- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2014I know that the description page turner is overused, but I just sat up all night reading Spilt Symmetry. As with Borderliners, this book has a real sense of pace. Once the trek up the mountain begins to unravel, everything is up for grabs, as reality. science and faith collide.Great characters and genuinely disturbing. Excellent! Now for WORLDCULT..
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2014The alternating format did nothing to help the plotline and the archaic and heavy prose put the last nail in the coffin for me. Not recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2014KH Arcadio's second offering 'Split Symmetry' is the sequel to the much-loved 'Borderliners', and further establishes her as a master storyteller. This time, Arcadio takes us on a terrifying, but ultimately, enlightening journey to mountainous Italy. From the first page itself, she plunges the reader deep in the midst of adventure and in the clutches of an inexplicable intrigue that builds up to a pounding suspense as the pages turn. It all begins with a mountain hike that goes horribly wrong. Elena's group is torn apart mid-hike, and that's when unknown, cryptic elements start materializing leading to astonishing events that leave the reader gasping for more. You just can't turn the pages fast enough.
In Split Symmetry, we meet the delightful Elena Lewis once again... more cautiously optimistic this time, as she takes on the world one step at a time. As with Borderliners, Arcadio sinks her teeth into the main character, providing us with an in-depth look into Elena's past, and how it has shaped her to be the way she is today. Additionally, we are introduced to the dark and introspective James, and how he comes to affect Elena in ways she could never have imagined.
Not just for speculative fiction enthusiasts, this book is also for purveyors of thrillers, for readers of romance, as well as more serious readers who wish to delve deeper into the hidden meanings of life: what it is to survive and endure, what defines us, how it is to be ruled by fear, to be a slave to the terror of nature, what is feels like to love.
I don't say this lightly, but if you are planning to read only 5 books this year, make sure Split Symmetry is one of them... It is a book that will remain with you long after you turn the final page. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2014Thriller, adventure, a bit of romance and lots of science with a bit of fantasy thrown in for fun, makes Split Symmetry an entertaining read.
The author moves us between the perspectives of a small group of characters to tell the story, which takes place all in one day. The story follows hikers on the Gran Sasso peak in Italy, and scientists under the mountain in the National Laboratories. The Italian scientists are hoping for a ground-breaking discovery that day, having to do with fluctuations in time.
The author's prose is very descriptive, and explains not just the actions and events, but much more. The descriptions are very cinematic, bringing to the mind's eye images of the mountain, the quickly changing weather, the glimpses of climbers, the landslides. The adventure is greater than a mountain-climbing adventure, which is exciting in its own right. There are the earthquakes, the odd weather patterns, and the ripples in time for the climbers to deal with.
The author calls her book "a metaphysical thriller", which is a good description, but I call the book an "adventure". Even if you took away all the sci-fi and paranormal elements, the adventure story would still make a very entertaining book. It is well-written and well-edited, with a striking cover. Indie publishing at its best!
If you enjoy programs like The Twilight Zone, Lost, X-Files, and Stephen King novels, you should enjoy this novel. It is moody, atmospheric, and full of scary situations and trippy science such as "the wilder possibilities of quantum mechanics". It is a thrilling adventure with science and fiction combined expertly to create a cinematic mind-bender. I enjoyed it!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2014When a group of friends on an ill judged hike in the Italian mountains encounter a calamitous situation their true selves are revealed and we see how different members of the group react based on their previous relationships and experiences. Reading Split Symmetry, I felt as though I was with them there on the mountain where it all happened.
Not only can the reader visualise the characters, but also Kirsten takes us inside their minds, which adds to the drama of the story.
This thriller/sci fi/suspense is about people and relationships. The pace and imagination of a well-crafted plot will keep you on tenterhooks. making this a must read book, which will appeal to a wide variety of readers. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to the last of the trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisting, turning, tour de force
This trilogy just gets better. The characters are deeply drawn and completely engaging, and the story keeps you hooked from start to finish. It's atmospheric and thought provoking, exciting, emotional, and unpredictable.
This book really made me think about relationships, about science, and about where the lines really are in our world.
Brilliant.

Well written with an interesting subject matter. Not gripping as such but steadily builds with plenty of interest going on.
