The second thrilling book in the Westwood Witches series will take you on an electrifying journey out of this world and beyond.

Aero must go back to the Realm where the dark creatures are stirring. Their malevolent quest is about to set in motion events that could lead to the destruction of everything she holds dear.

Frightened and alone, Aero’s only hope is a new friend, a cat she calls Shadow. Can she find the answers she needs? And if she does, will it cost her everything?

A Sorcery of Shadows is the second book in this young adult fantasy series. If you’re a fan of Philip Pullman and Harry Potter books, then you’re in the right place.

Overview: Aero is frantic with worry for her mum and aunt since they disappeared searching for the Shadow Creatures in an alternate realm. Now, Aero must search that Realm to find her loved ones and deal with the impending darkness, but the Shadow Creatures’ malevolent quest is about to set in motion events that could lead to the destruction of everything the young witch holds dear.

Author Sarah Northwood conjures up a world quite similar in depth and dimension to that of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter with her dark and bewitching urban fantasy, “A Sorcery of Shadows”. Through the eyes of her main character, a 17-year-old witch named Aero Westwood, Northwood orchestrates a world brimming with fantastic creatures, family dynasties at war, and danger beyond imagination as her young witch assumes a great responsibility entrusted to her by her grandmother to protect both the magical realm and the world of humans from the threat of annihilation by the Shadow Creatures—beings who have “no worry about death, but consequently [do] not understand what it [is] to live.”

While Realworlders—humans who feel entitled to be the sole species ruling a world untainted by “freaks of nature”—and Shadow Creatures battle for control of the planet, Aero penetrates the Shadow Realm and carries on a desperate search for her abducted mother and aunt before an all-out war breaks out and all is lost. As in the first chapter of the series, trust is a main issue in that Aero learns the hard way that supposed friends and enemies are not always who and what they seem.

In a way, “A Sorcery of Shadows” is a coming-of-age tale in that the author presents her main character with many obstacles that either encourage or dissuade her from her goal, but continuously lead her into making decisions that will build her strength, courage, and fortitude as she prepares for an epic showdown with the head of the Shadow Creatures.

“A Sorcery of Shadows” is the second chapter in Author Northwood’s Westwood Witches Series. Like her first novel in this series, “The Westwood Witches: A Secret Discovered”, Northwood holds true to family values, inner strength, and compassion as she guides readers through a wondrous but dangerous world of magical folk and creatures on the brink of an epic battle with humanity and each other. I highly recommend this story for readers who love dark fantasy and magical realism, ages 13 and up.

Aero Westwood is back! I've been waiting to read this sequel to The Westwood Witches, and it doesn't disappoint. There's more magic, more Shadow Creatures, and more witches, as Aero learns how to use her powers to help save the Earth.

A lot of the questions from the first book are answered, while many more are raised, as loyalties are won and lost, and good and evil battle each other.

I love how the author develops the characters of Aero and her best friend, Lilly. Secrets are revealed, and others hinted at. There are also many new characters, such as the Southwoods, and Shadow the cat, and wonderful Aunt Louise is back too.

The author has woven a magical story that is perfect for older children and adults alike, a wonderful fantasy in another realm with unicorns, witches, fairies, that is tragic in places and heartwarming in others, a story that you can read over and over again and find something new each time. I can't wait for book 3!

The second book in the Westwood Witches was better than the first (even though the first was fantastic) I enjoyed the way it all shaped up as it progressed. I can not wait to read the next book in the series knowing this one was so great I know the next will be even better.

A Sorcery of Shadows is the gritty second instalment in The Westwood Witches series. We follow Aero as she musters the courage to step into the Realm in search of her mother and aunt. As Aero’s powers grow, she encounters the Fae, the eagle people, and a cat Aero names Shadow.
Complex at times, the author switches between Aero, her divided family and friends, the newly-introduced Southwood family, and the Realworlders intent on stealing the witches’ magical ability.
There are some heavier moments when the mechanics of penetrating one realm from the other are described, and I became a little confused at the narrative.
However, the author writes with immense poetic skill and her descriptions are stunning. I enjoyed the addition of Shadow, and the unexpected twist in his character. I’m also intrigued about the inclusion of the Southwoods, and I hope their role expands in future books. I’m keen to see how the series evolves!
