Talleyman in the Ice: A classic Royal Navy novel (The Victorian Maritime Adventure Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Talleyman is headed to the Arctic Circle, where an icy war is raging…
1854, Russia
The Crimean War has been raging for a year.
On half pay from the Royal Navy, Thomas Talleyman is now farming his father’s land in the Fens, with a wife and two young sons.
But when Captain Paxton Only appears with an intriguing proposition, Talleyman soon finds himself as First Lieutenant in charge of a motley crew aboard the HMS Flamingo, bound for Murmansk in Arctic Russia. Their mission: to smuggle in a secret agent to support a rebellion against the Tsar.
Icebound and alone, when the Flamingo comes under fire from a mystery sniper and Captain Only goes missing, Talleyman is forced to take command.
But will the increasingly restless crew obey him? Can the Flamingo survive a whole winter deep in enemy territory locked in the ice?
And can the crew hold off a regiment of Russian cavalry…?
TALLEYMAN IN THE ICE is the second book in The Victorian Maritime Adventure Series: thrilling historical adventures stuffed to the gunwales with authentic detail of nineteenth-century seafaring.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2022The storyline in the book was unfortunately hard to follow. Several characters were introduced early and then nothing more was heard from them until much later in the story. When their names were reintroduced no effort was made by the author to further develop the character or to simply reFresh in the mind of the reader what and who the character was. Often, the weekly developed characters were participating in stiff, disjointed conversations which further made the book hard to read.
I did appreciate the authors in-depth and vivid descriptions of both the ship and landscape the ship sailed in. The clear and informative descriptions of the ship and the ice made the lack of character development in the many key personifies hard to understand when considering how to rate this nook.
I found this a difficult book to read and easy to put down. I would not recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2021As a follow up to the first Talleyman book, this is a seamless continuance. Talleyman has retired to his farm, but is recruited to join in the war against Russia by taking a ship into the Arctic to a port in Siberia where they get frozen in. All does not end well, but he survives. I had hoped to read the 3rd installment, but it seems the author never completed it. Rats!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022A work of fiction that reflects on the life of a British officer of the times. A good read. A good sea story of sailors.it's
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2023Historical novel with a terrific story with many details of the era throughout combined with an unusual and dense writing style like the classic novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2022Not a good flow very amateur too predictable easy to put down, not a page Turner pleased to get to the predictable end
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021A fascinating story of a Russian winter, a Russian war and Russian double dealing. Politics all the way through. Even to the very end. What awaits Talkeyman next? We’ll have to wait and see.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2021American ignoramus that I am, I knew little of the history in this novel, based on great events in the course of European history. A travesty that we are not taught much in our public schools systems. What a tale, and to be continued as Captain Talleyman goes to his new adventure in colonial India, and as a tease his nemesis, Garvey seems an eternal revenge ! Thank you, John James, for these two masterpieces.Keep them coming, please!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021Talley man is an interesting character for mid 19th century England. This volume moves from the Irish Potato famine to the Russian War.
Topics are just in line but far enough a field to make plausible story lines.
Enjoyed and look forward to the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
It just takes getting used to the author’s style of writing.
- Ian J.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 29, 2022
1.0 out of 5 stars Better than his first of these two
Not a lot of fluidity but at least some seamanship. For a maritime adventure, very poor. Shall give this author a miss in future.
