A Sprig of Holly: Prequel 1 Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 105 ratings

An accident on a lonely mountaintop.
Alone and far from help in the freezing night.
Everything depends on an enchanted sprig of holly.

Greta lives with her grandfather in a cabin in the mountains.
The winter is harsh and they must venture out into the snow for more wood, or freeze.
Their handsome neighbour Matthias would help, but he is stuck in the snowy mountain passes and cannot get home.

But then disaster strikes.

The sleigh breaks, the logs are lost, and her grandfather is badly hurt.
Greta must get him back to safety before night sets in, but how?
Temperatures are dropping fast and they are all alone in the icy darkness.

…or are they?

This is a delightful tale full of winter magic with well developed fairy tale qualities that enrich the story telling. While the characters are not very complex, they are likeable and engaging, and the reader does develop a sense of empathy and concern for them at the beginning of the story that helps to hook them into the events of the tale. Of course, it is a short story, so the characters are not required to be developed in any depth or detail. It is enough that they do what they do and that the story is beautifully told.

The story also has some lovely Yuletide elements, although not so much that it is only a story for the Christmas season.

This would be a lovely story for family reading, particularly on a winter’s night.

A wonderful tale of whimsy and magic suitable for anyone young at heart. I think this would be a good candidate for a new TV Christmas Special in either animation or special effects version. Check it out and see if you agree.

This is a magical yuletime story about finding love and helping each other. This story is a little gem. The imagery in the story is wonderful. If you except snark and attitude you won't find it here. Its refreshing to read a story that shows a gentle loving relationship.

Young Greta and her grandfather are in trouble. It’s deep snow, they’re nearly out of fuel, so they go out to collect some. She’s hit and knocked unconscious by a falling tree and her grandfather is trapped beneath the trunk. All seems hopeless, but help comes from a surprising source.

This reminds me of the stories I read as a child. It’s got a bit of natural history and a dollop of magic. It’s only short but comes full circle and is a satisfying read. A little gem. I’m looking forward to Book 2.

A very enjoyable story; I'd recommend it a bit later in the year, close to Christmas. Evoking all the senses, and touching the emotions, this is the perfect story for a Yule tide evening.

The story is just the right length for a quick read. It has a winter theme and is Christmassy without being about Christmas.
