Of course I identified with Nell. I was in an orphanage in 1942. It wasn't a work house. I don't know if there were any beatings. But wow did I learn things from the big kids, naughty things! I was only 5years old so I didn't know of too many things going on.
Every once in a while as a treat we would get an apple or 6 pieces of hard candy wrapped in wax paper. The big kids would wax the slide, was that ever fun!
I thought the writing was great and to the point. What a story. In the orphanage we all wished for that fairy tail loving mother. I never found her only a very emotionally sick adopted mother. We all want that elusive thing called" love" which to us was a be all end all. We do protect others and care for those who are very lost. Some of us give out the love to others that never quite reached us.

A beautiful story of what love and caring can do to young and old. I love that Neil in spite of her life of hardship and love, found in her heart to risk so much to safe a child. I recommend this clean book to everyone!

Good quality; colors a tiny bit different than expected.

Enjoyed the snippets of historical accuracy, how society treated people who were not "agreeable." to them.. Unfortunately, that phase was not even slightly limited to London. Nell' s journey was very well written. Other characters were also endearing and believable. Reminded me of Johnny Tremain and Dickens light, A great read

I enjoyed this very much. Sweet Robert went through a lot to get to where he is now. His nurse fought for him.She gets him a great life with his Grandmomma on his Mothers side. Sweet read.

The story in this book will remain with me a very long time. Sometimes you read a story and years later things come to mind that remind you of that story. This is one of those books. It's one of those books that appeal to all ages of both men and women.

This has to be one of the best stories that I have read in months. It's in the 1860's when a woman from the workhouse is hired to take care of the mute son of a rich peer. His son was labeled as " deficient " and " dumb" by doctors and left to the attic rooms with no education.
The woman is tasked with taking him to Bedlam by his new stepmother but she instead takes him into London and raised him until found by his maternal grandmother.
It's a terrible time for the poor. They have no social programs and are forced to work to survive. It's a time when a otherwise gifted son is labeled an idiot so his new half brother can eventually inherit.
I loved the " pluck" of Nell in working every single minute to give a young boy an education and experience he deserved.

If you are looking for a light hearted historical romance this is not! What it is, is a gut wrenching and soul shattering tale of a care-giver to a autistic & misunderstood & caste aside young boy. A story of unconditional love & emerging triumphant against all odds.

    Entertaining and g
Heartwarming Largely free of anachronisms, weird representations of London accents and strangely some Americanisms despite the author's origins. American terms and phrases have sneaked into British English over the years, but they were definitely not so common in the time period this book is set.
It's good to have a working class heroine and heroes. Overall it's entertaining and well written.
