The Alpha and His King (Kincaid Pack Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3,279 ratings

When Kai flies out of a shed, swinging a rake, Rick’s life flips upside down.

As alpha, Rick’s dedication to his pack has never wavered—until Kai. The pull he feels toward the younger man is more than a simple distraction, but Rick won’t let himself lose focus. Not while a hidden enemy is drawing near.

Moving in with the grumpy alpha who saved him is a big change for Kai, and it isn’t long before he begins to ache for something he can’t have. As a half-human shifter responsible for his three younger siblings, he knows he can never be Rick’s mate.

Pushing aside their doubts and insecurities, they grow closer. But when the pack’s enemies strike, bringing their fears to fruition, Rick and Kai have to decide if they’re willing to risk it all to be together.

The Alpha and His King is the first book in the Kincaid Pack series, best read in order. It features a quick-tempered and possessive alpha; a sweet and feisty alpha-mate; shifters, seers, and witches galore; massive amounts of hurt/comfort; and a happily ever after.

Wonderful series intro

Wonderful series intro
This was my first experience with Kiki Clark and Kirt Graves and I really enjoyed it. Clark has created a really unique world here – shifters but without the typical fated mates aspect, though it’s definitely instant attraction. While each book in the series follows the relationship of a couple giving them an HEA, there’s also a series story arc that runs throughout the books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order. There’s a lot of world building going on but Clark does a good job of keeping it interesting and I didn’t feel like the pace was affected by it. While Rick & Kai are wolf- shifters – the Kincaid Pack is made up of various animals as well as seers and witches. I’m a fan of books with kids in them and while not exactly a “single dad” trope – Kai’s responsibility for his younger siblings definitely brings all of those feels to the story. I also like that the kids are not just convenient props, Clark has made them an integral and believable aspect. There are some heavy elements in here such as abuse, violence, and some relationship angst. Tempered by a little bit of humor and new found family. I love the secondary characters as much as the main couple. While Rick and Kai get their HFN, the mystery surrounding attacks on the pack are just revealing themselves to be larger than anyone thinks. I’m definitely looking forward to Keiran & Bennett’s book, The Second and His Bonded.Narration:This is my first time listening to a narration by Kirt Graves and I’m absolutely in love with his style and voices. There are a LOT of characters in this book and Graves gives them all unique voices and personalities. My favorite part is that he performs each chapter in a voice corresponding to that character which makes it easy to keep track of perspective. He’s definitely being added to my “find more!” list of narrators.

This book starts off as a bit of a slow burn, which is truly perfect for Kai and his siblings. After all of the trauma they experienced, watching them blossom, grow, and heal in the Kincaid pack was absolutely delightful. My heart hurt for them so many times, but each one of them was so full of fire and fight. Not only seeing them find their way out of the trauma, but seeing Kai and Rick bond was so very sweet. Rick may have a temper, but seeing him temper himself to care and love the King children was so wonderful. I absolutely loved the whole pack dynamic throughout this book and the care everyone showed for one another.

I do think at times this book dragged a little. I think the slow pacing was appropriate for the most part, but I did get a bit antsy at the end there. I also wish that the mental health was focused on a bit more, as that would have been a nice and healthy element for a book that held this kind of trauma. Overall, though, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and I feel like it is an interesting lead up into the rest of the series. I can't wait!!!

Parts of this book I loved. It was obviously well written with an engaging plot, establishing the series, and great side characters. I will definitely be reading the next book right after, so you know that means it was good. I also like Kai and Rick as people..that said, one thing about them as a couple bothered me. It's more a fundamental thing with "mates" that's just my opinion, but I like when there's a fated element, where the couple knows it is destiny. Or, at least for there to be more details on what being mates means in their culture. There were some hints in the beginning like them being drawn to eachother...but no more details on a fated element were supplied. There were even pieces that seemed contradictory to that. I suppose the hints at it being fated without any more on the matter confused me. I feel like it should be all or nothing, but the constant "claiming" then separation and denial seemed to be a flaw in their chemistry together. Just seemed off slightly? Anyways, that's the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, it's a great read.

I loved this book so much!! About half way through I looked up more about the author and was shocked to see this is a first book. This book is written so well that truly surprised me. The plot and character development is great! I loved the MCs and I want to get to know the supporting characters as well. I just love Kai and his love for his siblings. Also the fact that this story actually has a storyline other than a shifter mating is just wonderful. I just loved it and just added book 2 to my library so the journey continues. (Also I ended up purchasing the audiobook part way through because I couldn’t put book down and well had a bunch of stuff to do. The audio is wonderfully narrated)

Alpha Kincaid and Kai’s really represent all the twists and turns in all of our lives… but to the 10th power! When it comes down to it we all want to be loved and accepted right where we are… add in 3 siblings, abusive parents out to kill, and exploding houses that are within a protected area… and you know something sinister is brewing… will Kai and Rick get their HEA before they get killed… of course they will, it’s Kiki Clark and she always delivers!

What an explosive start to a series! I don't want to give spoilers, so all I will say is that Kai and Rick fight hard for their HEA. The found family in this book is beautiful, and the struggles the King siblings go through is handled wonderfully. This book has heat, heart, some angst, a villain to hate, some sexy shifter biology, and a wonderful HEA.

I read the free prequel to this series, which focused on Victor and Cole. I thought it was a pretty good setup for the series although I did find the writing a bit stiff and repetitive. While the editing issues that plagued A New Pack for the New Year appear to have been resolved, I still found the same stiffness and repetitiveness. I was getting sick of the statement that Kai never felt more safe or more cared for. And yet he continued to fight his feelings for Rick and fed into the false assumptions in his head. This storyline, which I think is very good, tries to make Rick out to be this super tough yet benevolent and progressive alpha, but he really is kind of as rigid as his Enforcer, Marcus. That, combined with Kai’s demons causes their budding romance to be dragged all the way through the story before finally happening.
I’ve read other stories by this author outside of the Kincaid Pack series and generally like her writing style. I’m having a little trouble warming up to it for this series. As I mentioned, I do think the storyline is good and I like most of the characters (V gets on my nerves), so I will likeley continue through this series. Next up is Bennett, one of my favorite characters.

The world building Kiki does is amazing and what I love most is that I really need to hug al of her characters.
As the first book in the saga, there is a lot of plot as it is necessary to lay the groundwork for the whole story but it doesn't get heavy at all and leaves us wanting to know more.
The relationship between Rick and Kai is beautiful and super enjoyable to read. If you are looking for something different, I highly recommend it.
Each book is self-conclusive in the couple but there is a story that unites the whole saga.

And when I saw the paperback come up on sale, I grabbed it. It's the first I've read by this author, and shifter stories aren't my jam typically but this was a unique take on it. I like the overall arc that seems that it'll be continuing in the next story, not as a cliffhanger to the relationship, but just for the characters altogether. It is a full cast of side characters and friends who will presumably all get stories later on. I enjoyed it. There was some heavy topics, and some deep angst in parts, very real but also very emotional in parts. Loved the growth of the romance between the MCs and the HEA in the end. Was a well written book, and I look forward to more in this series. Will definitely look for more by this author in the future as well.

WOW, this book caught me by surprise... The captivating plot got me glued to the book since the beginning until the very end with the variety of topics happening at once, pack politics, shifters, seers and witches,  betrayal, intrigue, secrets and danger, in between a love story, 2 mates finding each other, loyalty, kindness and of course many hot scenes. I am trying strongly to not spoil anything for you so I am just adding that this book Is simply an amazing reading. I can't wait to read book 2!
