the boy who loved Wicked Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,550 ratings

“The madness of love is the greatest of heaven’s blessings.” ~Plato

Day 1 of senior year at Denwin High was not supposed to end with my thoughts consumed by the new AP Philosophy teacher. I’d impatiently waited three years to take the course, but from the moment he strode in with his sad eyes that mirrored my own, I was intrigued by only him.

Dr. Sebastian Wicked.

Intrigue turned into obsession, and common interests set the stage for a tentative friendship with the enigmatic man. In time, every line put in place became blurred as what we shared sparked the flames of a forbidden affair. An affair that should've never been, a wrong that the universe sought to right.

There was only one possible outcome—we were both going to burn. Would our love rise up from the ashes? Or would it smolder in the ruins?

My name is Phoenix Michaelson, and I am the boy who loved Wicked.

Nothing feels better than burning for someone who wouldn't think twice about burning for you.

"I promise to love you without condition, to feed your mind as well as your heart. I promise to never take who you are and who you aren't for granted, and I promise to never hold your flaws against you. They say the more you love the more you suffer. Well, I would suffer unimaginable things for you, Phoenix."

When not writing, C.P. Harris can be found reading about the flawed, possessive characters often reflected in her own work. She prefers her love stories a little toxic, emotional, and with a happily ever after well worth the struggle it took to get there. Age-gap, taboo, student/teacher. And their beautiful story

Age-gap, taboo, student/teacher. And their beautiful story
"If someone had asked me to explain what triggered my interest in Mr. Wicked, what sent me crawling over the edge, it was his sadness. I fell in love with his sadness first." -Phoenix This is one of the most heartfelt love stories I've read! I don't know why I held off so long when I KNEW CP Harris does age-gap so well!! Phoenix is a high school Senior and is taking philosophy which is being taught by Sebastian Wicked. You could feel their connection from the moment they met. Their love for philosophy and using it in a way to express themselves was so uniquely done. It was a hard fought HEA. Phoenix needed to grow and find himself while Sebastian needed to clear the sadness that was taking over his life. They both struggled and my heart hurt for them during that time. I'm so happy they took that time to find themselves before reuniting and falling even more in love! Books don't usually make me cry-I'll admit to feeling really sad but that's usually it- however, CP Harris managed to get my heart to stop and my eyes get misty not once (end of entry #1) but twice (last few paragraphs of book). I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend listening to Liam DiCosimo bring Phoenix and ALL of his feelings alive along with Tim Paige as Sebastian in the audiobook!!

    5 valid and bright stars!!!

Oh, this book! Such passion, heartbreak and meaningful prose molded into a story of two destinies that come together, diverge and reconnect.

I can honestly state that I have never read a more entertaining book concerning two people of similar backgrounds that through every obstacle placed before them ultimately manage to secure each other's destinies and true love.

The plotlines, writing and characters were all so smoothly intermingled that my investment in Sebastian and Phoenix's lives brought me sheer and utter joy. And a whopping dose of longing for what they accomplished through tenacity and the unmitigated power of true love.

Beginning when Phoenix was a senior in high school and Sebastian Wicked was his philosophy teacher and concluding with Seb's resignation as professor and department head of Theology in college, the same college Phoenix attended, this tale describes in glorious and intimate detail their complicated developing relationship. Barrier upon barrier appear to mar that relationship, but through all of their obstacles, their unrelenting love and need for one another will not be denied.

I particularly enjoyed the author's injection of philosophical quotes from the greatest philosophers in our past to weave this story. As both protagonists share a love of these intellectual's writings, their inclusion plays a major role in their lives. And the people they manage to become.

If you cannot devine that I absolutely loved this book at this point, I have failed future readers as a reviewer. It is intellectually stimulating, deeply emotional and describes the true meaning of sacrificing oneself completely to attain their ultimate happiness and strengthen the bonds of love, despite all the dangers and pitfalls along their journey.

I enjoyed The Boy Who Loved Wicked. Overall, it is very well written in dual-perspective first person. However, it sometimes falls into the same trap as other books I’ve read in DPFP. Although Sebastian is twice as old as Phoenix, the characters are very similar in the way they talk and think. And as the book progressed, Harris didn’t tell us often enough who was doing the speaking. (Yes, each chapter begins with the character’s name, but because their speech is so similar, I sometimes forgot.) It is so easy to take care of this issue by just ascribing the dialog to one character or the other, from time to time.

This book is about love, the kind that many of us have been fortunate enough to enjoy sometime in our lives. Conflict is abundant too. The storyline is very interesting. It is different from anything I’ve ever read, though others might not agree with me here.

I recommend Wicked. But because of the conflict, it might not be for some.

This book is not a typical romance book that you should read just for the tropes. It’s so much more than that. This is truly nuanced and breathtaking. To open it up for any other reason than to have an incredible reader experience, is to cheapen the value and craftsmanship of this story.

Before we even get in, we are thrown into one of the most moving prologues/openers I’ve ever read. I was in tears by the end of that first chapter. The rest of the book is an absolute page turner that feels impossible to put down. The characters of Phoenix and Sebastian are so deep and real, I felt I could run into them at the store. The side characters are their own incredible feature and never a nuisance, but rather additional features you want more from. C.P. Harris is methodical in her writing and character creation, no word or phrase is arbitrary and everything is painstakingly thought out.

My struggle has been to not reread this immediately. This is a Top 5 books of 2021 and only one other book is sitting in that list currently. I am a harsh critic at times, I do not mince words, I don’t have the time nor do I want to develop carpal tunnel unnecessarily. So when I take the time to write a review like this it is because it was that good. It was that powerful.

If you’ve seen this book recommended over and over - there is a reason. There is an HEA, which I know is important to many. That’s not a spoiler as the author is clear about that. And the epilogues (because there are multiple) are incredible finishers to an outstanding book.

If you haven’t read this yet, I hope this review moves you to. If you haven’t read anything by C.P. Harris yet, then I hope this is the first of many.

I almost don't want to write this review because I am afraid that I am unable to put my thoughts into words that will do it justice. This book gutted me and stitched me back up, only to pull apart the wounds all over again. What an incredibly stunning masterpiece that has left my emotions in tatters and filled me up with something that is indescribable. The author's voice throughout the piece is luscious and I devoured the words like an animal starved for food and affection. Rarely do we get to view such a deep and heartfelt novel through the lense of a beautifully broken boy who truly makes the transformation into his own namesake. The love between Phoenix and Bash is the type of love that transcends time and space alone, an all encompassing celebration of the feeling itself.

This will definitely go down as one of the best books I have ever read. I was moved to tears in the heartache of love and loss, of self discovery and forgiveness, unconditional love and acceptance. It is beautiful, pristine, and exquisite. Delicate yet cutting. I put off reading this for a while so if you happen to stumble upon this review needing a reason to fully commit I hope that this will be all the convincing you need. I highly recommend it.

The pure brilliance of this book was almost an assault on my unassuming heart that just wanted to read an intense romance, looking for something and someone new.
C.P. Harris, I've discovered, is a terrific writer whose words about these two vulnerable men, I read raptured. I cried. I hoped. I loved.
This book is genius in how it wants its two characters Pheeny and Bash to emulate their philosophical heroes while teaching the readers; US, the same values. And boy did I learn a thing or two.
I want everyone to give this book a chance be cause it's so important in the lessons of love. It's faultless, flawless and yet all of those things, because that's how we learn and grow. It's more than a romance, it's a journey. After reading it, I feel like I've had an experience. And the story is one to stay with me a long time. I absolutely loved it!

The Boy Who Loved Wicked just WOW WOW WOW You really cannot miss out on this brilliantly crafted story. I'm totally blown away after reading this. I use the word crafted cause this has taken some serious talent and brilliance to craft this story. It has all of the feels but it also has some of the best writing I have read. This is an age gap story of Dr Sebastian Wicked (Professor) and Phoenix Michaelson (Student) BUT this is a totally unique love story. I honestly cannot even compare it to anything else I have read. It is such a stand out book by a relatively new author to me C.P. Harris. This book has become one of my all time favorites. I cannot say just how much I loved this book and is definitely a 5 star +++++ from me. You seriously need to read this book. I have now become a huge fan of this author.

I really enjoyed this a little philosophical romance. 🏳️‍🌈📚❤️

Phoenix is in love with philosophy because of his late dad philosophy professor.

    Now

Phoenix finally meets someone who is his match in all things philosophical. He can finally debate and question everything with someone, every aspect of Plato, Aristotle and Socrates...

Sebastian has his demons but debating with Phoenix makes him alive again. Yes there's a big age gap but Phoenix is beyond his years. Phoenix is his student but that won't stop them from falling in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written emotional roller coaster.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 24, 2024
Phoenix Michaelson idolised his philosophy professor father, who died when he was 10. Now he's a clever 18yr old student, following in his father's footsteps by taking a Philosophy class in high school.

The new Philosophy teacher is Sebastian Wicked, almost 20 years older, a traumatised, lonely, brilliant teacher, haunted by a very painful past and tied to a loveless marriage.

They meet, instantly connect with their love for philosophy, and this this is the story of how two lonely souls, at different stages of their lives come together.

The story is intelligently written, an emotional roller coaster and a tearjerker. There’s heartache, there is loss, there’s drama, suspense and there is love.

I had mixed feelings at times. There were a few steep uphill battles to climb, and some great sacrifices were made. The taboo subject of teacher/student was not repulsive but beautifully handled. The character development of both MCs and supporting cast beautifully developed.

    I loved the epilogue.

Another great book by C. P. Harris.

Update - I just finished reading the bonus chapters from the author's website and I can't stop smiling. Just awesome.
