Soar (The Empire Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition
In the city that never sleeps the Chronicles continue…
Serving coffee is temporary, just like Casey's year off from school. She’s going to come up with a plan to stay in New York City and go back to college, and that plan does not involve dating a paranormal creature—let alone two.
Running the supernatural society of New York is not as fun as it sounds, especially when you still have to answer to your ex-girlfriend’s fiancé. Toby doesn’t mean to bring Casey into the chaos of his life, but he can't resist the girl who makes him smile when he thought no one else ever could.
Jared's in New York checking out a security risk for his best friend, the king. He plans to return to New Orleans quickly, but not if it means losing his chance with the brunette who pretends she wants nothing to do with him.
In over her head with a bunch of winged creatures who most definitely are not angels, Casey has to figure out who to trust with her life and maybe her heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2014I was surprised with how much I fell in love with Alyssa Rose Ivy's Crescent Chronicles, so I was more than excited for Soar once I learned she would continue the story of this world through a different point of view. And from Toby, no less. Although, it's not told just through Toby's point of view, we also get Casey and Jared!! 3 in 1 and it was freaking amazing!
I wasn't much of a Toby fan in The Crescent Chronicles, although he did redeem himself in the end, naturally. Throughout Soar, I felt like we got to see a whole new side to Toby. True, he still did some pretty bad things in regards to Allie, but part of that had to do with who Allie was. Toby is quite the character and I found myself rooting for him more than Jared. And I freaking loved Jared in the first trilogy. Although, I had hoped he was going to fall for Allie's friend.
In Soar, the story kind of starts off at a slower pace, but still exciting in some ways. Casey is about to be introduced to the Petron world when she agrees to go out with Toby in order to escape a date that she didn't want from her boss at the coffee shop. Eric is kind of a jerk in ways and doesn't like accepting no for an answer, although he does seem to be into Casey.
Soon feelings and emotions develop between Casey and Toby. They have a sweet kind of romance, but once the Petron stuff comes into their relationship when Casey's life is threatened, she begins to see things differently. One part comes along with her realizing that Toby's ex that he mentioned in passing, is in fact the queen, Allie. But that doesn't stop Casey from befriending Allie, although it kind of puts a damper on things between her and Toby.
Then there's Jared. He wants Casey too and it starts to seem like a whole replay of Allie's life, but yet it's not. Jared was our resident playboy and the fact that he wants Casey and sees him having something more with her becomes endearing to me. For 3/4 of the novel, I was all for Casey choosing Toby but then that last 1/4 really got to me. I could see Jared being her "one". Of course now I am left befuddled with who she stands with on the cover, I had assumed Toby in the beginning, now I have no clue!
The ending was quite astonishing too! There was some buildup to why Casey was so special. There are a string of werewolf and bear attacks in the city, NYC, so yeah that's weird, which led to the Petrons investigating it. But soon the enemies start looking at Casey in a way that makes Toby and Jared both very unhappy.
Soar was a phenomenal read! Old characters return and new ones too! I was happy to see Allie and Levi and Owen again, Hailey too! The ending was freaking fantastic and it's going to create a whole new set of issues for Casey and her life. Plus the enemy is still at large, or perhaps it was a new enemy. I wasn't too clear on that, but that was mostly because my jaw was still dropping from a prior shocking moment!! I sooo cannot wait to read Search, book 2 in The Empire Chronicles and I can only hope Alyssa doesn't leave us hanging for long!
Overall Rating 5/5 stars
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2013This is the first Pteron series book I have read. I didn't read the preceding series, and given I really didn't like Allie in the book, I doubt I will. I also had not pre conceived dislike of Toby and many of the other reviewers did, so that may shape my view of the book
I liked the premises of the book a lot. The pace was good and kept me intrigued. The first half I loved, and was really curious how they were going to integrate the 'love triangle'.
I thought book treated the emotions and relationships fairly to a point, not over dramatization – for the most part.
This is where I think the book fell down and would really only rate it 3.5. The world building was little weak, but I don't love needless detail, but some more depth would of have been a plus. Willing to discount because there was a preceding series I could read that may build it better. They have a build up with Toby, a really good one, believable – sweet even, but still interesting and with sexual tension, etc. and then BAM Jared is instantaneous (For both of them)She knows the history, details that Allie is gorgeous, etc. no problems at all with Allie when they meet, but one person suggesting that Toby is not over her and she is done, earlier in the book it was stated that Toby had made it clear that she was his mate, but that didn’t matter. Why wouldn't she at least tell him why? All signs lead to not that interested in Toby, which will likely be reversed somehow in the next book, but I will be curious how without leading to Casey appearing really shallow. Or maybe not, I am still really confused about Eric and what that all about.
The ending was surprising but did leave a whole bunch of questions, specifically regarding the dominant genetics discussed earlier in the book. I also am not sure why the ending situation would have been more stressful the at least two of the prior situation she found herself in, with no mention of any interesting physiological issues.
The book is a good solid light read. I really was enjoying probably for ¾ of the book. The ending just kind of felt like she had goal of finishing under so many pages and she had to move the love triangle along but not make Casey slutty (which I get is a challenge) and then throw in a twist at the end, that you knew was coming and I think could have been woven in better though out the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this series
Ok so this pretty much starts off from the end of Found, but we get to see more of Toby. He's fallen into the role of leader in New York and gets on with it but everyday his only piece of solace is getting coffee and seeing Casey. She makes him feel something again which has been difficult after Allie chose Levi, but apparently she also needs protecting. Casey's life changes when she's attacked by a wolf behind the coffee house but was it an attack? Things get worse when Jared arrives to check out what's been happening and meets Casey, even though he realises Toby has feelings for her he's not bothered. Will she choose the right path? Or will a surprise twist change everything?
Wow great plot, story and characters, again amazing angst and twists that keep you glued. I once again was so into this story that I didn't realise if was finished until I'd read the final word. This has some very sweet moments, some sexual moments, which aren't crude but I have to be honest, I'm not happy how Casey just pushes Toby away because of what Nelly tells her, she didn't even find out if it was true. I'm sure that will come full circle so I'm moving on to the next book in this series. I'm loving it. Would recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars You won't regret.
4.0 stars.
I love Alyssa's writing. It's the 4th book I read of hers and I don't regret. If you're thinking of reading this one, I'd advise you to read the Flight series first as this series is a spin-off of the earlier books. Many characters come back and it doesn't explain in details the world as it was done in the previous books.
