- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAbsolutely beautiful storyline, as usual Ms Mack used her fantastic storytelling skills to make this reader fall in love with Natasha & the love of her life Cam. It seems there should be s sequel called "the rest of the story" of Natasha, Cam & Baby.
Great Read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2016Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseDorothy Mack is a real hit or miss author. I found this to be one of her best written books in points of composition and style, with better character development to a point; however, the hero, Cameron (nickname Cam, UGH!) is a flat, emotionally disturbed momma's boy who makes life hell for Tasha, an outstanding and independent lady for the times. The secondary characters are actually better portrayed. The terms frigid, cold, untrusting, physically brutal and unworthy are a good picture of Cameron. (Over) intelligent, exuberant, sensitive to shortcomings, (Under) rated, valued, and loved, Determined beyond reason, unwise to the ways of society, more forgiving than humanly possible, even given love in the equation, describe Tasha. Through a series of mishaps, nastily imagined scenarios with no foundation in truth, an impossible relationship develops. Taking place during the last year or so of the Napoleonic war, it culminates with the battle of Waterloo, a revelation of misapprehension and undying love, a child, and a woman who (sadly, because this relationship is not resolved) believes she has finally won in her battle to save her marriage, husband and child, and her life. This is a good look at mental illness as Cam exhibits bipolar and schizophrenic behaviors and how it affects relationships. No offense to anyone suffering from either. Then the story ends without true resolution. If you are looking to try Dorothy Mack for the first time I would recommend her story "The Last Waltz" instead.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is 1 of 3 in a Series I have discovered.
1) Steadfast Heart - a bit disturbing and inconsistent (but you will see more of the relationship in #3.
2) Reluctant Heart - haven't read yet
3) Awakening Heart - Great read
Dorothy Mack is an excellent author in general. I have loved all the other books of hers I have read (about 17 books). So don't judge her writing based on this book). Her previous books I've read, are well written and thought out. Her stories are always engaging, even ones with more simple stories are so well written that they are hard to put down.
This story though I wasn’t in love with. It was slightly more revealing in its marital “love” scene if you could call it that. Still tactful yet a bit more descriptive than I prefer in a book, which I imagine was due to its context of her husband forcing his interests. Then the second time to show it was a good experience.
Ultimately I felt the latter portion after marriage was not consistent in personalities. Both responses to one another seemed a bit over done and not in line with their personalities. His forcing himself on her, then no communication. When he realized how wrong he is, he ignores her. Obviously he felt guilty, yet it seemed over done. Then once they finally made up, his reaction at leaving her for awhile makes no sense. He seemed to have realized he was in love, yet was cold when leaving. Refusing to take her with made no sense either.
When she followed him, after learning she was pregnant, for him to assume in a blink of an eye that she had cheated on him again was ridiculous. First of all doing math that quickly was weird, but not even listening at all was idiocy. Then just before giving birth he comes to his senses almost randomly, what changed his mind. I wasn’t convinced someone acting so stupid would then so change suddenly. So I was more annoyed than anything with the characters.
Ultimately in the second half I didn’t like him much nor did I think much of her. Of course wanting to make the marriage successful was a noble intention, but built on his treatment of her once married, I felt her personality would have reacted more drastic and left him. Certainly the repetitive accusations without good basis was a reason to leave him.
In addition, what was the purpose of his cousin making sure the front desk knew he left right away after her cousin was obviously trying to cause problems? What was the purpose of his aunt acting as chaperone, and yet when he accused her of playing him false the aunt didn’t speak to him and assure him there was no reason for him to think such a thing? Allowing him to act like an idiot. It seemed like it was set up for the issues to be able to be resolved, yet neither of these things seemed to help the issue or ever be addressed.
The book was well written and the story developed well until 65% through, then I just didn’t like how the characters played out after the marriage. Sorry. But I'm liking the 3rd book in the series immensely, like her previous 17 books. Despite the mixed reviews on the 2nd book, I will read just to complete the series, I hate not getting a full picture. I'm hoping I will be ok with book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo yeah as others have said this book is good for 65% of the time. It still suffers from they love each other because I said so syndrome and not enough hints that they are. Seriously, I know times were different then but the author was born in our time, so she needs to apply some of that to her interpretation.
I can get that a man of that age might act the way the hero does but the the heroine doesn't mind long enough and he never really apologizes. He's never called to account for any of his bad behavior. To say this guy is an entitled male is saying something. And it never changes. Not really.
Do I believe there might be a relationship like this back in the day. Yes. Do I believe this is a good thing and a happy, healthy one? No. I kept thinking, run Natasha run.
And for those who might give it a pass because of the time, consider Pride and Prejudice, Darcy is an ass and proposes as an ass--and is rejected because of it. Austin a women of her time did not consider it a happy ending until he'd been brought down a peg. She even took down the father a peg for speaking ill of the very silly mother. In Edgeworth and Radcliffe's tales men who behave like this are not considered good guys either.
Wuthering Heights is considered a tragic tale.
I can only think the author actually wrote this as a series of misunderstandings to be happily resolved and the editor thought it would be edgier if it was done differently, film school conflict.
But it isn't. It is a terrible message to women about what they should expect in romance. And what they have a right to ask for in one. The writer is better than most so it is very disappointing she fell back into destructive plot devices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling; masterfully written.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have yet to be disappointed by this distinguished author, and revelled in the intense, suspenseful relationships and exciting events, somehow sparely but brilliantly conveyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Regency story combined with history
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story is comflicated enough to keep in interested. Also as someone who is interested in history it is good to get the background with some information about Europe and the battle of Waterloo. Enjoyed the well drawn characters in the novel with the hope right to the finish that things would end up well.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s written by Dorothy Mack! Perfection! She is one of those authors whose every novel is a gem. The only trouble is I read them faster than she can write them, are you with me? :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have become a steadfast admirer of Dorothy Mack after reading some of her quicksilver writing, wit, fun and frolic and amusing capers, and find her the best inheritor of Georgette Heyer's style. Even so, this story was a bit too contrived and long drawn, with the heroine turning too docile as the story progresses and the hero a bit too dense. The story would have merited a five-star otherwise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite nauseating
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the only book by her I have hated. The man was insufferable and why anyone would persist in loving him was beyond Mr. I felt sick after reading it.
