strained by an estranged relationship with her mother, Katie has settled into the comfort and needed attention of a relationship with a man she truly loves and would literally die for. Daryl is that perfect man, charming and giving on the outside, easy on the eyes, and the the turned-away ex of a relationship who Katie feels nothing but compassion and love for, and will do anything to hold on to.

What she comes to realize is that those efforts, over time, will cost her more than her unswerving devotion. They may cost her a life--her own. While the world at large sees Daryl for the charming, benevolent person be wishes himself to be seen as, behind closed doors, Katie sees him as a true, domineering, manipulating, insulting, paranoid monster that bends Katie to his Black Hole of a soul, event after abusive event. The toll mounts to the point where Katie herself begins to believe in these "transgressions", as disrespect that's deserving of the worst kind of punishment that Daryl gleefully deals out--mental, financial, physical. His intent is to control her in every way possible, and the realism in which Ms. Northwood spells this out for the reader is nothing short of disturbing.

With the help throughout the crisis of her dear friend and mentor Jeannie, more of a mother to her than her actual physical one, Katie finds a way to overcome the challenges that befall her. It opens a new life and a new freedom for her that she never knew before--until one night, a horror comes to her that threatens that newfound happiness. She must rely on all the lessons learned from a horrible time with a horrible man to keep her alive, and to call upon a strength during a final confrontation that has never seen use before--and is needed in its most powerful form in order for her to succeed.

While reading "She's Not Gone", I did find a few mechanical errors in editing. And while I did not agree with a couple of instances where I felt a resolution to any given crisis could have been lingered on a bit longer or delved into deeper, I did not allow those personal takes to prevent 4 stars from becoming 5. It was only that on the basis of the editing imperfections I found does this story get the 4 stars awarded. Otherwise, being a much bigger believer in looking for great story rather than technical inadequacies, I found that even those in no way took away from the fact that this is engaging from Page One, and that we must root for Katie, even though she toxins herself with self-inflicted confidence killers. The narrative flows fairly evenly, picks up quickly from slow downs, and keeps us interested in finding out the outcome of Katie' s story right until the end. There's even an element of other-world mystery thrown into the mix at just the right time, which I found greatly satisfying.

Sarah Northwood is indeed an author to keep up with, and keeping up with her journey is exactly what I intend to do.

I liked this book. Its protagonist is a victim of psychological and physical abuse. The story comes across as that of a strong woman who owns her weakness, the man who beats her:
"I don't know how Daryl will be when he comes home, but I tell myself things could be worse."
The description of Daryl, the acknowledgement that she is wrong in her thinking: He was "... staring at me with what could only be described as lust. I was flattered. I still am... So, even now a part of me wishes I hadn't left him. That I should have been able to fix him."
The author nails the psychology and strangely paints a depth into the protagonist. Her insight and internal conflict are her strength. It made me think, "She's won ninety percent of the battle" and want to pull for the rest.

The tagline says something about a hint of the supernatural. I was surprised but not turned off by this twist. It was so far beyond predictable to be pleasing. Great job with this redemption story.

It's a powerful story that submerges you into a mentally and physically disturbing relationship/lifestyle. When I read books about abuse, I want to jump into the storyline and defend the women in need. Sarah described events very well to induce a response like that from me. This book also had me curious the entire time because I wasn't sure where it was going. I loved that it turned a little paranormal but I wish there was a little bit more of Eva/car in the story. Overall a great read and will read other books from this author.

“She’s Not Gone” was definitely an emotional roller-coaster for me. Katie was a wonderful central heroine whose only fault was falling in love with the wrong man, which almost cost her life in the end. It was very easy to connect with her from the very first chapters and soon, as her controlling boyfriend’s abusive behavior escalated to a whole new level, I found myself shouting at my kindle: “Get your things and run, girl!” But unfortunately, like it happens in so many real-life stories, the victim of such abuse often finds themselves too terrified to leave, and this is exactly what happened to Katie. I won’t reveal any more of the plot so you can read it for yourselves, but let me tell you, the story is incredibly real, raw, and heart-wrenching. It will definitely make you feel things, and that, in my eyes, is a sign of a truly good story-telling. Five stars!

"What is it? What do you want? No don’t, please. I’m sorry. We’ll make this right. Tell me what to do and I’ll do better."
Daryl is Earl in that Dixie Chicks song... Thus the ending wasn't totally satisfying, but opinion aside this is a quality tale for those willing to brave relateable abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling Read

I felt so sorry for the main protagonist. Subjected to an abusive hell for years, at the hands of a Jekyll & Hyde type character. Katie just accepts his behaviour, apologising and promising to do better. I just wanted to jump into the book and drag her away from this existence, such was the depth of the story. It really pulled me in.

A really great read. Not always enjoyable, but always captivating. I also loved the supernatural element at the end. A nice twist to an already great book. Fabulous stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written story that will chill your soul

This is the story of Katie, who thinks she has met the love of her life, Daryl, only to find out that underneath his charming exterior lies the heart of a monster.
Written in first person, present tense, the author manages to convey Katie's anguish, self-doubts and low esteem to the reader in a way that makes it easy to understand why she can't leave Daryl, despite the warning signs. There are hints of a difficult childhood that, while not dealt with in detail, leave no doubt in your mind that Katie has led a very troubled existence.
Even though he is manipulative and violent, and even though she is terrified of him, Katie continues to blame herself for his behaviour, justifying his actions and delaying the moment she knows she will have to leave him.
Once again, Sarah Northwood has written a book that deals with sensitive issues in a way that draws the reader into the story, pulling you along on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, right to the end when you can at last mull over what you have just read. This well-written novella will open people's eyes to the effects of psychological and physical abuse, and help to explain the too-often repeated question: "But why doesn't she just leave?"
Well done, I can't wait for the author's next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars But I know that these relationships exist and I know woman are subjected to this more than we like to think or realize
Reviewed in Canada on September 19, 2017
I received an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The story recounts Katie's journey through domestic violence which can be a very difficult subject to write about. But this story isn't about the beatings Katie suffered, it's more about how she felt and her actions throughout the ordeal.

It was hard for me to read because I'm a strong person who would never stick around a relationship such as this one. I suppose I'm on the other end of the spectrum and would kill the... you know what. But I know that these relationships exist and I know woman are subjected to this more than we like to think or realize. So my offering is this... if you are in an abusive relationship, run as fast as you can. There are plenty of people in this day and age who will help you. There is help! That wasn't always the case, and many women have died because they couldn't get help. You can, so run and run now. Don't wait, just do it!

The second half of the story added an interesting twist which was really enjoyable. So kudos to the author for ending on a high note which these stories so often do not.

4.0 out of 5 stars The unpalatable truth of an abusive relationship.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2022
This is a sadly familiar tale of domestic abuse and the author has done an excellent job of getting inside the main character’s head. Katie lives in thrall and terror of her unpredictable boyfriend who has isolated her and manipulated her to a point where she blames herself for his behaviour. I really felt for Katie, and her point of view is very believable.
She’s Not Gone is slightly under 200 pages in length which makes it easier to slip into gaps in a busy routine.
