    Great short stories. Enjoyable. Creative.

I most liked that there was a wide array of futures depicted, ranging from the very pessimistic to the very optimistic.

If you want to know why I gave this collection of stores a 1-star rating, read story #5 - SUQI - in the "Look Inside." I'm not interested in reading porn..........not at Amazon; not anywhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science-Fiction (and it's happening now)

There is an advertisement on television at the moment featuring a middle-aged hipster type – let’s call him Hipster Dad – asking questions directly of his own television. Hipster Dad wants to know who is in the programme he is watching; and Telly speaks unto him and tells him. Hipster Dad then wants the living rooms light dimmed, so Telly dims the lights. Then – I tell you, the drama really ramps in this advert – Charming Child scampers into the room and asks for something to eat, so Hipster Dad asks Telly for details of nearby Greek restaurants. And Telly tells him! No wonder Hipster Dad seems in its thrall.

Telly is facilitated with Artificial Intelligence, and it’s On Sale Now! I know there are other such AI-enabled devices available in a range of forms and abilities and usages, and that’s the point – we’re living the AI dream. Today.
So the field of AI is a rich and fertile seam for story telling, because it seems boundless yet immediate and relevant and in our homes, and that is where the beauty, invention and breadth of ‘The Singularity 50’ lies. Fifty varied stories across a wide time span (some feel close, others distant) covering imaginative uses and consequences of AI as it filters into and blends with our lives. There is a fair bit of dystopian vision, but also some counterpoint with stories of a more positive outcome. My favourites are those stories that directly contrast the motives and desires of people with those of AI.

This is a very thought-provoking volume from the Create 50 stable’. It entertains and challenges, and some of the stories and their implications will stay with you after you’ve closed the book.

Finally, returning to the advertisement, and in the spirit of ‘The Singularity 50’: it doesn’t happen on screen but I bet a pound to a pinch that if Telly – or its more advanced successor – demands the blood sacrifice of Charming Child (in the manner of God testing Abraham with Isaac) I bet Hipster Dad wouldn’t hesitate.

Well, he might, but only to ask Telly where the knives are kept.

A collection of sci-fi stories which look at the rise of technology, in particular, artificial intelligence, over the next 50 years. 50 short stories. What a great idea! I enjoyed this. There was something for everyone. Some of the stories were happy, some sad, some scary and some just really wrong but in a good way!
