Sacrificing Starlight Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

This is one of the most thrilling, breakneck paced and chilling novels that I have read.

www.littlemrsreader.wordpress.com

Time’s running out for DCI Hunter. His wife and child are missing, perhaps even dead. Unable to pursue those responsible he’s transferred to the wild landscape of Cornwall where another child has disappeared.

Alice Trevelyan’s father has his own agenda and wants retribution for the loss of his little girl and metes out his own violent justice.

Will Trevelyan help or hinder?

Hunter has to make his move if he wants to save Starlight.

But can anyone in this remote location be trusted?

A 5 star read…a fast paced thriller with brilliant plotting and characters.

I would definitely recommend to all you thriller fans out there.

David Pipe was born in 1949 in a small Essex village. He attended Cheshunt Grammar School before studying chemistry at Hull. He worked in the pharmaceutical industry in England and South Africa then earned a PhD in organic chemistry from Imperial College. After spells at universities in Geneva and Mulhouse he joined the oil industry in Germany where aged 53 he gratefully took a redundancy package. Following a period of self-employment he wound down his business, eventually giving it up to scratch the writing itch which produced his first books, Sacrificing Starlight and Henry's Tale.

His Border terrier Henry was the inspiration for his second book, Henry's Tale. Unfortunately Henry left us at almost fifteen in 2023.

When he’s not writing David spends his spare time reading, swimming and Nordic Walking. He is married and lives with his wife and their new Border terrier Blix in Hamburg.

This book is the ultimate marmite of the literary world. Readers will either love it or hate it. The storyline is set out in the Product Information section on this site. Any further elucidation would doubtless lead to spoilers.

The two main protagonists are (i) DCI Hurdle: laconic, enigmatic and hard-bitten and (ii) Ben Trevelyan: lone wolf war veteran, vigilante and, some might say, sadist. They are both on a mission, apparently to track down and eradicate a paedophile ring.

The adult-on-adult violence committed by these two is, at times, grotesque; but in the case of Trevelyan at least, understandable. There are times when people feel compelled to take the law into their own hands, despite the consequences for themselves and their disrespect for the rule of law and due process. I can sympathise with their actions in this case, as the poison of paedophilia courses through the veins of a community of so-called respectable members of the Establishment.

A minor gripe: with a plethora of characters of "War and Peace" proportions, and multi points of view, the book would have made my reading easier with a cast list in its front matter. On the hand, the twist, or "reveal", wasn't telescoped and I was eased into it at the appropriate time.

However, it was the theme that most resonated with me. It's a story that should be told, if only to widen public knowledge of the endemic cancer of child abuse which appears to be metastasing across all classes, cultures and religions in today's society i.e. it is regrettably not restricted to works of fiction.

On several levels this is a story that raises Juvenal's famous question: quis custodiet, ipsos custodes? who watches the watchers? For that alone it deserves the 5* - even though I hate marmite.

Sacrificing Startlight delves into a missing child case and the child abuse that occurred. The subject matter of this novel is tough to swallow, and the graphic scenes were hard to read. None of that took away from the story.

I had difficulty with the characters. They didn’t have a lot of backstory, so it took me a bit to connect with them. However, the pace of this novel kept me invested. It was a realistic feeling novel and kept me on high emotion.

Overall, Sacrificing Starlight is not for the faint of heart. The theme of child abuse is never easy to read about. However, I thought the novel was compelling, realistic and well paced. I recommend checking it out.

At first, the high level of English is challenging for a non-native reader. But then, one gets caught by the action and can't take the book away before the ending. Action is breathtaking and the plot captivating.

Honestly, I did not care for this book. It had a good plot, but, the way it was written, it was truly hard to understand. There were parts where I had no idea what was going on and who was who. Occasionally, the author would go back and forth between first and last names making it rather hard not to think that they are all different people. The parts that I did not understand were very gruesome and hard to read. This book is not someone with a weak stomach like myself. Overall, I though it had a good plot just hard to comprehend. In the end, I did sort of understand what was happening and what the author meant.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Good, Fast-Paced Whip-Smart Thriller!
Reviewed in Canada on May 31, 2019
Crack homicide detective DCI Hunter is devastated by the disappearance of his wife and child, so when the chance to solve another child's disappearance occurs, he's more than willing to put his considerable skills to work to solve the case. Ben Trevelyn, father of another missing child, is so broken by her loss that he resorts to dangerous, desperate, and horrific measures to find her. This book hooked me from the get-go, with its opening scenes that place the reader at the scene of the crime. Hunter, initially confident that he can solve the crime, isn't so sure once he meets the habitués of this small Cornish town: some are strange, others are stranger still, and some are evil personified. A word of warning and potential spoiler: if you are a dog lover, there is a scene towards the end where a dog is murdered by her owner. I'm a pet parent, so I skipped over it. That part aside, this is a strong book that isn't for the faint of heart, combining the crime/thriller genre with horror, and including the frank depiction of some truly heinous crimes against children. If you're a horror fan who likes your murder violently shaken, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where have the little children gone?
Reviewed in Australia on December 4, 2023
Hilary Matthews takes her labrador, Lucy, for a walk along Seddon beach and Lucy finds a young girl lying face down, dead in the surf. Enter Detective Hunter whose wife and child are missing. He’s been assigned to investigate the death. Ben Trevelyan’s daughter, Alice is also missing and he wants to find her. So begins a journey of uncovering a pedophile ring and all the people involved and what happens to them in the search for the missing children. This book is a definite page-turner and not for the faint-hearted because it is quite ‘dark’ in places like (spoiler alert) wanting to kill a child as an offering to the Demons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spannender Cornwall Krimi mit aktueller gesellschaftlicher Relevanz
Reviewed in Germany on February 7, 2017
Absolut lesenswert!

Reviewed in Germany on June 6, 2018
This is a subject for every parent, as a parent myself I can not for the life of me imagine the horror of experiencing the loss of a child due to the sickness of these monsters. This is an absolute read for any parents.
Fantastically written, and written with passion, you almost got the feeling of being there. It captivated me from start to finish.
Absolutely brilliant, well done and keep the books coming...
