The Empty Jar Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 676 ratings

Three months touring Europe.
Romantic. Dazzling. Unforgettable.
The trip of a lifetime.

But some lifetimes are shorter…

We couldn’t have known it would work out this way. No one could. No one could’ve guessed that something so beautiful could be so tragic.

But it is tragic.
Yet so, so beautiful.

That’s what sacrifice is—beauty and tragedy.
It’s pain and suffering for something or someone you love.

And this is the ultimate sacrifice.
One stunning act of true love.

This is our story.
Our true love story.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

This book is not a romantic fairy tale. Yet, it’s the most romantic story I’ve ever told. It’s a journey of pain and loss, of hope and happiness. It’s both achingly tragic and exquisitely beautiful. It’s a love story. A true love story about real love. The kind that sees you through the night and holds you when you cry. The kind that won't give up and never lets go. The kind we all dream about and few find. But it’s real. I promise you, it’s real. I’ve seen this kind of love, and I've seen this kind of heartbreak. I got to see it up close and personal, and quite honestly, I will never be the same. I hope it changes you as much as it changed me.

Cathartic. Beautiful. Poignant.

Cathartic. Beautiful. Poignant.
I knew before I read 'The Empty Jar', that it was going to be difficult to read. I knew it wasn't going to just cause tears, but it would cause ugly tears. What I didn't expect was the beauty within its pages, nor the healing to be found, nor the laughter that would flow freely. Knowing the circumstances driving the writing of this book, I was afraid it might be more than I could handle. You see, my father lived with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia for 16 years, and died on July 13, 2013, six months after being diagnosed with lung, liver and stomach cancer. I usually avoid books which deal with cancer now. So, this book was a leap of faith for me. But, I had a feeling this one would be different. Because Leighton was coming at this from MY perspective. From someone who watched their loved one suffer. From someone who felt that ache, that pain, that anguish of not being able to do anything ... that helpless feeling. The most beautiful thing happened. She put all of that love and all of those fears, and all of the “what ifs” and “what nows”, into the most amazing and beautiful love story. It will make you cry. It will make you smile. It will make you laugh. But above all, it will make you realize, that when you find true love, you have to cherish it, you have to cultivate it, you have to nurture it. A "non-traditional HEA", 'The Empty Jar' is a story that will remain with me for years to come. A story of sacrifice, and of true love, it is breathtakingly beautiful. An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review and did not influence my opinion of the book.

WARNING: This is another ugly cry book. Have your tissues ready.

I've never read anything by M. Leighton before. WHY have I never read anything from M. Leighton before? This was breathtakingly beautiful.

After Lena receives bad news concerning her health, her and her husband, Nate, decide to spend 3 months in Europe. In this time Lena is faced with making some tough decisions. I don't want to give you too much of the back story because it would ruin it, but I will say that M. Leighton takes us on one of the biggest emotional roller coasters of all time.

Oh geez. I seriously cried just reading the dedication at the beginning. That wasn't even a part of this story and I'm already tearing up. I knew then that this was going to be an epic story.

This story was magical! A love so strong between two incredible people who have come face to face with the worst news anyone could ever get.

This was about having hope & believing. We don't always understand why bad things happen to us and we often find ourselves questioning our faith. I saw that with Lena and I knew exactly how she felt because I myself have done the same thing.

    Brave
    Courageous
    Inspiring
    Selfless
    Compassionate
    Strong
I could think of many many more to go along with the above list to describe Lena. She was a badass heroine in my eyes. She was going through hell and she was more worried about her family. She got bad news, the worst news a person could get and had to make some of the hardest choices. I could feel her pain. It was as if I was right there making decisions with her. Seeing things through her eyes. Feeling every emotion with her.

Nate was the most amazing husband. I felt his pain and heartache just as much too. To have to sit there and watch your significant other wither away and there's nothing you can do about it is heartbreaking. You wish you could take the pain away but you can't. You wish it was you instead of them but it's not. It was gut-wrenching reading Nate's thoughts.

Lena and Nate's relationship was beautiful. Always, always there for one another. They tried keeping their emotions in check while they were together. Never wanting the other to be sad. Their love was magical. If you're lucky enough to find a love like that in your lifetime then you are the luckiest person on earth! My heart broke for both of them.

Now...Nissa, the best friend, I loved her. Coming over and dancing to the FRIENDS theme song...seriously the best! We all need a best friend like her. She was great!

Leighton took us on a heartwarming journey. We were up front and center as Lena and Nate we're dealing with this tragedy that was thrown their way. I couldn't have been more proud of Lena. She was one of the strongest heroines I've ever read. And Nate. Nate was just so understanding in everything Lena decided. He never made her do anything she didn't want. He trusted her decisions and after everything was said and done, he was dedicated to his family. He did everything he promised. He's one hell of a man!

This, at times, was agonizing and painful to get through. But it's real and tragic and it hit me hard. Sometimes we read books that are funny and light-hearted and sometimes we come across books that make us feel like we've never felt before. They remind you of things you've gone through in your own life. They are stories we take with us forever and this is one story I will never forget. Lena and Nate will always hold a special place in my heart.

I have to say that this is going to be one of my top favorite books of all time. I'm so happy M. Leighton wrote this and I came across it. The writing was flawless and beautiful. This story is worth it! So if you haven't read it yet then I highly suggest it.

When I first purchased this book, I had to set it down after reading only a few paragraphs into the first chapter. I knew that it was going to touch me on a deep emotional level that I felt I needed to dedicate time to it. I knew I would need time to cry and time to grieve and just time to enjoy the mastery of this book. The fact that I began and finished it on Memorial Day could not be more fitting.

Anybody who has experienced love and loss and the combined highs and lows of these experiences should read this book. Michelle captured so perfectly the deep gnawing aches of pain and loss - especially a loss like losing a loved one to a terminal illness or the loss of losing love and trying to go on without a core piece of your soul and spirit! She also captured and expressed an inside look to true love and the type of love that transcends life. In sickness and in health - these marriage vows could not have been more accurately conveyed as they were in this heartbreaking love story.

I don't think there was a part in this book that I wasn't emotionally invested and - on the verge of - if not continuously weeping. This book made the losses I have experienced come to forefront and was like ripping some old scabs open. Yet it was also renewing in its faith. I can remember at a young age when I felt my faith was buried under grief and the unfairness of life's obstacles. I can relate to how Lena felt anger at a God that would take so much from someone that they felt they would break under the pressure. I also can relate to the moment when she had her confession and she accepted Him back into her life and was absolutely stripped down to her soul.

I have so much in my life to be thankful for that I see His blessings every day that I get to spend with my three children. At almost 40, I may not have been able or yet had the opportunity to experience a romantic love like the characters in this book but it does give me joy, hope, and peace to hear that others have been blessed in this way. I can only pray that maybe one day I will meet my soulmate and until then take absolute solace that I am able to experience all the wonders of being a single mom. And perhaps hope that my children will have better luck in love when they live their futures out.

Lastly, my heart goes out to Michelle for the loss of her father to cancer. As the disease has robbed me of a great grandmother, a grandmother and grand father, and two wonderful uncles and has caused pain and suffering to a cousin, I have seen firsthand how very difficult it can be to watch a loved one wither away and go through such pain and suffering day by day. I have also lost a brother at a young age so this book just shows how we have so much in common with others who experience love and loss.

I thank Michelle for sharing this deeply personal story and know that her father is most definitely proud of her and of the way her stories bring strong connections and emotions to her readers. She is definitely blessed with the gift of storytelling and could not have found a better way to keep his memory alive through the hearts and tears of her readers! Thank you so much for sharing and remember to hug close the ones we have because we never know how long it may be before we will join them again in the next journey.

Holy smokes! Um, wow...I don't think I even have proper words to review this and actually give it justice. I've read a few sad books in the recent past, but nothing pulled as many emotions from me as this one did. There was beauty in the tragedy though. Beauty beyond description.

This book was nothing short of spectacular. Just truly and honestly amazing.

I just...I don't know how I'm going to even begin to review this book...

Okay, I'm not going to reveal any of the plot but I am going to try and tell you how this book made me feel.

If you only read one book this year, if you've never read an M. Leighton book before, then let it be this. 5 stars is no where near enough for the The Empty Jar, it isn't a must read but a HAVE to read!

This has to be THE most powerful, emotional and personal book M. Leighton has EVER written. It is the BEST she's ever written and that's saying something as I adore all that I've read of hers. It is also right up there at the top as one of the best books I've EVER read, which takes some beating!!!

Nate and Lena's story has ripped me to shreds, made my throat hurt so much and my eyes sting with crying so much. No, not crying, sobbing, out loud. More than once I had to stop reading as I couldn't see for tears. I had a huge headache afterwards. It tore my heart out and stamped all over it. It has left a lasting impression on me and will stay in my heart for ever.

Even without the author's note to the readers at the end you just know how personal this book is to her. You can feel her love, her pain, her heart in every word, every line, every page of the book.

The Empty Jar is THE most saddest and, yet, most romantic story I have ever read. It's such a powerful and compelling read that, as you turn each page you just HAVE to keep reading even though you know it will leave you destroyed. And I was. Totally destroyed!

    So what's this book about?
Well, as I said at the top of my review, I'm not going to reveal the plot (it's so hard to do without giving away spoilers) but I will tell you it's about one person's selfless act of love, their determination and courage and what they're willing to do for those they love.
It's about survival. It's about hope and faith.
It's about life. It's about sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice.
Above all, it's about love. Bone-deep, absolute unconditional love. It's the ultimate love story.
It broke my heart into a million pieces but it also warmed it to the very core too. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Go 1-click this beautiful story NOW but make sure you stock up on plenty tissues for the snot and tears that's bound to flow, plenty painkillers for the headache that will almost surely follow from the amount of crying you do and last, but not least, HUGE amounts of alcohol to get you through the book hangover that is inevitable.

Review I am a huge fan of this author but this book just took my fangirl to a whole new level...

This book is just one of those books that will hold a piece of your heart forever...The writing is just exquisite and the depth of character that was put into Nate and Lena was phenomenal and their interactions were real and it was like reading a true story.

"We share the kind of love that picks you up when you stumble, the kind of love that catches you when you fall, the kind of love that rescues you when you need saving. The real kind of love. "

I am in awe of Lena's journey and the way she made her choices, her strength and dignity was heartwrenching yet inspiring to read, I felt all of her pain and happiness throughout the book. Michelle really nailed Lena's character and I was glued to my kindle throughout.

"If I could bottle that look, I would. I would eat it, drink it bathe in it. I’d breathe it in through my pores, draw it into my cells. I’d soak it up until it became a part of me, an inextricable part of me. I’d drown in it until I could feel it with every breath I took. Until I couldn’t see or hear or feel anything else. That’s how much I love that look."

Although this wasn't an easy book to read, the subject matter is sad but it really highlights true love and sacrifice and it will evoke feelings that are alien {it did to me} and make you look at your own life and take stock of what you have, I had my own personal reasons to why this story touched me but all I can say is this, I'm so glad I read this book, it is one of my top reads ever, not because it was a tearjerker, plainly because I felt like I was in this story, the writing was just captivating and meaningful and completely from the heart.

Thank you M. Leighton for an amazing book
