A car crash, an old suitcase and a dark secret leads to a story of arson and murder.

Simon Reece's journey through this dystopian crime thriller, searching to find his identity, draws him into a world of lies, danger and murder. This is a world controlled by evil policemen, corrupt politicians and all seeing computers, a world where fiction and science come together, of suspense and action where vulnerable citizens are mere pawns in a terrible experiment. As Simon Reece fights to expose the truth he faces mortal challenges, deadly enemies who will stop at nothing and a state which will do everything in its power to destroy him. Reece's quest is a story of Orwellian madness writ large in the 21st Century.

Paul White's review says all;

Revelations in the aftermath of a tragedy, lead Simon Reece, cyber-security entrepreneur, to embark on a quest to discover his true identity. This personal catastrophe intersects with national calamity – a fractured country, paralysed by rioting, plagued by terrorist violence, struggling to find its own new identify; a nation highly susceptible to the arguments of a populist movement that offers an apparently surefooted pathway amidst the sinkholes of a collapsing society and body politic.

The book’s author, Watkins, masterfully taps into the zeitgeist of potentially post-Brexit Britain, immersing the reader in a maelstrom from which the lead character and the country are co-joined in a struggle in which so-called “special relationships” are exposed as ephemeral window-dressings concealing shady goings-on where vested interests are ruthlessly pursued. Watkins takes us on a journey at which every twist and turn leads to revelations that shatter the very foundations of what might be considered normal, both for the individual and for society at large.

At the heart of the book lies a fundamental question: in highly volatile times, how much “collateral damage” to our freedom and civil liberties are we prepared to accept in return for state protection from myriad threats and dangers?

In a book that combines Buchanesque plot lines with Orwellian dystopia, every reader will surely find themselves reflecting on how Watkins’ vision could all too easily become a devastating reality.

Hi. I’m Graham Watkins and I have spent several years researching Welsh legends and myths. It has been a wonderful project and great fun as I explored rugged mountains, mysterious castles, enchanting waterfalls and golden beaches to discover the tales that have been handed down from generation to generation. Wales is a land of mystery and being a Celtic race the Welsh are fantastic story tellers. I've collected eighty of my favourite legends together in my book 'Welsh Legends and Myths.'

That’s how I started writing. My first novel 'The Iron Masters' was an historical novel set in Merthyr during the Napoleonic Wars when Merthyr Tydfil was rearming the British Empire, fortunes were being made through other's sweat and anything was possible. Today, I am a multi genre novelist, hobby farmer and explorer. It’s all been great fun and the story isn’t over yet. I've recently published 'A White Man's War,' the story of a terrible siege during which the Scouting movement was born and 'The Sicilian Defence' a novel about a young American Woman lured to Sicily to a terrible fate.

Right now I'm working on a modern day political thriller in which terrorists, computer programmers and a big brother state fight for their very survival. Great writing by Graham Watkins! His imagination about what could happen in the future - 2029 - is very believable! Even though it was a novel, it opened my eyes what could happen in the near future! As an a published author, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great novel!

Graham Watkins, author of The Enemy Within, does a marvelous job of creating a truly realistic, dystopian world.

This story asks the question, what is the citizenry willing to trade for safety? Truly, a lot. And a tech company, lead by Simon Reece, has exactly what the government needs: the ability to control the population. Only, things go seriously sideways when Reece starts to dig a little too deeply into classified material. Soon he’s imprisoned and the story becomes a desperate attempt on his part to escape, clear his name, and bring to light the truth of a little bit more than the heinous activity of top tier government officials.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and Graham Watkins’ narrative style. While all story and character arcs are nicely concluded by the end, it all happens very suddenly in the last 20% of the story. But, the build in the story and the surprise twist at the end, make up for what feels like a slightly rushed ending.

The Enemy Within: A Dystopian Thriller, is a compelling and timely look into what could be a potential and scary future for many developed nations in our world today.

The Enemy Within by Graham Watkins hits the ground running. Ripped from Brexit headlines, Watkins' eerie story rings true. The underlying thread, security versus freedom, weaves into the stuff of Simon Reece's nightmare journey into a technologically driven totalitarian state running amok in near-future Britain.
Readers in tune with Len Deighton's books will enjoy the way Watkins lays out the complex interplay of human relations in a stressful environment. The bad guys tend to get hung by repeating earlier offenses from their sordid past lives while the good guys struggle and stand together when confronting a repressive enemy. Though the main woman character demonstrated courage, she could have been fuller, had a more proactive role.
The Enemy Within pulls you into its vice and never lets you go. Highly recommended.

I didn’t like anything about it. For what it was it cost way too much money, Totally disappointing… Amazon I wish you would not put products like this out there for sale. The only good thing I was able to return it and get my money back and this item didn’t deserve even one star but I had to put it there so I could submit my review

The plot was scary, plausible, and well done. Never take the chip, no matter the excuse! Never! The descriptions were beautifully written and characters interesting. The bad guys were really dark and deliciously evil. I enjoyed that the protagonist was sucked into the intrigue without knowing it or why until the reasons are revealed. I was surprised by some of the word usage. As an American the British use of smelt for smelled and learnt for learned was fun to see. The point of view shifts, scene changes mid-chapter, were a little disruptive. There was an odd “Table of Contents” statement at the end of the chapters, which the author probably didn’t intend (computer glitch, maybe?) The reason for the four star rating is that I never really knew what the protagonist looked like. There was only one line about him having darker hair with silver at the temples. I wanted more. The female lead, Sandra was only described as attractive. Not enough, in my humble opinion. Sometimes the reader needed to be grounded more in the setting. I would’ve also liked the Protagonist’s inner thoughts. I wanted to know what he was thinking, reading from the gestures and expressions of the people he was interacting with. The book was only 227 pages (with notes) and could have been enriched by these details. Overall, this was a great, suspenseful read, and I greatly enjoyed it.

This is a book about (among other things) an authoritarian takeover in Britain. It's an intelligent, well-written novel and what I liked most is how it shows the possible relationship between the tech business and politicians who would enslave us. I also really liked the main character. Nice job, Graham!

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking read

A very good read. It makes you realise how easy it is for a few people to change the course of history. And how greed and power eventually brings itself down. I thought it had a good story line, with plots within plots. There were enough characters without it becoming complicated. I found it a real page turner and I couldn't put it down. This is the 3rd book I've read by Graham Watkins, each book covers a totally different subject and each one a very good read. I'm looking forward to his next book.

This book presents an imaginative insight into what life might be like if the UK had a ruthless, authoritarian and corrupt government able to dispose of enemies with the touch of a button. A successful computer expert's business is stolen from him by the baddies in Whitehall who use it to invade the privacy of every inhabitant. Our hero then discovers that corruption dates back to a tragic event in his childhood. An exciting struggle follows to right some dreadful wrongs. Great read!

I stayed up all night to finish the book, the story was exciting and imaginative, the characters were believable, there were times when the book made me feel anxious, thinking what if this was real, I like when a book gets under my skin, this one did, I think it will be in my head for a while. Highly recommended.
