The book cover says - "Deception!" Such an ugly word. But the correct word for what she had done. And yet her position as governess to the Brewster family was her lifeline. She had seized it as the only possible means of survival. And there had been no problem. None at all. At least not until he arrived. But what would she do now if Mr Simon Kirkland saw through her disguise! If, underneath the gray powder and the dark shadows that made her look a fading spinster, he should discern Virginia Spicer, the very girl he had laughingly called "Miss Ginger Spice", only six months ago the Belle of Bath!

A well-portrayed romance that I enjoyed- good characterisation and an empathic treatment of the story's dilemmas. (Written in 1981, there is no explicit sex, but who cares?)

It was good, but not satisfying. I wish the end had extended beyond where it did so we could see exactly how things got wrapped up! *sigh*

Premise that a young woman would willingly become a companion/governess in disguise and not be found out was not plausible.

I enjoyed this book! It is lovely and romantic. Everything from manners, dialogue between characters, etc. felt very authentic to the Regency Era time period.

If you love historical fiction and Regency romance, I recommend this book!

I do wish that there was more dialogue between various characters, and that relationships were shown a bit deeper and more developed. However, it was still a very enjoyable read.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Sapere Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it!

I am a huge fan of Dorothy Mack books, but this one stretches my credulity. There was such a disproportion in favor of internal musings over dialogue that I found myself wanting to gag the meanderings of the protagonist.
A governess? A companion? She was neither. Simply given to her own thoughts, barely offering guidance to any of her charges (allowing the younger to cheat in a game and the older to behave in a way that would draw censure; not revealing her concerns about a suitor to her employer, etc.) There was no romance. Simply a busybody who from one chance meeting recalled her "eyes". Perhaps I am not given to a romantic nature... But by the time I reached my 30s I amassed a prodigious acquaintance sufficient to prevent me from recalling an individual in the basis of having seen their eyes.
I dragged myself through this story, hoping beyond measure that it would, at some point improve. It never did.

This was my first book by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. This plot was common enough--a destitute lady disguised herself to work as a governess/companion, but a man from her past accidentally came in to her new life that she was afraid that he might put a spoke in her wheel--However, it was the fine writing Ms. Mack demonstrated that turned this commonly-used theme to a very enjoyable and thoughtful read. It had no real villains, no great actions or mystery, instead it had a lot of character studies in a quiet country manors that earned this a four-star.

The only complaint I had was that both hero and heroine's declaration for each other was a bit too hastily wrapped up. It never satisfactorily explained why heroine was so irritated of the hero except until the last few pages of the book when she decided that she was in love with him (I had to back track to make sure that I did not miss any pages), that was not a smooth enough of transition which caused it a star. Nevertheless, I still recommend this book.

Interesting story with characters brought cohesively together...nice construction of regency atmosphere. Strong Heroine. Hero could have had more scenes though.

A very good story, a pity the ending didn't have a bit more detail of what happened when they got back, but would recomend it because it was a bit different to some.

I loved Dorothy Mack’s books, and enjoyed this one too. The problem is that it is entirely overwritten with the wrong characters. The central romance is clearly Virginia and Simon, yet breath swathes of text is devoted to anything and everything but them. The ending is so abrupt as to make the reader question if a chapter or two has been accidentally cut out.
Worth reading, but skim over the waffle.
