The Summoner's Sins (Sandal Castle Medieval Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition
The kingdom is rife with treachery and darkness…
1323, Yorkshire, England
After negotiating with rebels without the King’s permission, Andrew Harclay, Earl of Carlisle has been executed as a traitor.
With his last breaths, he was heard to curse all who had a hand in his demise – including King Edward II. When the royal executioner, Perkin Cratwell, is found dead in Pontefract soon after, there are rumours that Harclay’s curse is coming true.
Believing that Perkin’s death was the work of rebel plotters, King Edward sends Sir Richard Lee, Circuit Judge of the Northern Realm, to investigate. But when more and more brutal deaths occur around Pontefract, fear of the curse continues to spread through the land.
Suspecting that the deaths are connected, Richard searches for a missing link.
But with dark forces closing in on him at every turn, he must tread carefully to avoid meeting the same grisly fate…

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021In these troubled times, it is a relief to escape into Fourteenth Century England. But this is a tale of corruption, dark superstition, fear and ignorance, all of which must be navigated by the circuit judge Sir Richard Lee as he attempts to solve a string of mysterious murders.
The citizens believe Hesse murders are linked to a curse pronounced by a nobleman who was executed for treason by the king. Sir Richard suspects something more worldly is behind the gruesome deaths.
As Sir Richard pursues his investigation, he meets many characters from all walks of life - the author brings them to life with sharply-drawn characterizations and authentic details. As you read this novel, the medieval period comes to life with all of its sights, its customs and yes, its smells. The author does such a good job you feel you are really there, from the banquet halls of the nobility to the cave of a hermit, to the village tavern.
Parallel to Sir Richard’s investigation, there are chapters about the life of the summoner, who drags “sinners” into ecclesiastical court and who hears much about the secrets of the area. These two threads come together in an interesting way.
The only criticism I have of this enjoyable novel, and it is a minor one, is that it is full of medieval terminology which may be unfamiliar to most readers, but this in no way impedes the flow of the story. I am grateful that there is no attempt to reproduce local dialect, which sometimes makes historical novels unreadable.
This story is an exciting adventure all the way through,
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021I !like historical novels where right beats might. Good characters and nice balance of dialogue and story action. Pleasant read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021The author does a tremendous job transporting the reader back to Medieval England. Not only does he liberally weave period terms into the narrative, he vividly describes the sights and smells that people of the era encountered in their towns and villages. The author further enhances his story by successfully integrating into it the political issues of the day. The author's medical background shows in his comprehensive description of the diseases that plague the characters who people this convoluted mystery. This book is simply one of the best of this genre.
The author has created characters we care about and a protagonist who, while having some ordinary human foibles, is believable and sympathetic. The book's one weak point is in the solution to the murders that are committed in it. Without giving away the ending, it's sufficient to say that the extensiveness of the plot somewhat strains credulity. That, however, is a minor point in a book that provides a solid story and an engrossing trip back in time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2021Within one year two men have been brutally executed for treason against King Edward II of England. The spirit of the first has performed miracles according to the common folk, while the second has uttered a curse against those who betrayed him. It's 1323, Yorkshire and Sir Richard Lee, circuit judge, has been sent by the king to investigate the supposed miracles and untimely deaths that have occurred.
In the course of his investigations Sir Richard performs rudimentary autopsies of possible murder victims, stops the doctor-ordered bleeding of a patient which is killing, not curing him and holds court proceedings examining various suspicious deaths.
The best part of The Summoners Sins by Keith Moray is the depiction of daily life at the time. We see how people lived, what they ate, wore, and believed, and the hold that religion and superstition had on their lives. The author has done rigorous research, and the characters and their lives are presented honestly. Sir Richard's final solution to the crimes seemed to me to be hurried and less well planned than the rest of the book. I received an advance e-copy from Sapere Books and am voluntarily reviewing it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2021Always a pleasure to read Keith Moray I love a good mystery especially a medieval English mystery with history an fantasy thrown in. Richard an Hubert have there hands full in this tale. With treason, curses, poison an necromancy. Along with a whole town in a uproar with Saints, miracles an murder. Richard has to figure out the who don it before more are murdered.
Outstanding read. Damn fine work KUDOS to Keith Moray.

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy read
For a historical novel it was an easy read read although I did have to flick back a couple of times to familiarise myself with the names.
Suitably foul characters described in gory detail but also realistic likeable heros. Most enjoyable, now on to book 3.
