A baker with secrets
Witches in trouble
The cameras are rolling
On your marks, get set, die!
Poppy Wilkinson is thrilled to be chosen as a contestant on The Great British Baking Contest. As an American with English roots, winning the crown as Britain’s Best Baker would open doors she’s dreamed of. In more ways than one. Appearing on the reality show is her chance to get into Broomewode Hall and uncover the secrets of her past. But strange things are happening on the show’s set: accusations of sabotage, a mysterious death, suspiciously unsociable residents at Broomewode Hall—and the judges can be real witches.
There are murmurs that Broomewode is an energy vortex. It certainly makes Poppy see and do things that aren’t exactly normal, and seems to draw interesting characters to the neighborhood.
When a fellow contestant dies in mysterious circumstances, Poppy has more to worry about than burned pies and cakes that won’t rise. There’s a murderer on the loose and it’s up to Poppy and her new friends to solve the crime before it becomes a real show-stopper.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2020THE GREAT WITCHES BAKING SHOW is a standalone read set in the area of Bath, England. Poppy, the heroine is 25, she was found in a cardboard box when just a few days old. Efforts to find her mother were not successful. Now, she is looking for her biological mother. The only thing she has from her past is a beautiful knit blanket. The TV reality show, The Baking Show is filmed on the grounds of a beautiful manor home. In the dining room of that home she saw a painting of a young woman with a shawl that looks exactly like her blanket. She is determined to get in that house and see what she can find out about her mother. Only thing, the manor house is off-limits.
Poppy has applied to be on the show where cooks compete. She was selected and now she has got to stay on each week until she gets her chance to get in that house. She has discovered the family living in the home are not friendly. They too are hiding secrets. Oh, Poppy has a gift. She sees dead people. No one, not even her adoptive parents know about this gift.
The show starts filming and it opens up a whole new world to Poppy. She is meeting new people, she is finding adventure, she has scouted out the manor home from the woods and the hostess for the show seems to have taken an interest in her. Things are going along pretty well until she discovers a dead body in the station next to her. It is a fellow contestant that seems to have been making a name for himself over his behavior every time he loses a challenge. He is a very likable character but he has obviously made an enemy.
There are a lot of twist and turns as Poppy searches for clues on the whereabouts of her mother. She believes she sees a dead person marching around the grounds of the manor home in an old military uniform and carrying a weapon. She is getting special instructions from the hostess and she is sorting out just who she can be friends with and who not to trust. This is not a romance novel. It is a cozy mystery. That means a mystery but it is a fun read with a lot of excitement. A lot of questions will be answered but Poppy will have more adventures as she tries to locate her mother. She has already discovered people that may well know exactly who her mother is and she has had a vision that she needs to check out. It is going to be a fun series with lots of adventure and excitement. Poppy also discovers that she has more gifts and family than she ever thought possible. I really enjoyed it and I definitely recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 1/15/2020
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2020Poppy Wilkinson worked hard to be chosen as a contestant on The Great British Baking Contest.
She grew up in America, but had her roots in Briton. She wanted to be on the show because it is being filmed where she was found as an infant, abandoned outside of a bakery. Now she wants to try to learn about her origins.
On the first day of baking, one of the contestants is complaining about being sabotaged, (sore loser?)
When he is voted off the show he vows to prove his oven was faulty, and someone really was sabotaging his recipes.
When Poppy finds him dead in the competition tent, she determines that she wants to find his murderer because he was the only friend in the competition she had.
In the process of investigating, Poppy learns she has many more strengths than she thought possible, and finds a stray cat to help calm her down when she's really stressed.
This was my first story from Nancy Warren, and it definitely will not be my last. She has really good interaction between the characters, a bit of humor, and good descriptions of the settings so you can easily visualize where the characters are.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020Poppy Wilkinson has landed herself a spot on The Great British Baking Contest. While it would be lovely to win, and the exposure from being on the show is bound to be great for her, she has her own reasons for becoming a contestant. You see, Poppy was abandoned when she was a baby. The show gives her a chance to sneak her way into Broomewode Hall and check out something she recognized: the pattern on her baby blanket in one of their old paintings. Unfortunately for Poppy, her past isn’t the only mystery on the baking show. One of the contestants is being sabotaged and when they turn up dead on set, their unfortunate demise becomes the most important mystery to solve.
When I saw this series, I knew I had to read it. It sounded right up my alley and the perfect kind of fluffy book until you get to the murder mystery. I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed. This book has a great cast of characters, majority of which seem like sweet and wonderful people. Poppy is such a fun and sweet character. I related to her worries about being on camera and the nervousness about baking on camera. I would be going through the same thing if I was in her shoes. I can also see why the characters began to develop friendships with one another so fast because they seem like cool people I’d love to meet.
The book has two mysteries. The main one is Poppy’s background and how that connects to the supernatural world that she’s a member of, which is the mystery that will continue throughout the series. I think that there was a great introduction to the supernatural world, but I do with there was more than what we got. The second mystery is the murder, which takes a bit of time before it starts but is well thought out and I didn’t catch on to the killer until a bit before they were revealed.
All in all, I think this is a great book that’s fun and entertaining. I’m looking forward to seeing how Poppy and company develop as the series continues and the baking competition starts to get hot. I’m also looking forward to seeing how big the supernatural community is and what else Poppy can do as the series continues. It’s also neat that there’s a recipe at the end, so I’m excited to see what other recipes will pop up since I love baking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
Like the Vampire Knitting Club series this book is a wonderful read.
I hope Nancy Warren will be writing books for a long time to come.😃
One slight niggle though, it may be an Americanism, I’m not sure, but in England it’s spreading as well: not knowing when to use which pronoun. “Marcus told Gina and I”: “I” is only used when it’s the subject, in all other instances “me” should be used.
Apart from that: 5 out of 5!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars book 1
A lovely easy to read book, with witchcraft, murder and intrigue, along with baking and a couple of ghosts! Believable characters and the arrival of a black cat, as a witch myself it was a perfect read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Murder mystery with baking and a bit of witchcraft
Writing and proof reading is okay.
While set in England with a predominantly english cast, it doesn't seems to be written by a native. Feels too americanized, not very well researched.
I don't like the female lead, she supposed to have empathy and intuition, but makes weird and stupid assumptions, like that at a tranquil place there couldn't possibly be a murder or short hair means someone is a cop, but then he has longer hair than she expected? Also, why should one be embarrassed for crying, after discovering someone you know, dead? That's completely normal! Then, she thinks she has a right to invade someone's home, because it may have clues to her birth mom or that she should be allowed to just use her witchy powers to stay in the competition.
Just a lot of small stuff, that make the FML and the story difficult to like.
