A USA TODAY BESTSELLER

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

May

Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.

Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

Alec

I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.

It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.

Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…

This is a stand-alone novel set in the True North world.

'Our rapid breathing and the breeze—those are the only two sounds I can hear. It’s beautiful.' Sarina Bowen’s True North series is an absolute favorite of mine. I’ve recommended them time and again, bought them for friends and the occasional stranger, and have never once wondered, ‘Will they enjoy them as much as I have?’ because they’re THAT good. Which is why seeing Speakeasy, the fifth book in the series, on my Kindle sent a thrill of excitement through me. May Shipley has fascinated me for a while now and seeing her story—experiencing her struggle—produced a different kind of feeling in me. One that’s really, really hard to explain. I definitely enjoyed this book. There are moments of happiness and humor—as if Alec wasn’t swoony-perfect enough, he also loves terrible jokes, just like me—but there’s also a roller-coaster of self-doubt and regret and uncertainty. It’s a heady, engaging, difficult-to-manage mix, and Ms. Bowen is gifted enough to make it work. Though I found this one a little slow to start—perhaps a side-effect of my overall mood?—the deeper into May and Alec’s story I got, the more I needed, needed, to know how it ended. And let me just say this: how it ended made my heart bounce around in my chest, battered but happy. And ready to recommend it—like the others in the series before it—to friends and strangers, alike. 'I feel a different kind of connection to her than I’m used to. As if she’s my person, and I’m hers. I’ve never had a person before. Maybe this is what all the songs on the radio are about.' ~ 4.5 Snaps in the Shape of an Awesome Book STARS ~

Speakeasy is a beautiful, insightful, sweet, sexy, and utterly heart-warming story from the truly exceptional True North series by Sarina Bowen. It is redemptive, hopeful, full of humor and just enough emotional angst to keep it real. It may easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone, but I recommend reading the series in order to fully understand the perspective of important secondary characters and to appreciate how each of their individual stories contributes to the ones that follow.

Speakeasy features two characters referenced but not developed in the previous books: May. the dynamic, passionate middle child in the Shipley clan; and Alec, who owns the local bar in the small town that anchors the series. It's an unlikely pairing, for multiple reasons: May is a recovering alcoholic who needs to steer clear of all things liquor-related; she's also bisexual and on the rebound from a failed relationship with her cheating girlfriend; Alec is known to be a player; he's no fan of the Shipley's, and the feeling is mutual. But when Alec jumps in to head off a catastrophic confrontation in his bar and ends up helping May leave her ex and move back in with her family, he goes from friend to rebound lover in a heartbeat, and all bets are off.

Their chemistry is off-the-charts hot; their banter is delightful; and they are perfect together -- as long as no one finds out the truth about their relationship. And therein lies the conflict.

As their relationship grows and their feelings develop, May is determined to keep Alec at arm's length. She's afraid to let go and trust her own judgment for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with him. He understands her reticence, and for a long time, he's patient, grateful for every stolen moment, determined not to pressure her for more. But he also fears that she is ashamed of him because of his history with her family and because of his own self-esteem issues. He feels that he doesn't deserve her, that he will never be good enough, again for reasons that have nothing to do with May. The tension between them is exquisitely painful, accurately depicting the insecurity and fear we experience when we feel unworthy to accept love, be it from within ourselves or from that special someone. And when the tension becomes unbearable, it inevitably leads them to a breaking point. But is it a point of no return? Or merely another obstacle on the path to a well-deserved HEA?

You'll have to read Speakeasy to find that out for yourself (and to understand the title of the book, too -- it's brilliant).

I didn't find May an easy character to love, so I applaud Sarina for giving me at least a dozen reasons to care enough to keep reading. The passages of the story that are told from her point of view reveal a woman of substance, compassion, honesty, and resilience. Her POV is crucial to understanding what drives her to behave as she does from beginning to end, and the same is true of Alec. Sarina is a master at using dual POV to make her characters stand out and resonate with readers. All of her stories are a joy to read, and Speakeasy is no exception; it's a perfect addition to a wonderful series.

When Sarina Bowen made us all elated with the news that there will in fact be another book in the True North series, I was elated. I loved the series so far, and I seriously couldn't wait to read more. I didn't expect the main female character to be May Shipley. Nor did I expect that there would me main hero, since in the previous books in the series, May was in a relationship with another woman, and she swore off man. So, I realized that this could easily be the book that took me outside my comfort zone. I'm not much of a daredevil when it comes to that, but I am a huge Sarina Bowen fan, so I guessed that I'd enjoy it regardless. And (un)surprisingly, I enjoyed it very much.

This book is intense. It starts with a bang: we meet Alec while he's helping May make a getaway after seeing her girlfriend cheating at none other place than the bar Alec owns. So, even the beginning, the set up of the story is pretty emotionally charged, and that's something that doesn't change throughout the book. May is a character that holds a lot of angst inside of her. She's a recovering alcoholic, who just caught her ex-girlfriend cheating, and who had a lot of disappointment in love in her twenty seven years. Not only that, she's also tired of everyone, even her family, expecting her to fall back to her vices at any point and treating her like glass, when she actually needs someone to remind her that she indeed is stronger than that. That's where Alec comes in! He seems like a laid-back, easygoing character with not that much depth at first glance. However, throughout the book we see that the first impression was the picture of an always-down-for-a-party playboy Alec Rossi was expected to be by the society, and not the one of a successful businessman and amazing friend he was aspiring to be. These are two characters that turn to each other, letting themselves enjoy the wild and powerful sexual attraction they feel towards each other in moments they feel truly wounded, and it is a raw, sensual, scorching relationship. However, that relationship soon becomes a tender friendship in which both May and Alec find comfort. When what they have starts to feel a lot like love, that's when things get messy.

"But love is messy, unpredictable, and occasionally loud. And I wouldn't have it any other way."

One little thing that could have made this book even more enjoyable for me was if that sexual attraction, and the tentative friendship the MCs had took a bit more time to turn into love they feel for one another. It felt a bit too sudden, but it was just a little speck on the specter of the wild emotions I felt while reading Speakeasy. Sarina Bowen creates such relatable, wounded, and so easily lovable characters, they inevitably make you feel and empathize even when you'd rather not, or think you couldn't/shouldn't. And that makesheru one of my favorite authors!

This atypical story definitely took me outside my comfort zone at first, but Sarina Bowen's incredible writing set over me like a comforting blanket, and let me enjoy this sexy and romantic story in its full glory. It's agsty, emotionally charged, and then unexpectedly funny at times, and utterly romantic. May and Alec grew into characters I loved, and their story is definitely one for the true fans of True North series: a bit unexpected, a bit angsty, a bit funny, and a whole lot of utterly beautiful and romantic. Recommended!

Gah! Just take my heart and hand it to Alec. I thought grumpy Griff was my favorite True North guy. Until now.

Sarina is one of my top authors and I will read anything she writes. But Speakeasy has a spot in my Top Favorite Sarina Books (which is quite impressive, I assure you). We've met Alec in previous books and although he is kind of what expected, he's so much more. He's silly, supportive, serious when needed, a bit wounded, and sooooo sexy.

May is coming off a bad breakup with her girlfriend and there is definitely some back and forth here about her sexuality. Not in the sense that she is confused. She identifies as bi but it's been a long time since she dated a guy so of course there is some hesitation on her part and on Alec's as well.

The friends with benefits vibe lasts for a while but you can see them getting more and more entangled emotionally. I loved every minute of their love story and wish I could read it again for the first time.

Sarina weaves a fresh story with lots of great characters every time but it at the top of her game with Speakeasy. I do recommend you read the series in order if you want to read them all as it gives great insight into character development. The descriptions of locations, buildings, etc make feel like I'm living in the story. I have zero complaints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, sexy, funny romance set in Vermont - another winner
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 31, 2018
I think I've run out of superlatives for this series. Let's just say three snaps in the shape of a Winner!

Alec Rossi is the older brother of Zara (Bountiful) and runs a bar in Vermont called the Gin Mill which specialises in craft beers - yep I wanna go there too. He has disliked the Shipley family ever since the father sacked his Dad and he never saw his father again. Then the eldest Shipley sibling, Griffin dumped his sister to start dating Audrey (Bittersweet) and he really has a hate on. Factor in that the Shipleys are akin to the Waltons (all apple pie and family dinners) whereas the Rossis are more trailer trash and tattoos and you have a bit of a feud.

One night he's tending bar when he recognises a woman locking lips with another woman in one of the booths as May Shipley's girlfriend. Conflicted about whether to tell May or let sleeping dogs lie matters are taken out of his hands when May walks into the bar and starts a fight. Her live-in girlfriend has started dating her ex behind May's back!

Poor May, the bi-sexual, alcoholic screw-up of the perfect Shipley family, she can just see her family's faces as they regard her with pity yet again when she drags her possessions back to the family farm. Living at home again! The only person who doesn't treat her like she's made of glass is Alec Rossi, the big ol' man-hoe. He makes her laugh with his corny jokes and seems to think that she's still a fun girl. When a favour turns into a raunchy one-night stand May thinks she may have found a way to get away from her family's helicopter caring and get in touch with her wild side again. But it's just friends with benefits right?

Oh Alec, how I love you. From your cool bar, glorious apartment, hot tub, corny jokes, family values and general hotness (shallow? like a puddle). I also loved May, so different rom her family, she struggled with guilt for being an alcoholic when she hadn't really had it tough compared to so many others.

Maybe all that sounds a bit angsty, but I promise it isn't. In fact, this is probably the least angsty of the series since Bittersweet. What made it a five star rating for me was that Sarina Bowen made me fall a little in love with these two as they make lewd puns. They demonstrate what love is really all about, feeling better just for being with someone, sharing laughs in and out of bed (or a truck or a hot tub) all set in the cutest, sexiest little town in Vermont.

When do we get Benito's book? I wann it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bookish Advisor review
Reviewed in Italy on May 29, 2018

5.0 out of 5 stars Sarina Bowen no seu melhor!
Reviewed in Brazil on June 3, 2018
