About the author

I was born in Scotland in 1977 and always enjoyed studying history. I decided to write my Forest Lord novels after seeing a house called “Sherwood” when I was out at work one day. Since then I've started a new series, the Warrior Druid of Britain Chronicles, and just completed a trilogy about Alfred the Great.
In 2021 the Xbox game HOOD: Outlaws and Legends was released, featuring my writing, and that was a fantastic experience.
I used to be in a heavy metal band although I tend to just play guitar in my study these days. I did use those guitars to write the theme song for the podcast I co-host, Rock, Paper, Swords! with Matthew Harffy, though. Give it a listen, we've interviewed great guests like Diana Gabaldon, Simon Scarrow, Bernard Cornwell, Dan Jones and more!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021This is my favorite type of story. Historical fiction that is set quite far back in history. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is due to a few errors that a good proofreader would have found. As mentioned in the afterword of the second book, this is something a family member does for him. I imagine that since these are self published, that expenses would be more of an issue. And the editing and proofing done is actually quite good, considering. Being a proofreader myself however, the few errors here stood out for me. Things like characters being on horseback one moment, and bemoaning the fact that they don't have horses the next. But, as stated, there are very few of these. The story is excellent, with well fleshed out, if somewhat singular, or confusing characterizations. Well enough realised that I cared about them, but had a bit of difficulty when a character was considered to be a certain way, but whose actions didn't jibe with how they were viewed. I doubt this would be an issue for most readers. It is for me because I am a voracious reader ( I average a book every 2 days), and my favorite authors always populate their books with multidimensional characters. All in all, an exciting, entertaining series. I look forward to more from Mr. McKay.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2020One thing you can say for certain about post-Roman Britain - there's a whole lot of conflict, and a choice of enemies to face. The Picts, the Dalriadans, the Saxons, they all want control - Bellicus and Duro have their hands full in this emotionally charged tale. Amidst the turmoil of those conflicts, the author has also included some mental challenges - even the imposing Bellicus is not immune to doubts - his vulnerabilities are a nice touch, makes the giant Druid a bit more human. Trust, loyalty, friendship, failure...all of these things plus physical pain are some of the issues confronting him and Duro.
Another thing you can say for certain is that the author has produced another page turning episode. Plenty of action, believable characters, and a story line full of surprises, this series just keeps getting better.... and there's more on the horizon. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020The more McKay writes, the more I realize how good his writing and storytelling is. The Northern Thorne is simply, excellent.
By the end of "Song of the Centurion" as a reader you're invested in the wellbeing of each character. This epic tale continues to grab at emotions of the reader. Turning each page eagerly and anxiously to see what befalls Bellicus, Duro, and equally, Cai. It took me a little over 3 evenings to read this book, but it's not because it was short, it isn't, but because McKay writes a story that you can't put down. Literally going about my day, I would wonder what was going to happen next, excitedly looking to the time I could dive back in.
I eagerly look forward to the next installment, and hope that this review will spur others to delve into The Warrior of Druid Britain Series. They are nothing short of phenomenal.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2020I have always enjoyed Steven McKay's books and "The Northern Throne" is no exception. It is the latest in the warrior/druid series and features Bellicus, a young druid who is also an exceptional warrior. No Gandalf image here! Exciting reading and a clear picture of the characters keeps the pages turning. Excellent read - thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022Bellicus the Druid and his friend Duro, a former Roman centurion, have already suffered a great deal in recent years but, for them, things about about to get even worse.
In Dun Breatann, Bellicus believes the disparate northern tribes must put aside their differences, become allies, and face the Saxon threat together under one High King or Higgh Queen.
Is this possible?
This third volume is packed with adventure, battles, triumph, and tears.
Another interesting story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ongoing saga
I don't like giving away spoilers and I'm not going to start now, this tale could have been written in one long book but that would have taken away a lot from the ongoing saga.
Steven in this the third book of the warrior druid of Britain Chronicles has excelled the story along nicely.
Excellent characters, descriptive text, fights life everything and everyone,it all just flows together and gels making a damn good reading experience.
Praise to Steven and I would highly recommend this and the whole series for your reading pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best one so far.
Was pretty dark and Brutal. And reading the Authors notes at the end you can understand where some of the emotion might have come from. It Was hard to put this book down. There is still a little bit of an untold story in this book so I'm hoping the next one answers a few questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction
Little is known about the period following the withdrawal of the Legions from Britannia despite it being a fascinating time of change and upheaval, and good historical fiction can help us understand the era. The books in this series are very well written, and the reader is provided with an excellent and plausible description of the times and the battles involved as Saxons, Picts, Britons, and others vie for dominance. Excellent, likeable characters.

This is a quality book series which captures your interest through out the series and seems well versed in the history attached to the book. The piece on the stone henge is very good as I have visited the site as well as the surrounding area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another ripping yarn
Continuing the story of Bellicus and Alt Clota with more action than a Scwarzenegger movie. Looking forward to the next instalment.
