The Devil May Care
Rogues & Gentlemen Book 4

Dishonoured and ashamed, the ton's scandalous darling, 'Beau' the Marquess of Beaumont, is forced to flee England to escape debtor's prison. After a chance encounter, it appears Miss Millicent Sparrow is his only remaining friend, however unlikely. Miss Sparrow lives up to her name.

Damaged and terrified by her cousin's violent abuse, Milly is used to being overlooked and prefers it that way, until the desperation of her bleak world is gilded by rakishly handsome Beau's extraordinary friendship.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I read the first three books of this series and I loved each one. I had mixed feelings about purchasing this book because I wasn't sure I could like the Hero. I fell in love with Beau. I loved Milly and together the two made an amazing couple. There were times I worried if they'd ever get it right. I loved this book. It's a must read and a new favorite.~ Amazon customer review

Miss Sparrow’s lively letters help Beau through his banishment and when his father dies suddenly and Beau inherits the Dukedom, he seeks out his little bird. To his shock he finds a woman in despair and, moved by pity, he offers her the protection of his name by marriage.

But Milly becomes impossible to overlook, and the more Beau needs his wife, the less interested she seems in her gorgeous husband.
For this rake, getting a woman's attention has never been so complicated.

Warning: This book is liable to contain mild swearing and descriptive sex scenes!

The Rogues & Gentlemen series can be enjoyed as stand-alone novels or as part of the wider series. If the full series appeals, the suggested – but by no means essential - reading order would be:

• Book 1: The Rogue

• Book 5.5: Winter's Wild Melody

This is my second book of the series and is a stand alone. Oh, it is rare, where an author gives you both strong H/h. Lately I've ran into women author's who seem intent on making the h "B", with no redeeming qualities. But, not in this story!

I enjoyed their talks and letter's back and forth it really gave you an insight to their true character's. There romance builds slowly which was another plus for me. I dislike when lust come before the romance, but not here. Our h leaves the H (and rightly so), but I felt she gave in to fast and the only reason I had with this story.

They both brought out the best qualities in each other and their backgrounds will tug at your heart. There is some suspense, and interesting dialogue that held my interests.

The lovemaking is cold shower time but full of passion (and description), but not erotic for me at least. I have to care for my character's to not mind the lovemaking. We do get HEA, no cliffhanger and no cheating (but almost). I have signed up for this author's newsletter because I enjoy how she pulls you into her stories.

I am not going into the premise, as many have described it, just what you may get out of reading this story. (ljb)

On the positive side, the characters, even the secondary ones, are well-developed and interesting. The plot is complicated enough to keep the readers interest, but not so complex that it requires overmuch energy to follow. I genuinely enjoyed the story, and did not feel like I'd jumped into the middle of it despite not having read all the prior books in the series.

There are a few redundancies very early in the book, and way too many references to the butter yellow walls. I did get a little tired of two people afraid for half the book to actually talk to one another. And I did think it seemed very unlikely that Milly would go from frightened innocent to sex-starved temptress in 48 hours - graphic prints or no graphic prints.

Fnally, I don't know much about epilepsy, but I will say I was a bit skeptical that people die from it the way Edward did.

There are many things I like about this book and its characters. I must say first off how well-written it is.

The hero started out on the precipice of reaping what he sowed. He was already in the process of outgrowing his wicked ways. The heroine was in situation where she needed rescuing. They meet and develop a friendship despite time and distance. So we have beautiful character development. Their story actually reminds me of a Lisa Kleypas book but in a good way and not a copy cat sort of way. I love how the book focused also on the inner thoughts of the hero. There was a wonderful balance of romance, intrigue, transformations, reformations, reconciliation and steam (there were sexy scenes that added to the enjoyment of the romance overall). I love how the hero exerted effort to really pursue the heroine and win her over. And I love the epilogue.

This is either my second or third rereading and I’m still enjoying the book.

The first part of the book is the best – I definitely identified with the h.

It’s highly influenced by Georgette Heyer (which is a very good thing), especially by Friday’s Child: the Tiger tries to steal the H’s watch and is distracted by calming a runaway horse; his name is Jimmy rather than Jason.

I’ve found few anachronisms, although some of the sentences are rather informal for the Regency era. For example, “Oh, very well,” she replied. … “But if you please in the parlor, I’m sure you don’t wish the household to listen in on you.” Georgette phrased it “don’t show the porter that face, if you please! You have advertised your displeasure to enough people already.’

I must praise Ms. Leech for developing her own style, rather than copying Georgette’s.

One paragraph I objected to read, “Well I can hardly expect you to protect me from the women can I, …” There are several missing commas.

Notice that my complaints about the novel are small grammatical/conversational ones, and I gave it five stars overall.

It started really good. The interaction between the hero and heroine was amusing and somewhat heartwarming. Regardless that it’s because of the storyline, it’s refreshing to note that the heroine was already married when she first slept with her husband. The review lost a star due to the less than believable reaction of the lady the morning after. Who leaves a husband in bed to go visit and talk to a woman with loose morals because one is scared of losing the husband after a night of passion? Then there’s a few issues in the story that are not so clearly concluded. But as a whole, it’s a good book that compliments the previous books in the series.

I was a bit backwards about this series. I started with book 10 and have bounced around a bit. The older books in this series lack that special something the newer ones have. Flaming June in particular has wonderful layered characters. Maybe the author just came into her own idk but the difference is there.
The Devil May Care is a continuation of the third book and features the 'Villian' of the last book, Beau and his little plain Sparrow Milly. Overall I enjoyed their slowish burn but when they finally came together it felt rushed.
All in all the older books in the series lack the depth and character development of later installments but I like the obvious evidence of this authors growing voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Excellent Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 22, 2021
Well Written and an enjoyable book. This is 'Beau' Beaumonts and Millicent Sparrows story. We had met Millie in book 3, a down trodden and abused young woman who was at the mercy of her bullying cousin, Millie suffered from 'fits' whenever upset or stressed and she had an episode at a ball and was helped by Beau. Millie had met Beau years previously unbeknown to him and had loved him ever since, so when she had a chance to speak to him she grabbed the opportunity, and when Beau escaped to France to escape his debts she sets up a correspondence with him. On his return he is so appalled to see how badly Millie is treated by her cousin that he marries her to protect her, it is supposed to be a marriage of convenience but doesn't work out that way, and the following story is, to my mind truly magical. Even in book 3 when Beau was being a baddie I had a soft spot for him, and in this book he and Millie, who although not overly beautiful, was a rare jewel, who was kind, clever and treated most people with respect bought out the best in Beau. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic author!

I love this genre and this author always delivers. If you're looking for bodice ripping action in the first chapter with no character development....move along. This isn't that kind of book or that kind of author. Oh no. This book builds and builds and when the smutty action arrives get your local firestation on speed dial. You'll need it. That being said, there are enough twists and turns in the story to keep you on the edge of your seat and second guessing yourself along the way.

I really loved this story. Miss Sparrow is a victim of abuse who strikes up a genuine friendship with the Marquis of Beamont. From friendship love blossoms.
A very enjoyable read from start to finish, and riveting throughout. There's always a sense of excitement when you first starting reading a regency novel. This book delivers. The story is intriguing and entertaining. The characters are endearing and well developed, and the plot keeps the reader's attention and interest. Two thumbs up for this must read.

Throughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

The tale lightly touches on a number of issues relate to women and their status in the Recency period and on the issue of epilepsy or fits and how society viewed such things. Has some highly racy scenes that are well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh Regency romance.
Reviewed in Australia on November 11, 2019
I had become a little jaded with Regency romances and not read one for a while but the blurb to this story caught my attention. It’s promise was certainly fulfilled and I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. There were shades of Georgette Heyer in its elements and she was a beloved author of mine. Milly is such a lovely character and very simpatico. Beau, of course, is the essence of a hero. Although he is taken by Milly’s intellect he is still a gentleman of his time and has an authoritarian streak in him. His insistence of a marriage of convenience from the beginning was his downfall in the end. I loved the story but be aware that there are some explicit love scenes.
