Wonderful...Shine On is a fascinating account of an extraordinary experience and I recommend everyone read this book to understand the true importance and power of NDEs. --Dr Penny Sartori, author of The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences
Amazing, amazing, beautiful book. I absolutely loved it. David's miraculous and moving story reads like a novel that brings you to tears. He used his spiritual experience to truly look within and change the trajectory of his life...beautifully weaves together the importance of the intersection of psychology and spirituality. --Dr Amy Robbins, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Host of Life, Death and The Space Between Podcast

About the authors
I was born in the UK, Blackpool but raised in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. I left my inner city comprehensive school with only one qualification having failed almost everything due to undiagnosed severe dyslexia. The only option open was a course learning how to draw letters for adverts, not a great career choice for someone profoundly dyslexic. After being sacked from my one and only proper job, I moved to London and played three-chord guitar in various rock 'n' roll punk and pop bands and co-wrote a couple of pop songs with Kevin Rowland. Eventually, I drifted away from playing in bands and things went on a downward spiral in my life. I ended up surviving as a manual labourer, my life empty and directionless. It was at this low point that I had a freak accident and was pulled under the wheels of a speeding train. In the hospital afterwards, I had my amazing near-death experience (NDE). The NDE changed everything for me and inspired me to reach a level of musical and artistic creativity that I had never been capable of achieving before. At first, I felt compelled to produce paintings of what I’d seen in the Afterlife and then I felt moved to compose classical music, even though I've never received any training in classical music and never composed such music before my NDE (in fact, to this day, I still cannot read or write a single note of music at all). My debut symphony, The Divine Light, was inspired by my NDE and I was lucky enough to have it premiered at a sell-out performance. Since then, I have composed a follow-up symphony, ’The Falcon’, which was also premiered at a sell-out concert, as was my Cambridge Clarinet Choir commissioned piece ‘Awake’, conducted by renowned Clarinet player Andrew Webster. I am currently composing a new symphony entitled ‘I Wasn’t Expecting This’. I came back from the Afterlife charged with an incredible energy, a burning desire to tell everyone there is nothing to fear after death, life continues on. Before my NDE, my life had been completely ruled by guilt and lack of self-worth. But my NDE gave me the self-love and confidence to go and try whatever I wanted to do in life and that’s a wonderful feeling and I want everyone to feel that way.
J S Jones is a British academic. In her post-doctoral academic career, she has authored a number of scientific journal articles and book chapters. Outside the world of academia, she is now working on a new fiction novel, the first in a planned series and thoroughly enjoying the process.
J S Jones talks about SHINE ON. "The events in 'Shine On' really happened and I was a part of them. Having witnessed this story first-hand, I believe it is a remarkable tale that deserves to be told. David has profound dyslexia, so I was delighted when he asked me to co-author the book because he felt I was the one person who could understand his thought processes and capture his language, mood and emotions to help tell his story as authentically as possible."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024My thoughts on this beautiful account, because this is not a story; David’s experiences happened to him.
I see two cores to this account:
1: How beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, powerful, omnipotent the universal source, The God Entity, is. God is not an angry old man sitting in the clouds waiting for us to make mistakes so He might smite us - far far from it. God plays symphonies in all of our hearts, which leads me to the second core of this account.
2: What struck me about this account, where I saw beauty, was how the effect of David’s visit to the other place affected many people lives, his family, Joy his spiritual healer, the cellist herbal healer, an entire orchestra, Mr. Fellows - the man who literally puts people back together again and Irene who helps people to emotionally heal/evolve…And the list goes on to everyone who’s moved by David’s paintings and music (which I am one).
The beauty of David’s experience are apparent when you look at his evolution since the accident, and the second beauty is the way the village all helped in important and crucial ways - I wonder - we saw the start of God’s tapestry with David’s healing, and the golden thread of God’s love flowed from David’s experience and brought joy to an entire community, and given his orchestral success, potentially the world.
Just goes to show what a gift getting pulled under a train can be when God is with you - and God is certainly close to David and the many good people surrounding him.
I love you God. Thank you. Thanks to David, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2023There are some stories that just touch your soul and this is one of them. I've heard him tell his story numerous times on podcasts, JEFFMARA podcast, Heaven Awaits and NDE DIARY but to read his well thought out words have his story even more details. Through his book and beautifully created artwork you can experience a small piece of what it feels like to leave this physical body behind and see things for what they truthfully are. I'm blessed to have come across this amazing glimpse into our real home. I recommend to everyone looking for answers to the big questions.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2025I loved reading about David’s experiences. The detail in which he writes about his terrible incident of being pulled under the train had me on the edge of my seat. His detailed description of his NDE had me right there with him. He opens himself up to expose his fears, his growth and his journey in a way that we can all benefit from reading. I so wish I had been there on opening night when his symphony was played for the first time.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2020This story is deeply moving. When I got halfway through the book, I set it down for the first time since opening the cover; only because I wanted to slow down the experience.
David tells his story in such a way that it feels like I'm there with him in the days and months leading up to his Near Death Experience.
When he recounts the details of the accident, he speaks of a feeling of "splitting in two", almost like two opposite experiences happening at the same time. He does an amazing job of making that sensation real for the reader. His words pull you right in there with him in those terrifying, confusing, and somehow beautiful moments.
While I've had an interest in the mysteries surrounding our existence, I haven't been drawn to stories specifically about NDEs until I heard about Shine On; and reading it has changed me in some subtle and yet profound way.
Shine On is David's story. But he tells it so well that it feels like my own story. Like all of our stories. Which now that I've read it, I suspect that it is.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021NDE is becoming a known abbreviation but it is still not understood. If you have even one of these experiences you know more. Author of this book knows more, now. Humans should not think they know the universe outside, and they know even less about the universe inside. This book is a description of the universe that is inside of us and how it connects to all. Inspiring, insightful and true. Check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling and transforming
Ditchfield’s journey from a life that was caving in on itself to a life with meaning was compelling and inspiring. I love how he became a painter and a composer but with such humility, allowing spirit to speak through him and co-create. I think this aspect of the book is what makes it stand out from other NDE tales. What changes in a person is not so simple as their motivation, or worldview, or beliefs. David’s story shows how the ultimate gift of the near death experience is how it opens a person to allow spirit to live through them. In his case, of course this has resulted in amazing artwork and classical symphonies, but I think we can all benefit from the takeaway that life is richer and more meaningful when we open to the possibility of being more than we are and allowing our soul to live through us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and compelling story
This is such an interesting book. I had no prior knowledge of NDEs and the writer's personal journey and account of his terrible accident at such a low point of his life was a painful read, but as I read on I realised it was an essential part of his story. It felt human, painful and very honest - but with some dry humour and a lightness of touch in between. The different timelines and back story that built up to his harrowing accident were effective literary tools. The resulting and vivid recapture of his NDE in the emergency room is beautifully captured and this sensitively written book makes one reflect on new possibilities of life after death. Should we chose to listen, the story gives us a clear message that we should not be fearful. Life is arguably the harder option, especially how we chose to live it in the 'here and now' as is the aspiration to leave a meaningful mark behind. Defining what a meaningful life is for someone in deep pain as a result of addiction is also dissected in the book and done through excerpts of his intimate psychotherapy sessions. As David continues his personal journey - (post profound physical injuries PTSD and lingering personal demons), these sessions are both visceral and insightful. They help us empathise in a non judgemental way as he reaches a place of peace and recovery - heightened by his extraordinary call to spiritual creativity through his art and music .This true sense of self and artistic epiphany is realised when David and many of those around him recognise his special and arguably higher abilities. We are all relieved when he gets to a good place and are uplifted as a result.
Whatever our belief systems, we can all afford to take time out to read this truly spiritual gift of a story and reflect upon our own lives. Or, perhaps just listen to those quiet subliminal/ higher voices that draw us to our inner selves and help make life and love sing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiully Sensitive and Candid. A Book I will Read Again and Again...
Having personal knowledge of NDEs and after following many others' experiences, I was expecting a story that would enhance my strong faith and beliefs about our reasons for being here on this life journey and what exists beyond. I received so much more than that. David's story is beautifully sensitive and candid. Shine On is much more than a suspenseful tale of a terrible accident and amazing subsequent NDE. Within, I found passages so meaningful and moving that I had to pause and reflect deeply, sometimes to shed a tear. I feel such gratitude for David's willingness to share his lows and foibles with stunning pure honesty, to let us see deep into his life. It is because of this honesty that his story crescendos, building upon character with magic and inspiration. It's all about love. I am left with deep respect and liking for this man, David Ditchfield. This is a book that I will read again and again. (Joelle)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, exciting, teaching and unputdownable Book
After seeing the interview with David on Anthony Chene Productions on YouTube, I decided I had to buy the book. I'm so glad I did. This book is very well put together, gripping and a wonderful true story. The best NDE book I have read. It certainly made me think and made me want to try to be a better person even more, but also added to my faith in God and life after death. I read it in just 2 days, as I couldn't put it down. I used to work at Addenbrookes where David went to be saved after his horrific accident and I live near St Ives and so after reading the book I attended the lovely St Ives Spiritualist Church where David got his first message before his accident and I actually got a very uplifting message from my Grandad through the medium there on that night, so I'm very glad I went. Thank you David for telling your compelling, exciting and truthful story. It changed my outlook on life. For those who doubt his accident, Google it and you'll see the accident did take place on Huntingdon Station at that time. Maybe David, I'll see you in my local St Ives to thank you personally. Very well done. 10/10.
