About the author

With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or Letterkenny, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She's also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn't do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

"I set fire to the rain"- Adele
"There may be a great fire in our hearts, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke." Vincent Van Gogh
I prefer my continuing lessons on and ponderings about life wrapped in the lines of a story like a present wrapped in beautiful ribbons. Certainly, I am not alone in this regard. Storytelling is eons old and the foundation of communicating morality and spirituality beginning in one's early childhood.
While this story culminating in this last book is the flavor of romance I love best, it did that special "thing" to my mind and spirit. It sparked contemplation and meditation; giving me a little bit more insight into myself, others and the world in which I find myself. Yeah...it's going to be one of "those" kind of reviews.
Through the themes of the overwhelming need for revenge, the possibilities of atonement, and the freedom found in letting go of grievance with the symbolism of fire and smoke, this gifted and polished author teaches us profound, even timely lessons.
Before I offer my thoughts on these, I will tell you the book hits all the high notes of composition and form and meets the expectations of the romance story lover. The "mains" continue to develop and captivate and the plot line moves along smoothly with some surprises that enhance. The plot was also tightly woven so that there was no jumping over plot holes.
The fundamental disagreement between Edward and Celia is Edward's all-consuming desire to avenge every wrong done to Celia. In an introspective moment he describes himself:
“I’ve been completely consumed with rage and spite, these twin fires that ate everything in their pathway. No matter what I fed them, they continued to burn, burn, burn. Everything was fuel, and there I was, throwing flames at whatever I deemed deserving to be burned down."
Celia has been broken down and been made new because of Edward and their transforming love. She has crawled through the fire and emerged like the mythical Phoenix. She is looking to the future, yet, Edward is hyper-focused on revenge to the detriment of the "redeeming" love he found with Celia. He is also haunted by his past deeds. Celia is desperate to cling to her secrets to keep Edward safe from his own destruction. With a new life on the way, Edward has to choose between primary focus on his quest for destructive vengeance or laying down his sword of vengeance and becoming the father and husband Celia desires. What will be the consequences of his choice?
Within the framework of this story are reminders of the hollow, destructive force that is revenge. Leaving ashes and smoke rising in its wake...Nothing left to hold onto. The smoke rising, itself, a metaphor for the fleeting nature of time and life.
Haven't we all recently experienced the damage, destruction, chaos and the sheer nihilism based on a personal philosophy of revenge? Don't we all waste some of our precious time looking back, if not with vengeance in our heart, but holding a grudge there. Holding onto something which in the end is really nothing?...only wasted time, energy and emotional bandwidth?
How can we expect to move forward when we are caught up in the past, mired in negativity, focused on the fire of vengeance? Nothing but smoke in our future?
The idea of atonement is also introduced into the narrative as Edward begins to engage and confront his ultimate rival. The beauty and grace of atonement is underscored as a theme. Think about how liberating, karma-balancing, purifying the idea of true atonement is not only for the soul of one but also, the good of all. We may not be able to erase our past but we can lift the burden of guilt we carry from the harm we have perpetuated by atoning for this harm. Redemption is made more manifest by atonement. Forgiveness for ourselves and others becomes more possible. True acknowledgement of our flawed nature will allow us to move forward as a person toward peace of mind...peace just being human. Atonement is substantial proof of this acknowledgement.
As you can tell, I had a hard conversation with myself. The ideas seem forthright and deceptively simple, yet so hard to truly manifest in our daily life. We are complicated emotional beings. We are spiritual beings. We are social creatures. We all have needs, wants and desires. All of this adds layer upon layer to our motivations behind anything we do, good or bad. Whether we move forward or stay fixed in time.
Using this pallet of complex motivations, our author wrote a moving and brilliant romantic saga. A saga which intertwines with a few others she wrote. While her writing hit me in that place between my head and heart, it was also a wonderful escape into a lover's world filled with passion, big emotion, heart-stopping desire, and body-tingling sensation. Everything. And I mean everything, a reader of the art desires.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDark characters finding redemption are my favorite characters to read about. Edward through this series is hard, reluctant to bend, but Celia pushes him the entire way. They learn from each other's darkness and pull each other into the light. I was emotionally drawn in and desperately pulling for a happy ending. I loved that Hudson and Edward were within the same storyline. If you loved the Fixed Series, the Slay series is the best follow up. I definitely recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs with the rest of this series, the writing is very good and the characters consistent in their behavior. I was pleased to see MMC, Edward, become less of an inconsiderate arse by the time it was all over. However, there was at least one critical plot point that was not fleshed out. Most were minor, but the disappearance of Alanya was a crucial scene that should have been developed as it was the pivotal point of the resolution of past hurt and harm between two of the story's powerful families. Perhaps I am a bit greedy, but I would rather see another book added to the series to allow the expansion of these points than lose them to brevity. The books were that good.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA great ending to a four part series. Celia and Edward reached mutual decisions. A definite need to consummate their vows and to unite their families.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am one of those few people out there that actually didn’t read any of the Fixed books before this series began. Rivalry was my first LP ever. I could see references to Hudson and Alayna but I wasn’t sure who they were, plus I loved that I didn’t NEED to read their story in order to understand this one. So, I began my many-weeks journey into reading books in the Fixed Universe and even got into the Dirty Universe (I just need a couple of more books then I’ll be caught up with all of them).
Celia and Edward- sigh- what can I say. From the first book, I was hooked! I hated Edward and felt so bad for Celia (keep in mind, I didn’t know how bad of a person she was because I hadn’t read any of the Fixed books). I was rooting for her to find a way to beat Edward- who at this point was an unlikable character. I couldn’t believe he would abandon her and there was nothing she could do.
Then book 2 came (which is also when I realized that I didn’t need sleep lol I was too invested now) and Edward became redeemable. This is when I fell in love with him even more. I love my Alpha A*******, but I love it when they are such an onion of a character that we are almost forced to love them, which is what happened with Edward for me.
When I one-clicked into book 3, I wanted to just devour the book. Does one really need to eat, sleep or work lol? I needed to see where it was going, what was going to happen, how would this drive Celia’s and Edward’s relationship, etc etc. I felt like some justice happened- but there was more that was left unsettled and it made me even more grateful that there was a book 4.
Then boom 4 came and man, oh man, was I in for a ride. It starts off with where book 3 left off- Celia telling Edward she’s pregnant. By the time book 4 landed in my kindle, I had already caught up with all the other Fixed universe books, so I knew that she had her baby and I knew that Edward was still in the picture. But the journey to acceptance, compromise, healing, justice, and tranquility was one I am so grateful I was able to experience. It wasn’t all butterflies and rainbows- there were some deep, visceral turmoils that were dark and uncomfortable that needed to happen throughout the series in order for it to truly feel complete. I loved it!! Loved all the books, including the other books that are part of this universe.
Thank you Laurelin Paige- thank you for giving me my reading mojo back and for making reading exciting for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWow I absolutely loved this series and very sad that it's finished.
Edward was a hot headed Alpha that had to have his own way.
Celia was hard headed aswell but Edward new how to make her vulnerable and open up to him.
There love story started off as a arrangement and then they fell in love with each other along the way.
Celia lied to have a baby and she thought that would of been the end of there relationship but it actually made them stronger.
