"Here the epistolary courtship drama of Austen-inspired romances meets the full-bodied magic and worldbuilding of Susanna Clarke..." -BookLife

Once thread, heartstrings make Fate's best instruments.
In an attempt to repel an unwanted suitor, Lady Lysbeth Haywood shares her unfashionable enthusiasm for the "Faye"—a supposedly-mythical race few believe exist. Instead, her suitor is driven to capture one as a gift.

When the Faye, Evyn, is delivered to Lindenholt Manor, Lysbeth's dread at the prospect of a forced engagement yields to the thrilling actualization of childhood Fayetales—and the chance to satisfy her long-suffered curiosity. Unfortunately, Avonleigh society is less receptive to the strange arrival.

Maligned, mistreated, and forced into servitude, Evyn's traumatized silence spurs Lysbeth to his aid. Trust and affection emerge slowly, and as extraordinary Faye mysteries are peeled away, their revelations—and Lysbeth's own role in them—reach farther than she ever thought possible.

The plot is simple: forbidden love. The story was highly engaging despite being rather slow-paced and having barely any action. The book hinges on the characters and the intimate moments—both of which are expertly crafted.

There are surprising twists and a mysterious undercurrent of the Faye’s culture. The slow reveal drew me in and had me holding my breath in many spots.

There is an element of rising dread as the story unravels that kept me on edge, especially in the latter parts.

I fell in love with Lysbeth, Erruwyn, Elane, Avrella, and Jacques. I liked all the characters, but those five, in particular, stood out strongly.

Lysbeth was a truly complex character. She was nurturing and caring, but also oblivious at times because of her position in life and the status she was born into. She was often aware that things were quite different for others, but there were times when that thought didn’t occur to her. It made her feel real.

Erruwyn was soft and kind, and at first, he seemed too much so. But as more of his culture was revealed, more of his personality and his way made sense. I came to really endear him and wanted to see him happy.

Jacques was an absolute delight. He really livens up the book when he’s around. He was one of the most memorable characters. He’s charming and witty while being a nuisance that should be annoying—but he’s just so affable and contrarian that it made him oddly relatable.

Elane was often the source of comfort and the ground for reality. She felt like an old friend who could always be counted on.

Avrella, at first, seemed like she was going to be insufferable and pompous. I was quite glad that wasn’t the case. She was wise and loving and felt like someone who had experienced nearly all that life had to offer—and she had learned from it.

Isaac was a maniacal bastard, and I hated every word he uttered. The author succeeded greatly there.

I loved this book. The story is simple on the surface, but richly layered and complex. The relationships built in the book are captivating, and the Faye culture was insanely intriguing.

The author found a clever and unique way to structure this book and that certainly worked to its advantage. I can’t stress how much I really did enjoy this story.

I am a slow reader and have not read much fiction lately, even though I used to devour it in my earlier years. Reading Strung and diving into its universe has been such a treat; Every time I open its pages, I am transported. The world is so vivid and the characters are so well fleshed out — it feels like I am truly getting to know each one (and therefore fall in love with, roll my eyes at, adamantly despise, or perk up when I find out they’re in a scene). The artwork is beautiful, grounding the feel of the world and its characters even more-so. I feel like I’m in the rooms with them, full scenes playing out in front of me. I particularly appreciate how truthfully the complexities of emotions and aftermath of traumas are portrayed. At times I find myself pausing to allow myself feel the shock, anger, and/or anguish alongside our beloved characters (Lysbeth and Evyn in particular). I am still only a few chapters in and, even at my slow pace, I am enthralled. I cannot wait to see where Roske takes me next — what all mysteries about the Faye are going to be uncovered and how is that going to be handled in Lysbeth’s world?! What is going to happen with our Evyn?? Who else will I get to meet?? Where is this journey going to go?!

TL;DR — Strung is a beautifully constructed page turner that transports you into a dynamic and fully fleshed out world that even slow paced readers can enjoy and feel continuously engaged in

Strung by Roske is a different kind of romance novel. To me, it is more like a musical. The author's writing style is unique. You will be captivated and anxious to see what happens next.

There are so many twists that one moment you are heartbroken and ready to shed a few tears and then suddenly you find yourself laughing.

A book with a difference, and one that is also well written.

Strung by Roske is a standalone novel. Going in, I didn't know what to expect. I knew that some things compared to Austen could be great but some could be clunky and poorly done. I found this one to be a good idea, but one that I found very hard to get through. A fae man is kidnapped and given as a gift to a woman who is obsessed with all things Fae related. However, I am dyslexic and reading some of the sentences with different characters around names and new words was difficult for me. Things such as "Forces of ⊩K̫o̫n̮o̫k̫ displace the string. ⦕D̮a̫n̮e͚s̮e̫⦖ amplifies, brings the string to wave—to vibrate—as far as can be; brings the string to resonance of ᠀T̮h͚e̫a͚m̮," were ones that I struggled through. I would have enjoyed it more I think without the fancy characters added in. I can understand creating a language, but this one was very hard to read.

Strung is an incredible and unique book, one that I highly recommend. A romance that elegantly blends fantasy with works such as Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, I truly feel as if Strung has something for every kind of reader. It's fantasy with emotion and depth, which is something I personally love to see; the characters are well-developed and memorable, the worldbuilding is exquisite, and the writing itself is beautiful. Strung touches on some powerful themes regarding gender roles, cultural relativity, and how society can enable and empower cruelty throughout the book, making the reading as though-provoking as it is engaging. Overall, I highly recommend this book for those who love fantasy, classical literature, or romance, and especially for those who love all three.
