For the Strange and Surprising: Where the Mongrels Are: Book 1 (Where They Are) Kindle Edition
I’m a catastrophe waiting to happen—I always have been.
When a waterspout drops me on the shores of a seemingly deserted island, I soon realize that I’m not on Earth and I’m not alone.
This new world is full of dangers, from sea monsters and feuding tribes to poisonous food and beasts that lurk in the shadows. None of those things are as dangerous as the Mongrel men appointed to guard and teach me.
All I want to do is go home, but the island has no intentions of letting me leave.
I’ll be forced to interact with total strangers to survive this perilous land surrounded by treacherous waters.
My dreams of happiness sink into the dark depths below as I struggle to save myself from certain death.
The Mongrels will learn that fear makes a person reckless.
My name is Adelaide Storm.
But they’ll call me Ada Stormbrave.

About the author

MF Adele resides on the outskirts of the Rocket City in Alabama. She lives in her overactive imagination, often fueled by caffeine and no sleep. When she isn’t writing, MF is outdoors with her family or obsessing over spicy margaritas and cigars.
MF writes what she connects with. Her heroines are often emotionally challenged while remaining strong-willed. They’re snarky, chaotic, and refuse to be damsels in distress. She has a flair for misdirection, keeping her readers guessing until the end. Within the complex worlds she builds, her stories feature epic battles, murders, and graying the lines of morality.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor the Strange and Surprising was a lighter, slow burn read that had me smiling constantly. Ada, the FMC, is a delight to read with her relatability, sense of humor, and curiosity. She's also strong, but not in an in-your-face way. I wondered through the whole book what I would do if I ended up in her shoes and was thrown into a strange world and I can promise that I'd deal with it all with much less grace and humor than Ada did. The story is multi-POV with a fantastic set-up of the world while also laying breadcrumbs and questions for the rest of the series.
We meet four main guys in this first book and I think they're each perfect for Ada. Even the one she constantly bickers with and I hope that once they get on the right wavelength that the banter remains between them. Ada has basic information on the guys (as do we) and all of the guys are a pre-established friend group. Some of the possible deeper connections and development between Ada and the guys was held up by a decision she had to make and I expect that we'll get deeper into their characters and relationships in the next books. But the chemistry and tension (oh the tension) is a nice foundation already.
There are a lot of unknowns happening in this new fantasy world so I also expect Ada and the guys will be exploring and navigating some mysteries together. There are attacks on the tribe, a possible traitor, mysterious beasts, and who knows what else cause it's a strange new world! Ada also has a nicely developing female friendship so yay for that! No other woman drama and no mm/ff in this first book. No cliffhanger ending, just more story to unravel. This was an easy decision to add book 2 to my TBR and I'm curious how the greater series will connect since this is the first trilogy in a larger series to come (there are breadcrumbs for future FMCs I'm assuming).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI downloaded this book without reading the description but ended up wildly enjoying the ride. Watching Ada integrate into the Mongrels and learn more about the world she’d washed ashore on was captivating, and I quickly downloaded the sequel to learn more about how her relationships progress. My one downside was that the plot advanced quickly and characterization of the love interests felt overall lacking.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAmazing start of a new series by Author MF Adele! The world building in this story was absolutely amazing and laid out such a detailed picture in my head. She honestly creates some of the best worlds I have ever read.
For the Strange and Surprising follows Adelaide or Ada as she goes by, when she washes up on an island after being sucked into a waterspout while fishing in Florida. There she meets the Mongrels who are in a different world but have had several people from earth appear over the years including the Queen. We also meet the four guys who are just as affected by her as she is them with a little push from Spiran (the island) and the Queen who seems to know a lot but gives away very little. Ecaeris the prince, Toladus the guard, Imryll the doctor, and Connak the hunter…4 friends who each have a different type of relationship with Ada but seem to keep being pushed together. There’s a lot of sexual tension in the book but no steam, it’s currently a slow burn but I’m loving the build up. The guys were waiting to see if she was going to stay or return to Earth and Ada I think was doing the same.
Several mysteries were brought up throughout the book. Who is Ada’s stalker? What’s happening to the Mongrels? Who is Ada destined to be when she has characteristics or each guy so far without being what they are (hunter/healer)? And with her elemental powers appearing before she unlocked them…how powerful will she be? I’m so excited to see where the next book takes us. Once again MF Adele has given us an outstanding 5 star read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a wondrous start to a new fantasy series ✨
This is a slow burn, slow build fantasy reverse harem story, told in Multi-POV, with incredible world building, fantastic characters, light but plentiful humor, discovering the magic of the world and uncovering its many secrets.
I absolutely love the FMC Ada. She's got that understated badass vibe. The story is written in a way that leaves me wondering what I would do in Ada's shoes, swept up onto an island of another world and discovering all of the things she is. I'd love want some fng pants and pockets, that's for sure - there's a lot where I'd follow Ada's path. I love the adventure of the story and the slow build relationships with the guys.
This is book 1 of a planned trilogy. The ending leaves you eager for more, but not a hard cliffy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI stumbled upon this by accident and it turned out to be a real page turner with a fascinating world, unlike anything I have read before. The world building is well done with fascinating descriptions, but I would have liked to have seen deeper character development. Often times the conversations were stilted or confusing and it made it challenging to become invested in any of the characters. Still, the story itself is refreshingly unique. I'm definitely to check out the second book to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021Format: PaperbackA strong three and a half
I find this hard to rate because honestly it’s good, interesting even but just at times the characters felt juvenile. For example Ada is confronting the Queen who is human and supposedly over a thousand years old but there are just no explanations given to Ada. Ada just keeps stumbling around and I wanted her to demand answers but everyone was just too nice . Ok yes there’s someone sinister lurking about and yes there’s a personality clash along the way which is clearly meant to indicate chemistry but I wanted to gnash my teeth. This is the first book in this series and well pretty tame although I think perhaps as Ada is sexually attracted to several guys that might soon change. An interesting idea that for this reader just needed less mystery and more upfront information.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

5.0 out of 5 stars A very intriguing start.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was the 1st book I have read by this author and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it only because of the synopsis and others reviews. But as I began to read I quickly found that there was more to this book than what I 1st thought, it was very interesting and really drew me in. The writing style was very well written and easy to follow and I really enjoyed the characters of Ada and the men. This book has given me a mystery that I need to find so I will be moving on to the next one quickly to find out to find out why Ada was brought to the island to the island and what is her purpose And also to see if she's gonna get with some of those very hot native men.
