Melinda lives in England, in the United Kingdom, near to an old Roman town that’s now called Chester. She enjoys hopping over the nearby border into Wales, so she can climb the beautiful mountains of Snowdonia and hunt for Welsh dragons.

She has a passion for writing in rhyme for little ones, and she loves illustrating her own stories. Most of this takes place while lying on her side using an iPad, due to a stubborn old neck fusion that hates desks.

Her many picture books, for ages 3-6, are also attributed to a team of cuddly toy co-writers, called the “Top of the Wardrobe Gang”. Please don’t tell young fans, but these cuddly toys do not in fact live with a boy called Billy. They live on Melinda’s sofa, and can be very badly behaved. Some of them did live on the top of her wardrobe, but they came down years ago and have refused to return.

When Melinda isn’t writing, illustrating, or climbing mountains, she loves visiting different places around the world with her husband, and spending time with her family.

You can find out more about Melinda, the Top of the Wardrobe Gang, and their books by visiting their website at https://topofthewardrobegang.weebly.com. Typing “Melinda Kinsman” into the Amazon search box works well if you want to find all their books too.

A Wonderful Growth Mindset Lesson

A Wonderful Growth Mindset Lesson
A delightful story about having a positive mindset: I feel this book instills a strong message to children about overcoming inhibition and understanding that they can achieve so much with a confident outlook. In this story, Stanley receives advice from his Grandpa that helps him to see himself achieving more than he thought possible. The book also offers educational lessons at the back and discussion questions relevant to the story. I would recommend this book to all young children.

Mom woke Stanley (son) up & reminded him it was treeball cup day.
at Forest School the students are divided into 2 groups.
Whoever wins gets the gold cup trophy.
Stanley’s grandpa had won it 5 years in a row.
    Treeball is not Stanley’s expertise.
Rosie tries her best to get Stanley to cheer up.
Ms. Bluebell (owl) announces blue/orange teams will be first.
    Reds/greens are next.
Stanley’s grandpa was watching him all the time.

What advice did he give him?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) Dragon storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (capabilities), Dragon movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

British author Melinda Kinsman both writes and illustrates her popular children's books from her home on a small peninsula called The Wirral, in North West England. Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, and she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. That most assuredly does not deter her from composing excellent books that entertain both children and the lucky adults reading to them!

STANLEY DRAGON HAS AN AMAZING BRAIN initiates a new and very impressive series from Melinda - the GROWTH MINDSET STORIES, and it is pleasure to discover her new outreach to children’s needs to accept challenges and overcome setbacks.

Keeping the reader’s attention secure, the book opens with an invitation to look for Stanley’s pet snail Horace in each of the illustrations that follow. Stanley is awakened by his mother reminding him it is Treeball Cup Day, a challenge for playing Treeball – a sport Stanley has never conquered, much less liked. Although invited by his teammates to participate, he doesn’t even try, knowing that he is ‘just no good at Treeball.’ The team wins some points, but loses the game and congratulate each other for trying an doing their best, Stanley doesn’t feel proud and returns home, crying to his grandpa (who was a Treeball champion in his day) that he’s no good at anything. The advice from grandpa – “You have an amazing brain in your head that controls what you think and feel and do. It makes YOU…like a muscle, you can make it grow and get stronger…mistakes help your brain learn what doesn’t work, so it can fine what does.” And with that sage advice, Stanley feels more positive – and changes his outlook!

Once again a delightfully written and illustrated book of adventure and entertainment that has something for everyone, including some questions and answers about the story – and a fine section on Mindset with ideas for parents and teachers to reinforce positivity and growth. Melinda just gets better and better! This is a terrific new series! Grady Harp, October 20

This is the first book in a new series of mindset books for children in elementary school. Stanley is dreading his day at school because it is the day for The Treeball Cup Competition. Stanley's grandpa used to be a champion, but Stanley has no talent for it. His team members encourage him, but Stanley doesn't even try to do his best. When the team loses, they display good sportsmanship, but Stanley feels guilty. His outlook changes when he has a discussion with his grandpa. Stanley is surprised to learn that much of our success is determined by hard work and growing our brain capacity.

The illustrations in this picture book are adorable and endearing for readers young and old. There are discussion questions and a find the snail activity as well as posters and affirmation cards to print and personalize. I highly recommend this book to encourage self-esteem and enhance the growth potential of readers, especially those ages four through eight.

A new series begins by this author...And, it is indeed wonderful. Written for ages 4 to 8f and grades P to 2, it emphasized the importance of being positive.

Stanley Dragon has a pet snail named Horace that will entertain the little ones throughout the pages. The invitation by the author is to look for the snail on each of the pages. This will keep the little ones looking throughout the story.

Stanley attends Forest School and each year they have a competition called Treeball. Stanley feels as though he is not good enough at the 'throw, catch and hit' game and just is not interested in it. His grandpa was excellent at this game ..his team winning the competition 5 years in a row...He gives Stanley some excellent advice about being positive and how to use his brain to accomplish tasks in his life.

The book details for the little ones the manner in which to alcheive a growth mindset...Such a wonderful addition to the truly outstanding story...

After the story is concluded, the author has a Q & A portion about the story.. Another great addition to this one.

My highest recommendation both for the story and also the drawings...

    Most highly recommended.

    I really enjoyed Melinda's book.
The example she uses in her story is so relatable for many kids. I also love that she explains how the growth mindset helps your brain. This step is great as it puts faith in the childrens interest in learning more. I will use this book over and over with my kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of a nurturing new series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2020
I really enjoyed discovering this book - the first in Melinda Kinsman's new Growth Mindset series for young children. With bright and attractive illustrations and endearing characters young readers meet Stanley the young dragon who feels everyone is good at something except him. When Treeball Cup day arrives at school it seems that everyone is excited to take part - but Stanley hates Treeball because he is no good at it and has got to the point where he doesn't even want to try. So many children (and adults!) will feel for poor Stanley. But Grandpa helps him understand that actually we are all good at something (not necessarily the same things of course) and that skills and abilities develop and grow with practice if we want them too. Stanley soon learns that he has an amazing brain that will "grow" and strengthen its new skills and learning when he perseveres and learns from mistakes.
Having a positive and growth mindset is an important and healthy concept to teach even very young children and Melinda Kinsman does this well with her mixture of story and teaching. There is extra information to help parents/teachers understand what a growth mindset is too and how to use the story concept. I love the inclusion of activities, including a link to a set of Positive Affirmation Cards to make and use.
I can't wait to see the rest of this series and find out what else Stanley is going to discover about himself. This looks like a series that will be a great asset to parents/teachers/counsellors needing resources for building children's self-esteem and healthy thinking skills. Recommending.

Stanley frowns when he remembers that today is Treeball Cup Day. He hates Treeball and sees no reason to even try and he’s miserable.

After the game Stanley heads home, sad and downcast. Grandpa had been watching and gives the dragon some sound advice. Do you know when you want to share some wisdom with your children but they don’t want to hear it? Well they’ll listen to Grandpa because his message is interesting and clear. I wish I had this book when my children were little.

I won’t spoil the story but let’s just say that after Grandpa’s chat, Stanley is filled with positivity, inspiration and good vibes.

This is a ‘feel good book’ that every child deserves to experience.
