Winner of the Kindle Storyteller Award 2019 for The Picture On The Fridge

Born at an early age, Ian W Sainsbury quickly learned to talk about himself in the third person, meaning a career in the arts was all but inevitable. In 1987, he ran away from university to join the circus, playing in a band providing accompaniment for monkeys riding on pigs.

Finding it hard to match such early success, Ian played piano on cruise ships before spending over a decade singing in European piano bars. He also ran (and still does) a choir or two, singing pop stuff in a pub.

The next career move was obvious, and no one was surprised when Ian spent five years as a stand-up comic. He also began writing music and material for ventriloquist Paul Zerdin, including co-writing Zerdin’s Vegas show in 2016.

After music, circuses, puppets, comedy and choirs, Ian pooled his earnings to date and was able to buy a palatial two-man tent and a skateboard. It was at this point that he decided the world might be ready for a novel or two.

Since The World Walker appeared on Amazon in 2016, Ian has—to his amazement—found he is one of those people who does what he loves for a living without having to sell a kidney.

He lives in East Anglia, UK, with Mrs S, two children, and a flatulent dog.

1425 pages. Worth it. Everything being context, here's what I've read and liked in the past fifteen or so years. The Ian Banks' Culture series. Ian McDonald — everything. Kim Stanley Robinson — everything, but especially Rice and Salt & Galileo. Ken McLeod — maybe 2/3 of everything. Alastair Reynolds, Peter Hamilton. The Night's Dawn trilogy. . Elizabeth Bear. Michael Swanwick. The Change series. Karl Schroeder, Jack Vance (again) and Robert Silverberg (again) — Poul Anderson, Brian Aldiss. Stross. Caitlin Kiernan et al from Subterranean. The Nova Swing series. Justin Cronin (The Passage), Robert Jackson Bennet. Bacigalupi, Effinger. More recently, Octavia Butler, N.K, Jemisin, Mira Grant, Theodora Goss, Vivian Shaw, Katheryn Hurley, Elizabeth Hand. (I may have misremembered, not to mention misspelled, some names.) And lots of others. Along the way have been many best books ever. So, here's another Ian, one I'd never heard of. World-building, narrative. Compassion, as opposed to individualism. Spiritual discipline. High concept, but not overdone.

I enjoyed the humanity that the characters were imbued with. Flaws and strengths that were unique to each character made their choices believable.

Really well written series. It taught me so much about myself I never gave serious thought about. Very singular story and tells me why we are so lucky to have a consciousness and choice. Best use it wisely and hope for some luck in the choices we make.

I loved the story, although had to wince a few times when it came to science aspects. The present infatuation with nanotechnology results in treating it like a potential magic force capable of going beyond the physics currently known. I am not sure if having advanced nano would allow anyone to affect objects at a distance. All the superpowers we salivate over are just good old fashioned magics cloaked in technological jargon. But then maybe it's just me.

This is one of those books that when you get to the end you stop reading to digest what you have read and hope you can find someone else who has read it to talk about it with only to find you both are at a loss for words. Highly recommend

The book kept me hooked. I lost many hours of sleep. It also quite literally blew my mind at the huge questions that were posed. I’d recommend to any lover of science fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn’t see that coming!

Wow What a journey and an amazing story! I read all 4 books back to back and couldn’t put it down. This is also a story I didn’t want to end. I laughed out loud and cried inside. Fantastic intelligent plot that weaves through the story and ties up beautifully at the end. It can’t be a ‘fluke’ because I’ve just read the Halfhero Triogy and that’s brilliant too. Highly recommend both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spelling mistakes!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 2020
Liked the book but couldn't carry on reading after the mistakes. I know it's pathetic but it's a bug bear of mine, sorry. Thought people were supposed to read books through before they were released to identify spelling mistakes? The main one was breath when it should have been breathe, also too when it should have been to. Once again sorry for being picky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 3, 2020
What a terrific read. Well done Mr Sainsbury. Believable and well crafted characters with all too human flaws combined with an intriguing plot line that developed progressively over the series. I read a lot of sci fi novels and some are too pretentious and complex, losing focus on the humanity of the characters, but not this series. I genuinely didn't want it to end.
