The Summer Queen Paperback – May 30, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
The Summer Queen is an evocative and grand historical novel from Margaret Pemberton, the bestselling author of A Season of Secrets and Beneath the Cypress Tree.
August 1879, Osborne House. Queen Victoria has occupied the British throne for over forty years. Bringing together her extended family from across Europe offers a chance for old alliances to be strengthened and new unions to be forged.
May Teck, daughter of a Duke and Princess, is constantly reminded that she lacks the pedigree to be a true royal. Considering herself an outsider, she finds comfort in meeting two kindred spirits at Osborne; creating a bond with them that she thinks will last forever.
Alicky lives in the shadow of her older siblings and has never recovered from the death of her mother. Until she meets Nicky, heir to the Russian throne, who sweeps her off to his homeland where life will never be the same again.
And then there is Willy, destined to be the future Kaiser of Germany. Suffering from a birth defect, he’s always kept his true feelings locked away and all the world sees is the bombastic persona he projects. As shifting forces of power send warning ripples across Europe, an unavoidable war looms on the horizon . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent insite into the influence that Queen Victoria had on her family.
I thought that the book was a bit slow at the beginning. However, I am glad I kept going. It was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. So much so, that I have purchased another book by the same author. I haven’t had time to read it yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading
Loved this book, I have read a lot of Margaret Pemberton's books. I like historical novels based on fact and this one really fitted the description. As a language teacher I sometimes feel that if students had to read this type of book their interest in history would be much greater than by just studying a lot of dates and facts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed opinion
I wasn't sure about this book to begin with but I persevered and I did eventually enjoy it but it's not one I could read over again. The amount of family members featured in the book is huge and I found it quite difficult to keep track of who was who. Another reviewer has mentioned a fmaily tree in the paperback edition. I honestly can't remember if there is one in the Kindle edition but it would have meant having to constantly go back and forth. If you are going to read this, I would suggest looking up Queen Victoria's descendants before beginning.
I always think of Queen Mary as a very stern elderly lady so it was hard to picture her as the young, attractive woman in the story. Also, the kindred spirit relationship between May, Alicky and Kaiser Wilhelm is hard to believe. There is no author's historical note at the end so I have no idea if this is complete fiction or based loosely on fact. More research for me ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I have read this book before and wanted to keep it but it was given to a charity . Service was excellent as usual and once I have painted my fence I can admire it while I enjoy a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for background on Queen Mary.
Loved this book about Queen Mary and her contemporaries. I didn’t know much about her but have gone on to read more. Was sorry when it ended.
