Suddenly Susan (Susan Wade Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 799 ratings

To land her dream job, Susan’s only missing two things: experience and any sense of style.

Unremarkable might as well be Susan Wade’s middle name. Sure, her grades are fine, and her all-night diner job has taught her how to work hard, but it takes a lot more than a perky smile and dated suit to impress corporate America.

Broke and soon to be homeless, she faces the unappealing options of following her semi-boyfriend to the bowels of Texas or squatting in her parents’ basement, until she gets help from the unlikeliest of sources.

A refreshingly funny, supremely optimistic rite of passage story, rife with psychotic roommates, questionable fashion choices, and an epic search for the perfect cup of coffee

From the Author

One of the greatest fears modern women face is the fear of failure: failure at work, in our relationships, and as parents. Susan Wade harbors the same fears so many of us do. Though The Susan Wade Saga is told with a heavy dose of humor, I hope you'll celebrate Susan's successes, mourn her failures, and shake your head at her poor decision-making. But above all else, I hope you'll come away smiling!

Bestselling Author Virginia Gray looks for humor in every situation. A graduate of Wake Forest University, she spent part one of her career as a college professor. But after years of research, eighty-hour work weeks, and generally trying to take over the world, she stepped away from academics to pursue her love of writing. And because no task is more daunting than making sense of the senseless male psyche, her stories always explode from the glorious mouth of chaos. (You're welcome.) Until she packs her bags and moves to the beach, she lives in the Midwest with her wonderful family and far too many pets.

This book is well written, smooth flowing and easy to read. It is a quick read. The characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through are depicted extremely well.

The main character of the book is Susan Wade. Susan was born and raised in North Carolina. As soon as she graduates college she is off to bigger and better things. She despises everything about the south and is determined to put as much distance between her and the south as possible. She accepts a partial scholarship to a college in Chicago, IL. She is determined to work her butt off to make good grades and do what is necessary to get the kind of job she has always dreamed about. Double majoring and working full time doesn't leave much time for fun, but it is a sacrifice she is willing to make. Will all of her hard work pay off? Will she be able to get her dream job, or any job, fresh out of college?

I really enjoyed this book. Susan's personality, attitudeand snarky comments kept me reading wanting to see what would happen next. I laughed, giggled, held my breath, and felt so many different emotions while reading the book. After being in a bit of a reading slump it was exactly what I needed.

I look forward to reading The Carrot to find out how the story will continue.

This was a story about a young girl in college that knew what she wanted and didn't take no for an answer. This story was well written and easy to follow. The characters were all believable and interacted well with each other. I did find it a little irritating that she did not want a boyfriend, but kept "dating" him. She pushed him away so many times, then got upset that he found a girlfriend and broke up with her. Other than that, this was a very enjoyable book and I will be reading the rest of the series.

This short novella introduces this series about Susan. It seems like the entire saga will be spread over the 3 volumes. While this could stand alone, it leads into the next book. It is not sweet or clean, but it isn't graphic or over the top, either. There is significant foul language and bits of sex. There are some cute spots of humor, some enough to laugh out loud. For the most part, it is a well written pile of shallow, self-absorbed pap that could have been written in the late eighties. It is about striving for that education that will let you strive for that job that will enable you to claw your way up the corporate ladder and prostitute yourself to greed. Oh, boy! I received this book for free and it was worth every penny. This is my honest review.

This story was neither funny nor romantic. The guy the h is dating in college dumps her at the end of the story. They are graduating and she accepted a job in a different state from where his job will be located. He spends the night with another woman after he finds out about the h's new job and then ask the h if they can still be friends.

The h appears to be successful and climbing the corporate ladder five years later. The book ends with the h spending time with a man who can further her career and he tells her that his place is close by. She leaves with him leading me to believe she may gain a few rungs on the ladder working on her back. Her career continues into the next book.

    Not my cup of tea.

Virginia Gray is a great writer. 'The Interview' had me so hooked that I read it from start to finish in one sitting. The plot flows perfectly. Love the characters and the dialogue between them that keeps you laughing almost non-stop. The main character, Susan Wade, somehow gets it together even with the bumbling events that take place as she strives for an interview with a top company. Susan's interactions with her roommate and with an unlucky barrister at a coffee shop are priceless, so funny and witty. You will find 'The Interview' positively entertaining, as is Virginia's other book which is 'The Carrot', a continuation of Susan Wade's adventures as she navigates the corporate world. I once said 'The Carrot' is one of the best books I have read this year, and will say the same about 'The Interview'. Whether the reader is male or female, 'The Interview' and 'The Carrot' are a total joy to read.

Susan Wade is finding out how hard it is to make it in a career field after college she isnt having much luck and shes down to her last five dollars. She can either run a diner in her home town or go to Texas with her boyfriend. Its a funny tale about being in your 20s and trying to make a career out of things and the people that you meet and the freindships you make as well as love life that come with it.

I liked this story for the most part, but I found Susan to be immature and I didn't think the story was funny. I'm going to read the next story in the series to see if I like her any better. This story is a continuation so you won't find out what happens until you read another book.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

After reading and thoroughly enjoying “The Carrot,” I wanted more of Susan Wade—her wit, her sarcasm, and especially her motivators. “The Interview” did not disappoint. I laughed out loud so many times as Susan, a college senior, traversed the precarious world of job interviews, jealous co-eds, and hurt feelings while she searched for her dream job. The family and social influences along the way drew me into Susan’s world even more and lent a level of compassion for Ms. Wade. The author does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life through descriptive details and situations to which the reader can easily relate. I love a story that can make me laugh, and just thinking about this one puts a smile on my face. It’s difficult not to get hooked on this saga, and I can’t wait for book three!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you enoyed 'The Carrot' you will love this prequel.

Having been introduced to Susan Wade in Virginia Gray's debut novel, 'The Carrot', it was a pleasure to be drawn once again into the world of her sharp, ambitious, vulnerable heroine.
'The Interview' finds Susan working part time in a burger joint, about to graduate from university, but with little prospect of a career in the business world. The options of returning home are as appealing as following her "romantically challenged semi-boyfriend" to Texas.
Can she gain that all-important interview: the golden ticket to the corporate ladder?
Virginia Gray's writing is as rich and as well-observed as ever, peppered with wonderful trademark passages such as:-
"Dallas sprawled like a giant platter of spaghetti; an endless stretch of buildings and suburbia. Rather than one giant headquarters downtown, ComTech’s offices were broken into divisions, strewn like tiny meatballs across the city."
This thoroughly enjoyable prequel was like meeting up with an old friend and instantly being drawn once again into her richly chaotic, highly entertaining World.
Anyone who enjoyed 'The Carrot' will relish this.

    Suddenly Susan by Virginia Gray
Susan Wade we met in Caught Up In Me by Virginia Gray where she was transferred back to South Carolina where she had grown up. Susan hated everyone and everything about the South and growing up there. She always loved the water though.
Well this book tells us more about Susan’s life and the architect she fell in love with. As well as Mona her caring assistant who has become her best friend and embraces all things Southern. This story of Susan and her Pete is delicious in all its details, twists, turns and lessons on friendship, love and loyalty.
It is a ‘must’ for readers of Caught Up In Me by Virginia Gray. I bought this book. My review is entirely my own after sheer enjoyment of my read.

Susan is a self absorbed completely unlikable college student and honestly I was tempted to stop reading a few times however at the end I can see the author was setting us up for more of a story where Susan as an unlikeable person will transform into a nice person and possibly end up with Ben.

I read this book after reading The Carrot and absolutely loving it, and was not disappointed at all. It is refreshingly witty and superbly optimistic, and I think my appreciation for The Interview was actually heightened by having read The Carrot first. This short novel is a delightful precursor to the meatier second book, and the perfect introduction to the ever-hilarious Susan Wade. A must-read.
