Temporary Insanity: An enemies to lovers gay romantic comedy: (Paul and Indy #1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 332 ratings

Sleeping with the enemy never felt so good.

When Paul Davenport comes face to face with the man he caught in bed with his boyfriend years before, it's hate at first sight. Well, second sight. Indy should be apologizing, not flirting. Except the gorgeous barman is completely oblivious to their paths ever having crossed before.

Despite his feelings, Paul's powerless to resist the full-on charm offensive that follows. It's fine though. It's just sex. No emotions. No getting to know each other. Just a bout of temporary insanity that's sure to run its course once the simmering passion starts to wear off.

Only what if it's not? Indy's nothing like the man Paul expected him to be from his past actions. What if they're perfect for each other and Paul's just too stubborn to see it? Forging a relationship with him would require an emotional U-turn Paul might not be capable of making.

There's a thin line between love and hate, and Paul's about to discover just how thin it really is. He can't possibly be falling for the man that ruined his life. Can he?

Warning: This book contains hate sex—sort of, lots of banter, and a pink elephant. No, really it does. Actually, two elephants. Please note: Although this book is in the Temporary series, it occurs during the same timeline as A Temporary Situation. Therefore both books can be read as standalones and in any order.

H.L Day grew up in the North of England. As a child she was an avid reader, spending lots of time at the local library or escaping into the imaginary worlds created by the books she read. Her grandmother first introduced her to the genre of romance novels, as a teenager, and all the steamy sex they entailed. Naughty Grandma!

One day, H.L Day stumbled upon the world of m/m romance. She remained content to read other people’s books for a while, before deciding to give it a go herself.

Now, she’s a teacher by day and a writer by night. Actually, that’s not quite true—she’s a teacher by day, procrastinates about writing at night and writes in the school holidays, when she’s not continuing to procrastinate. After all, there’s books to read, places to go, people to see, exercise at the gym to do, films to watch. So many things to do—so few hours to do it in. Every now and again, she musters enough self-discipline to actually get some words onto paper—sometimes they even make sense and are in the right order.

I enjoy a good enemies to lovers tale. And who could be more of an enemy than someone you caught screwing your ex? Oh, I could feel the hate emanating from Paul, not that I could blame him. I have no idea though, how in the world he managed to keep Indy at arms length for so long. I just wanted someone to shake, or slap, Paul. He really did get quite frustrating. I really liked Indy, he was so funny, and the snark traded between the two, that really made this book for me. Really hoping Russell gets a book, because I feel like it would be such a wasted opportunity not to.

Parts of this book had me laughing out loud, especially when Paul was determined to have "hate sex" with Indy but failed miserably at it. The elephants were hilarious, too. Paul hangs on to his determination to not let Indy in emotionally for almost too long; I was getting a little impatient until he realizes what he has lost and is then determined to win Indy for real This is why I can't rate this five stars, but all in all, H.L. Day is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

A great enemies to lovers romance with heart. I really enjoyed this book and I really like this author’s writing style.
  • Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019
This book's timeline is concurrent with the first book in the series, A Temporary Situation. You can easily read this story without having read book one...it's funny; I could have sworn I had read the story by the threads woven through this book, but I can't find it or a review anywhere...so maybe sometime in the future.

There are several secondary characters who play big roles in this story, and they are fully fleshed out; or at least really well for the parts they play. Dom is Paul's best friend, and he comes across as prickly and afraid of committing to Tristan, their boss, because he "doesn't like him." He also was the one who helped Paul pick up the pieces after he walked in on his only long term boyfriend with a stranger in their bed.

Paul works in the mail room with Gabrielle, who is nosey and determined to get Paul back in the game. Russell, the office virgin, is also the office gossip supply. The closest place to get a drink and something to eat is a pub just down the road. When Russell and Paul stop by after work, Paul is none too pleased to see that he recognizes the new barman.

    * Some very slight spoilers *

By the time Paul gets to order, he is ready for apologies, excuses; anything but to be FLIRTED with by the very man who ruined his relationship. And to top it off, the man doesn't even have the decency to recognise him! After a few awkward visits to the bar, Paul finally has enough and explains why he looks familiar. What does he get? A brush off apology and a can't we put the past in the past? Seriously. If only the jerk wasn't so darn hot.

With the intervention of his friends, Paul decides that since Indigo...He will NOT call him Indy...is so persistent, they can have "hate sex," but it turns out that he's not very good at it. He has to hold back so much so that Indy won't get the wrong impression. Heaven forbid the man actually think this is more than very hot, no strings attached, sexy times. He even gets a huge pink elephant out of the deal...even though he was just joking.

Time goes by, and the men learn they actually have a lot more in common in their backgrounds than they had ever believed possible. However, due to some personal experience, Indy has a much better way of handling his situation. Unfortunately, Paul's family refuses to see him; any part of his truth, and it makes him miserable.

When Indy finally decides that self-preservation is more important than what they have going on, Paul is still in denial. He still wants to hate indigo for past transgressions, so he lets him walk away. However, good ol' Gabrielle and Russell show up and actually make things worse. But, back at Paul's flat while he's thinking about how stupid Dom is being by continuing to hold on to the past instead of forgiving and being with Tristan, he has an epiphany. His absentee friend has brought a new clarity to his mind and heart, and he has to make it right.

Of course, once things are going well, Paul even gets Indy his own elephant, ghost of a nightmare from Indy's past come to try to ruin it all. But, with some advice from a friend, Paul is wise enough not to back down and hold on for dear life. When the news isn't what they expect, the world starts to sparkle again. They even get to run into a certain so-and-so, which was interesting to say the least. In the end, Paul and Indy finally get their HEA, and the author has teased the next book, which should be V-card holding, gossip loving, Russell.

    Happy reading!

    * I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *

I read both books and though they were ok, I don’t understand the reviews. Yes, some parts were funny but very few. They books might have taking place at the same time but Paul and Indy’s was written with less focus. They seem to be more secondary characters. It’s best to read their story first. Plus, having to sign up to read why the pineapple you made such a part of the story. No thanks.

I had a hard time with this book at first, I guess because I’ve been in Paul’s shoes and been cheated on. Thankfully, I never knew who, but I had to admit I felt Paul’s anger in this story so much. I could believe the audacity of Indy. Even after Indy found out the truth. But the more I got to reading this book, I had to realize there are three sides to every story. The truth was there, and Paul had to let go to find it out.

When Paul saw Indy for the first time after several years, the anger was still there from finding him in bed with his then boyfriend. And the fact that Indy didn’t know who he was and kept flirting was making Paul angrier. He finally, after a few times in the bar, told Indy the truth and Indy was apologetic. Or so Paul thought until the man started flirting again. Then the mention of hate sex came up in a conversation and Paul thought he could get on board with that. I mean, Indy was hot, right? But one night turned into two and then more. Indy was trying to get past that wall, where at times he saw a glimpse of the real Paul, but the shutters would crash down and it was getting too much. Indy wanted Paul for real, and if he couldn’t get past the past, then they’d never have a hope for the future. But when Paul realized he was about to really lose Indy, and seeing someone else’s relationship being tanked as well, it made him realize what he was doing and how he really felt. And now he has to fix it or lose Indy for good. If he’s not too late already.

Like I said, at first I had a really hard time with this. I mean dating the enemy, or screwing him anyway. But then I had to think about it. Long before Paul, but still. It wasn’t Indy’s fault about what happened. He was a victim of being used and lied to just like Paul was. And it really wasn’t fair for Paul to place the full blame on him. Yes, Indy could have maybe looked into it to be sure but in the heat of the moment, he didn’t. And he even admits his part in it. But most of the blame should have rested solely on his ex’s shoulders. It was his fault. And seeing Indy, as hurtful as it was, Paul realized eventually, Indy actually saved him from the trouble down the road. Because the more he thought, the more he had a feeling this wasn’t his ex’s first or last time cheating. But what I hate the most is that it took something drastic for Paul to wake up and see what was in front of him. When you’re in the heat of it all, it’s hard to get a true clear picture. No matter how good sex may be for some, it often complicates things, especially if you are doing it for revenge or hate. And not getting the whole truth about everything first.

Thankfully, they both pulled their heads out of their butts and really talked. Like really talked. And got it all out. It was a shame they had to go through some of what they had to, but unfortunately, some of us can be really hardheaded about things and it makes it worse. Thankfully, in this one, they figured it out..

These 2 have some pretty funny moments regardless of their first meeting. I love how Indy continues to push his limits to show he isn't who we think he is.

I LOVED this book. I’m not a fan of cheating in any capacity in a story as a rule, but I can’t deny it made for an excellent storyline. The main characters are funny and interesting, and their reactions to absurd situations are totally relatable.

The romance developed beautifully and there was the perfect blend of humour and heartwarming throughout. It’s also made me desperate to read about the side characters from this book, some of whom I truly hope exist in real life so I can become best friends with them. Fantastic book and I can’t wait to read the others in the series.

This was a really enjoyable read, Paul and Indy were likable characters - however obtuse Paul was being. The timeline was similar to the first book and it added more depth to some of that plot. Looking forward to Russell's story

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, relaxing read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 23, 2019
Good read, that doesn't really take a lot of mental effort. The reason why this got rated four stars rather than five, was that some situations and reactions of characters were just too unrealistic (the main one being Paul's behaviour, when Indy was on the date with Ben - I get jealousy, I really do, but I really can't put it together with the character portrayed) and at some point I got really annoyed with it. But it is a good book.
