The Book of Eve Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Should some secrets go to the grave?

My name is Eve...

But that is not my real name, rather it is the one given to me by Annaliese when she invited me into her goldern world. It was all I had ever longed for - a life of easy luxury and glamorous intentions - with beautiful people as my friends.

Yet even the best party must eventually end, and this one ended in a storm of tragedy and bitter betrayal. Overnight, my perfect life was exposed for the lie it was ... and so I ran, as far and as fast as I could.

Now an irresistible urge is summoning me back from my lonely exile, to attend one last party - Annaliese's farewell bash. Maybe I will find the resolution I seek, or maybe I will only find more heartbreak and deceit. And always the same question begs to be answered.

Should some secrets go to the grave?

The Book of Eve is a sumptuous and sophisticated tale of friendship, love, and betrayal amongst the rich and beautiful. With overtones of the glamour of the 1920s and echoes of the Great Gatsby, this is a beautiful and clever read which will envelop you in the world of Eve and her friends.

Blake will take you to the brink...the rest is up to you.

Blake will take you to the brink...the rest is up to you.
I have read a handful of books by Julia Blake and loved all of them. This one not only intrigued me; but managed to capture me within the first eight pages of the prologue! Eve has been gone a year and now she finds she must return. This brings to mind two questions. Why did she leave in the first place and what has happened to make her return? There comes a time when you’ve got to face your demons and go home. So this is the story of Eve’s journey home starting at the beginning before Annaliese. The journey back is painful and filled with uncertainty, anger, despair, hope, love and secrets. Blake will take you to the brink...the rest is up to you. As I’ve mentioned, I have read five of Blake’s books and every single one is a five star rating. She is a diverse author who has successfully crossed genres (contemporary fiction, romance, sagas, poetry/short stories, sci-fi, fantasy, myths and legends); but also the age spectrum from adults and YA to even middle grade and tweens as Erinsmore is certainly appropriate for my granddaughters ages 9 and 13 and, of course, grandmothers. The Book of Eve sounded biblical to me so I wasn’t surprised that the cover had a “bible” look. What I wasn’t expecting were little nugget surprises like the chapters titled as books from the Bible. Another little penchant of Blake is that she likes to include cameo appearances of characters from her other books. I was reading along, and there’s Ruth from Chaining Daisy! Note: The Book of Eve was originally written prior to Chaining Daisy and takes place 10 years or so earlier. Oh! Robert and Annaliese also happen to pop in Becoming Lili! Blake’s books are the whole package. Every detail, the cover, the pages, characters come to life on the page, the story waxes and wanes and twists and turns. Just when you think you figured it all out; you don’t. She keeps you on the edge until the very last page is turned and the last sentence is read. Well done! (This is where you are supposed to applaud!) 🙌🏻😃

Julia Blake’s The Book of Eve is a sophisticated, sexy psychological drama with thrills and mystery. The lavish scenes of the rich offer an updated British version of the decadent scenes in Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. As in the Gatsby, what lies beneath this glossy surface is coming undone too. But there the parallels end.

Eve, whose real name is Melissa, has fled this lavish lifestyle to Montego Bay, where the book opens with our protagonist living a simple life, working as a waitress at a beach bar and restaurant; having fled from something so disturbing that she wonders if she will ever dare return to England. But the death of her friend and benefactor, Annaliese, (the famous author and beloved socialite who who gave Melissa the nickname Eve and enabled her to be part of the charmed life she has fled), is the one thing that will bring Eve back to England. Eve learns of Annaliese’s death through her friend Ruth, part of Annaliese’s inner circle. Eve has sent to Ruth a draft of a book she has written while in self-inflicted exile. She should have known it would bring that world back. But she never expected to learn that Annaliese had died!

So Eve returns to England, Annaliese’s funeral and the story and its mysteries begin to unfold: Eve’s, Annaliese’s and those of Annaliese’s inner circle. The characters, who are all part of each other’s lives, are also sophisticated with depth, flaws and engaging personal histories that add to the story’s dimension and enjoyment. The passions, conflicts and flaws of the characters show us that we are all human despite our outer trimmings. Ms. Blake’s male characters are as well-developed as her females. Scott and Robert will stay with me. And Caro, Annaliese’s “bulldog” secretary will remain with me too. The plot offers plenty of surprises, sexy scenes and dark secrets. You will adore the ending!

Wow, what a powerful book. I could not put it down. Yeah, that's cliche, but its also true. I woke up at 3:30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, so grabbed the book and finsihed it at 5:10. Then I slept. :)

I don't read a lot of women's fiction, or romance, or whatever genre this one fit in - not sure it does, other than "fiction." It starts with Eve's year of exile in Jamaica, when she finds out that her friend died and she flies back to England for the funeral. Throughout the book I kept wanting to know what it was that her friend and mentor DID that made her run halfway around the world to get away. The book goes back further then to detail Eve's life from age 19, over the 8 years she spent in the circle of friend's that was "Annaliese's inner circle," back to the present. But it doesn't jump around from present to past. It was deeply engrossing.

I loved all the character's but sometimes Eve made me so frustrated I wanted to scream at her, "Why are you doing that?!" Of course, that was by design, and Julia Blake wanted the reader to be angry with the MC, because we KNEW she was ruining her life by the things she said, but mostly by what she left unsaid.

    Very powerful!

Lost, found, and chosen family are the underlying themes of The Book of Eve, but at its heart is a moving love story - and I don’t mean just romance. Blake eloquently depicts love in all its forms, never shying from the agonizing heart ache which accompanies them. An angsty plot is the cherry on top of this page turner. Bravo!

The writing is outstanding. I was drawn in by the characters immediately, then entranced. My day was put on hold and nothing else was done until I finished the book late at night. I have never been captivated by a book in this manner. I even called my mother the next morning and told her to put down whatever she was reading and start The Book of Eve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating mystery unfolds
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2025
With brooding mystery at its heart, The Book of Eve captivates right from the start. Eve is living abroad, in Jamaica, in obscurity, writing a novel, having fled an undisclosed betrayal back home. Then she hears her former friend and mentor, the socialite and author, Annaliese, has died. She returns to England to confront her past, and at the funeral is back in the company of her former close friends, Annaliese’s prickly PA, and the man she once loved, Scott. They sit to watch a pre-recorded video by Annaliese, addressing them all with incisive commentary.

The story heads into flashback, telling the tale of how Eve – or Melissa, as she was in her youth – comes to fall in with the elite crowd. She is lifted from an unpleasant relationship and depressing job into a golden world – but a world whose glamour is doomed to fade, and where no one is quite who they seem.

I thought The Book of Eve really hit the mark. I’ve read several of Julia Blake’s books, and all are of first-rate quality. The Book of Eve is no exception – all the more impressive considering it's her first novel. If you’re looking for an intriguing mystery, with shades of F. Scott Fitzgerald and du Maurier – and a good splash of romance – give this book a read!

Delightful story about a young woman's life, that changes overnight.

I have read more books by Julia, and I like her writing style very much. I love the flow of this book, at just the right pace, it took me from 'Eve's' first steps into a terrific journey... Great investment in the characters of this book pays out in the end, which has a huge surprise. Didn't see that coming!

Fundamentally this story is about love ❤️- the many different types of love and how they influence and impact the heroine Eve. The journey Eve finds herself upon is a roller coaster of heart wrenching moments and it’s difficult to put the book down half way through. I groaned, felt elated, cried and enjoyed each major reveal. A fabulous book of discovery and yes, Love. Characters wonderfully complex and crafted. A fab read. Thank you Julia

5.0 out of 5 stars Deceptively simple
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2024
A beautiful, deceptively simple but complex tale of a young woman who gets involved with a disparate group of privileged people and falls in love before the delicately balanced group falls apart.

The story's focus is Annaliese, the author who attracts people to her like a moth to a flame, but this is really young Eve's story, going from a humdrum existence to being inexplicably accepted into Annaliese's inner circle.

Basically, this story is really good. Everyone is damaged in some way, and we discover each story as the book goes on, and how they relate to Eve. The tragedies are deftly handled, and the love affairs even more so. It is a grown up love story with realistic characters who have as many faults as any real person, yet the story is compelling enough to want to keep turning the pages. I consumed this book in four evenings, reading late into the night, and didn't want to put it down.

This isn't the first book I've read of this author's and it won't be the last. Blake is a master storyteller and weaves worlds with words to create a tapestry of delight.
