“Ready to dance with your husband?”
Her smile was shy, but real, as she slipped her hand into mine.
I twirled her onto the dance floor amid the laughter. She nestled into me as we moved to the music. Once again, it struck me how well she fit to me—the way her head was the perfect height to tuck under my chin. I could smell her soft scent, and enjoyed the silk of her hair on my skin. I beamed as we spun around, our steps in sync.
I had chosen the perfect fake wife.

This book will bring out the feels. Sometimes stabby, sometimes sad, sometimes happy. The cast of supporting characters bring the Hero and heroine through their journey that can't help loving (most) of them. If you never read Melanie Moreland's novels, I highly recommend this novel. 5 out of 5 'love to hate him' stars.

The Contract
By Melanie Moreland
Richard, an high-flying advertising exec, an unrepentant tyrant to everyone around him, a man who despises everyone, especially his personal assistant, Katy. Katy, an all-suffering assistant, perfect at her job but unable to put her far too demanding boss in his place. She puts up with behavior that would have me telling my boss where to stuff it and send me running to Human Resources. But she has a reason for tolerating Richard’s attitude, an aunt with Alzheimer’s Disease, whose care Katy pays for. She can’t afford to be fired or to quit. Who’d ever dream these two opposites could ever fall in love?
When he doesn’t receive a coveted promotion, Richard decides to try to get a job at the only other major firm in the area. The problem is that the firm’s owner is family-oriented and would never hire Richard, due to his lack of stable personal relationships. Richard has to come up with a plan. Find a fiancé, a fake fiancé, and make the owner of the new firm believe it’s real. Who does he know who can fill the role? A woman who is loved by all who meet her, who can charm everyone, and is just the type to make anyone believe the romance is real? Katy, of course.
For Katy, this contract will help her support her aunt and improve the care her aunt receives. It will lighten the heavy burden of always trying to find the money to pay for the care. She despises Richard, but she can tolerate anything for a year, right?
So begins this wonderful story. Enemies, become friends, and then, maybe more. This sort of plot may have been done before, but never so well as in this delightful book by Melanie Moreland. The character development is believable in such a way, that I went from disliking Richard to adoring him, and from sort of sneering at Katy for putting up with him, to applauding the way she can take him on outside the job front, and put him in his place. The gradual change in their relationship took the exact right amount of time, not too fast, not too drawn out. We see it happen in ways that work absolutely, in ways I could see it happening with real people.
I love lots of characters in books, never content with just the two main protagonists, and this book has plenty of fun characters to satisfy me. The big engaging family who runs the new firm are delightful, people I’d love to know. They make the story better, as they interact with Richard and Katy. They help make this lovely romance richer and deeper with extra little details that, for me, take a story from good to great.
I’ve been reading Melanie’s work for a number of years now, and the contract is absolutely my favorite so far. She makes me want to smack Richard, then hug him. She makes me want to tell Katy to stand up to him, then applaud when she does. She makes me laugh, makes me angry, makes me smile. Everything a great story should make you feel. And she reminds me, as I’ve become cynical and scorn most romances, that love stories can still be wonderful things to read. I give my highest recommendation to The Contract. I only wish it could have gone on longer, because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2016My Impressions: 1st person narrative (ugh). However, my spirits lifted when I realized that it does shift between the hero and heroine occasionally. Thus, its not as restrictive as absolute 1st person. And the writer is quite direct and to the point…no rambling thoughts or boring tangents to muddle through (which is one of the reasons I normally avoid 1st person books). (Bravo!) A realistically nasty hero in Richard…but not so much that he can’t reform.
The Romance: The banter between these two was quite amusing and at times poignant…I cannot recall enjoying a bickering couple as much as Katherine and Richard. Since they were a hate turns to love pairing, there’s not a whole lot of immediately chemistry…their connection is built up, sort of ‘layered on’ as the storyline unfolded. The attraction grew, the tension spiked..until I just couldn’t wait for them to get together. No insta-love here. A nice, nuanced development of the romance.
Minor Beefs: Things got a bit sugary towards the end…and the wrap-up was a tad too neat. The entire book had a slightly pat feel to it. The romance part was excellent though, very well-developed, heartfelt, and completely convincing (Kudos). However, Richard’s workplace philosophy seemed to change too quickly…He went from being a soulless loner and corporate shark to a sharing, let’s-play-nice, teamwork guru overnight. His cut-throat attitude and competitive spirit vanished without a trace…at the very least, I expected him to have a few run-ins with his co-workers, some friction or something. Not sure I buy that part of his transformation.
Random Thoughts: I love a good opposites attract romance…which this is. Reformed villains make the best hero (in my opinion)….they fall hard!
Cliffhanger: None. A Stand alone.
The Verdict: Good read! I recommend it to all romance fans and contemporary romance readers. I will definitely give the next one in the series a glance when it comes out.

What an amazing read. Going from enemies to the ones. Once they understood each other’s past and the reasoning to accepting the offer of marriage, it was all on a road to love. Great storyline. Narration was awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous, tension-filled, and emotional
I wish I hadn't waited so long to read this book as I absolutely loved it!
"She's [f...] perfection. I couldn't stand her."
Richard VanRyan is a tyrant. He's emotionally dead or, at the very least, emotionally stunted. A man known for his blunt, almost cruel, tongue, and his ambitious, ruthless streak. His reputation preceded him. When he finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place, an almost unpalatable solution is suggested to him. However, he is desperate enough to consider it because it's a pretty genius answer to his dilemma.
"I hated being a PA. I especially hated being a PA for Mr VanRyan. I had never known anyone so cruel."
Katharine Elliott despises her job but she goes about it with dignity and no small amount of stoicism. She's in desperate need of the money and can't afford to be without it. When her hateful boss presents her with a new role, the lure of what the money would mean to her pushes her to accept it - against her better judgement.
"You aren't despicable. I think you're lost. You haven't let yourself feel."
As they work together to build a convincing facade to present to the world, their dynamics start to change little by little. Katharine's kind ways slowly break Richard's demeanour down, and for the first time in years, he begins to experience feelings that are alien to him, and he doesn't quite know what to make of them.
"I used every bit of frustration she made me feel to punish her into silence. Except it didn't feel like punishment. It felt like pleasure. Hot, pulsating pleasure."
God, this book really sucked me in! I love an enemies-to-lovers story - throw in a fake relationship, and I'm in heaven! The one thing I wasn't prepared for though was how emotional it was, which had me reaching for the tissues.
Richard was SUCH a nasty jerk! He lacked empathy and manners. He and Katharine couldn't have been more opposite in character. She was kind, giving and thoughtful. The way he treated her was truly terrible. However, when she showed him that she had bite to her character, I really loved that he liked that about her and was actually quite charmed by her. The change in their dynamic was fascinating to follow. Richard was a really hard nut to crack and Katharine somehow managed to chip through his shell to the man beneath. We caught glimpses of a more genuine and flirtatious man beneath the surface. Richard's journey throughout the story was amazing to witness and I absolutely loved how the story concluded.
Humorous, tension-filled, and emotional. Thoroughly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story
I love this kind of story that you can see the changes in the characters, you see them growing and becoming better people. The Contract gives you exactly that, Richard is a bastard in the beginning, the way he treats Katherine is terrible, but that makes the changes so much more significant, with a little love he becomes a real man. Katherine shows her strength and good heart so many times, she's a lovable character, you see the way she holds herself when Richard treats her so poorly, but her reasons for tolerating everything he sends her way are noble, she's loyal and loves with all her heart. Penny was a character that's impossible not to love, she's outspoken, happy and so good, I cried with her and for her.
The Contract is a book worth reading, I'm happy that I bought it, Malanie Moreland always brings us amazing books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thème classique - mais très bien écrit
