Step in the Dark (Pollard & Toye Investigations Book 8) Kindle Edition
Expect the unexpected…
The peace of the sleepy English town of Ramsden is disturbed when a corpse is discovered in highly peculiar circumstances.
The victim – a young woman – was found at the bottom of the library stairs where she worked with a fractured skull.
But did she fall or was she pushed?
As the local constabulary delve deeper into history of the library at the Ramsden Literary and Scientific Society they begin to suspect a larger conspiracy could be at work.
They enlist the help of Scotland Yard and Detective Superintendent Pollard and Detective Sergeant Toye are put on the case.
What secrets are being hidden by Ramsden’s leading families? Could missing books from the library hold the key to the case?
Or are Pollard & Toye on the wrong track altogether…?
Step in the Dark is the eighth cosy village mystery in the Pollard & Toye crime series: an intriguing police procedural set in rural England.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2020I think I give almost all books I read 5 stars. Why? I love to read! Those driven to write have a passion for it, whether good with a phrase or not.
But Lemarchand writes a good series, and Pollard, Toye, Jane, well, they are real, well defined, and a reader can picture them during the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019As always, a nice ending of this book, with all loose ends filled in.
This series just seems to be getting better with every book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2017All of her books are well written and have good plots.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2019A classic British mystery set in a small town. The plot was cleverly written, and I did not guess the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2019I've enjoyed this entire series. Usually with a lengthy collection the characters become somewhat mechanical and the plots rather thin. Now on book 8, I was really surprised and delighted with the ending of this mystery. It was really very cleverly done, and I can honestly say I didn't figure out who the culprit was. I actually had to read to the end to find out "whodunit!" Fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
I am enjoying reading this series of books nice light read and the interaction between Pollard &Toye is developing with each book. They do tend to leave some unanswered questions at the end which I find irksome.

4.0 out of 5 stars the blurb on these books is really unhelpful.
To be fair ,I think 3.75 stars for what was for me the weakest book in the series. Although the solution was feasible ,I found it a bit tame. In addition the atmosphere of the town was not as convincing as much of the Devon bases of her earlier books --this was clearly Oxfordshire .
I find the comments of the blurb to be fatuous and risible; it is not a village in any sense . It lacks Christies cunning yet is on a higher level than MC Beaton . Why not just say it is more reminiscent in many ways of some later FW Crofts . In addition there are many little pointers to the similar partnership between Bellair's Littlejohn and Cromwell although in those books there is a much higher level of wit and dry humour. Marchand however, sustains a good plot line and I do find them a goodish " modern" Gadetective crime fiction.
I was surprised that this was written in 1976 ; in many respects 1956 would be more accurate . There are domestics galore and lots of deference in addition to unlimited albeit not always competent police resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing
Another fascinating crime story in the delightful Pollard and Toye series of investigations. The theft of valuable books and priceless stamps, and a dead body at the foot of the staircase. Did the blackmailer fall or was she pushed?
