To Free A Spy: Deception and Revenge in Washington, Tokyo and Moscow Paperback – July 12, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
He’d never thought of himself as a criminal but when he is blackmailed by someone who knows what happened and his hopes for the White House appear to be evaporating quickly, there is nothing, nothing, he won't do to eliminate that threat—including trading a sensitive U.S. Government database for the secrecy he must have!
The U.S. President is wary of turning the investigation over to the U.S. intelligence community to investigate itself and calls on former intel operative Cam Warfield to identify the betrayer and assess the damage that has been done.
Warfield doesn’t like it but never flinched when the President called him in. Cam Warfield was revered within the intel community for his career successes but left a few years earlier to run an intelligence training center as a contractor for the Army.
Digging through layers of lies, Warfield discovers that a CIA database containing the names of Russian scientists who still had access to bomb-grade nuclear material left over from the Cold War had been compromised. Bomb-grade uranium was now in the hands of terrorists!
But as Warfield zeroes in on the likely traitor and plot, his own CIA and FBI set out to kill him!
Despite the target on his back, can Warfield survive long enough to eliminate the nuclear package that is on its way to Los Angeles at that very moment and annihilate millions of Americans? The only way to stop it is for the U.S. to shoot a Japanese passenger airliner out of the sky. Will the President do it? He has minutes to decide!
To Free a Spy is a tense standalone thriller. If you like layered characters, breathtaking twists and edge of your seat stakes, then you’ll love Nick Ganaway’s international intrigue, played out in Russia, Tokyo, Paris and Washington.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014I found this book to be an interesting first thriller novel. Ganaway brings in a host of characters and ties them all together as events evolve to an end. It all starts with the death of a prostitute in Atlantic City, to the President searching for a mole in the government, to nuclear material being stolen in Russia, the creation of a nuclear bomb and threat to the US, all finally being wrapped up in the final chapters of the book. These events all occur over a period of a few years. Ganaway ties all of the diverse stories together and makes sense out of them all.
The hero of the book is not a superhero who has no problems. He has a lot of problems and in fact sort of disappears during part of the story because of things that occur that he has no control over. This helps to bring some sense of realness to the book. I hope to see Cameron Warfield in future books.
A very good read. It is nice how all of the diverse parts are brought together.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2013This book tells a remarkably comprehensive and varied story in an easy to read form. There are numerous sub-endings, which most readers will think is an expected end. Then there's another chapter, another problem solved, but not an expected ending . This was an absolute joy to read, and I'm ready for the next book in what I hope will be a long running series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2013A Kindle book I picked up from Amazon when it was one of their featured freebies. Boy, was I surprised at the quality. If not the best freebie I have picked up, it's right near the top.
There is something here for everyone. Murder mystery, spies, moles, revenge, political intrigue, every thriller genre I tend to read. At first I thought the author was trying to make the book too busy, but he tied everything together very well.
Unlike Daniel Silva, Vince Flynn, Alex Berenson or some of the other authors in this genre, this novel does not take place over days, weeks or months. This is spread over several years. Plenty of time to develop characters and reasons for the actions of those characters.
The author names some of his favorite authors at the end of the novel. I could have named most of them for him while reading his work, as actions were familiar. Yet he really didn't dwell too much on any one author's style or subject matter. Just adapted that work to his own writing style.
Those who enjoy this type novel will find this well worth their time reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2014Recommended for avid reader die-hard spy aficionados who do not mind a plot line a bit over the top. The usual suspects: CIA, FBI, terrorists, spies etc are all there.
The story started off fast, gripping you. But already on the first page of my kindle I saw just 2 paragraphs . The second paragraph fills the whole next page with solid text. What is this? A dissertation? Too much explaining that makes it hard to read.
And it goes on and on like that. In between there are passages with more white space where the story flows well, But there is just too much "Tell" and not enough "Show". There are whole sections that does not advance the story at all and I started to turn page after page scanning for something to happen.
The story is good but it needs some serious editing. Whole sections can be cut out without loosing anything. It will make it a better read. The review of David Island: The Never Ending Story, hits it right on the head. Some parts are just too unbelievable, where our hero plows through flood water as if he is Kiefer Sutherland in the TV series 24. Bringing essential actors back from the dead also seemed a bit over the top. How can the reader try to figure out what is happening when you don't get the right clues?
But i still liked the story. It moves forward well, when you learn to turn pages over the slow unnecessary parts. So I gave it 3 stars with the hope that the author will revise the story, scenify and get more paragraphs and white space, cut down on the long descriptive parts that do not advance the plotline and move the explanation of why someone didn't die forward to where it belongs.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2013Wow!! I don't even know where to begin! This is a first novel by Nick Ganaway, let me say! It really is reminiscent of all the best of the best suspense writers.....David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Ken Follett, and Daniel Silva! This story is very pertinent to modern day politics, which we all know is a mess. But this story does have heroes, the President (Cross) and a former Colonel and his Military sidekick, and a few more. The bad, though, are really bad.....the heads of certain investigative groups, and a famous terrorist. There are many facets to this story that keep you guessing and reading. It is so well written and interesting, I kinda disappeared into the book.......you know what I mean......I was engrossed! I think this is only the second review I've written of over 50 that I would want to give more than 5 stars.....it really is that good.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2015I've never written a review before and I plan to keep this one brief. It's been a while since I started reading a book and then wanted to push the author in front of a bus the next day because I was up all night reading it. DO NOT START READING THIS BOOK ON A SUNDAY OR YOU WILL HAVE A TERRIBLE MONDAY!!!
I wish the hero had been more of an operator but I'm not complaining. Great detail without being ridiculously verbose, fantastic story, interesting twists, not terribly predictable like so many in this genre, well edited, and is now one of my favorite books. I'll read each and every one of Nick's books in the future (I can call him Nick because his damn book kept me up all night) but I'll start them on Saturday morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best for a long time !!
This book is excellent from the very first chapter, through to the end. It's Nick Ganaway's first political thriller, and it maintains a pace and authenticity that keeps the reader gripped throughout. I took it on holiday, and couldn't put it down until I finished. Twists and turns, and political intrigue, it gives a fabulous insight into American politics, allied to CIA/FBI involvement. The best book I have read in a long, long time !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good spy book
Lots of action from the beginning of the story. Lots of twists and turns. It's ben a long time since I hadn't read a breathless story like this one. The fly in the oitment is the end : the few last pages see a murdered woman come back and make sure all the bad ones go to jail and the very good ones have a happy life ever after.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Research and Down-home Folksy Characters
To Free A Spy rocks at the opening, containing measured amounts of dialogue and description with an emphasis on the story being related by the words of the characters. As well, it blasts forward using a great mix of dialogue to narrative in the last 100 pages. Unfortunately, the book bogs down in the middle with a preponderance of extensive, narrative-based descriptions involving sometimes-unresolved conflicts and events, such as the explosion of a vehicle belonging to a retired Colonel (and main character) that never gets an adequate explanation as well as other protracted descriptions.
In the section in Japan, the quantity of quality research ties the writer’s hands instead of liberating him. We are led from one highly improbable scene to another. Would a pizza deliveryman take all the risks for a stranger, the main character that he does during the sequence about penetrating the Narita Airport security? Maybe, but this reader doubts it. As well, the even-handedness of the President concerning the latitude he gives to Cam Warfield seems a tad unbelievable. In addition, the way that Warfield gets out of the most dangerous situations without a scratch remains incredible.
Despite these problems, I really liked the book as a whole. The author displays enthusiasm for his subject and his characters succeed in being alive on the page. He very fruitfully recreates the folksy down-home feel of the south of the United States in his three-dimensional people. Karly’s surprise appearance at the close and the way the system manipulates the ex-chief of the CIA struck me as highly plausible. As I said, I learned a lot of interesting stuff during the long spates of narrative in the book and would suggest that the debut novelist re-read some Da Silva to take note of the consistent nature of the relationship between the amounts of dialogue versus the preponderance of description in his books. I am looking forward to more of this writer as he matures on the thriller scene and maybe builds himself a new niche based on great research revealed through the words of his well-rounded characters instead of the narrative.
