Slate Kindle Edition
Slate is a violent tale, a tender tale, about all the contradictions and absurdities of modern America. It's also a love story and a tale of revenge that's easy to enter and hard to define.
Slate is a warrior on the lam. A former Army scout, he lived deep in Taliban country in Afghanistan until his mind snapped. Sent home, he got into a bar fight, killed two local troublemakers, and has been running ever since. Slate is on a mission. His former captain, Lyle Tillerman, slaughtered an entire village in Afghanistan, was relieved of his command, and discharged. Slate has been searching for him for two years. He intends to confront his former captain and kill him.
As the story begins, Slate is sitting in front of a bonfire with a bunch of lone wolves on the outskirts of Martinsville, a tiny Midwestern metropolis. A young woman visits Slate's camp, bringing food to the lone wolves, and reciting poetry to them. She's the daughter of Martinsville's crime lord. Her name is Caroline. Slate's intrigued by Caroline, and falls in love with her as the flickering light of the bonfire falls on her face. But Caroline disappears one day.
Slate discovers that Tillerman has come to Martinsville with a band of renegade ex-scouts, has killed Caroline's father, and taken over the town. He's also holding Caroline as a hostage. Slate has a new mission now. He has to free Caroline and find a way to destroy Tillerman and the grip he has on Martinsville. It's almost an impossible task. Slate is all alone.

About the author

"Charyn, like Nabokov, is that most fiendish sort of writer―so seductive as to beg imitation, so singular as to make imitation impossible." ―Tom Bissell

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2022One of the many things I love about Jerome Charyn's work is that his characters stay with you long after you've finished the book. Slate -- in the line of antihero's Charyn has created for decades, including the glock-toting NYC Commish Isaac Sidel -- is a wounded hero with a sensitive soul who yearns for purpose. In Charyn's masterful style (his "music"), Slate skewers ideas and institutions that people hold dear and asks deep questions about the plight of the modern world.
And, don't think this isn't also just a fun read! Charyn is always entertaining, gripping, and suspenseful. I could see Slate as an HBO series or major motion picture (are you listening Hollywood?). This is noir drama at its finest, written by a true master. Joe Staton's fine illustrations brings Charyn's characters to life.
Every Charyn work is greatly anticipated and Slate is another phenomenal work of art!
