- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016What a nice, refreshing take on a traditional historical fiction! I absolutely loved how the action starts in 2013 Manhattan and then continues into the fourteenth century in Scotland, with main character, Coira, desperately trying to understand what had happened that she suddenly found herself in a medieval castle with its Laird, strangely resembling a recent client of her travelling agency.
The way that the author played on those contrasts between the present and the past, and how masterfully the growing attraction between the two characters was described made this story a joy to read. Bits of history dotted throughout the novel provided necessary authenticity, together with vividly described costumes, ways of speech and traditions of the Scottish society in that time.
The magical element combined with the time-travel idea to reunite with one’s beloved to break a spell was also quite a refreshing touch, making this historical fiction a unique tale that you won’t be able to put down once you start. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017Throw in some magic into the Highlands and I'm sold! After reading the premise, I really wanted to dive into this book. Like I said, magic + highlands = LOVE!!! Ju Ephraime didn't fail to deliver. She did not stall the inevitable. Her writing was fast paced and honestly, I could not put the book down (in my case, my Kindle).
It's been quite sometime since I read a romance book and well, after reading this one, I wonder why I stopped. It had everything - a feisty heroine, a Highlander warrior, magic, love and steamy scenes! Everything about Coira and Alasdair's romance was magic. I only wish there was more to their magical backgrounds and how Coira ended up in the 14th century, and if Dair continues to be immortal. Would have been nice to know who poisoned him and what happened to his 'mither' too. Other than that, this is a quick and fun read for romance lovers.
Oh, next to the main characters, I enjoyed whenever Tristan was in the scenes. Any chance for a Tristan story? :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017I enjoyed this novel, especially the story of love between a highlander and his fated woman. I'm a sucker for a Scottish brogue and kilt, since I first read Outlander years go, but this book fell a little flat for me.
The story itself is wonderful. The time travel was original and a lot of the elements like druids, scrying, magic, and fae were all enjoyable. Unfortunately it was the execution that fell short. The writing was repetitious at times, stilted, and several of the opening chapters were choppy. I don't think the author is a poor writer, in fact I think she had a very imaginative story to share, but her prose felt forced, awkward on more than one occasion, and the descriptions were at times almost textbook. I found myself skipping ahead often to get to the dialogue and scenes between the two MC.
I really wanted to love this book. In some ways, I did. However, the execution of the ending was also a bit odd. This is only my opinion, as all reviews are, and I'm sure many will love this book. I am willing to read more of the author's work and I would not want to turn anyone away from a great story. I'm left torn and wishing I could give more stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016This is indeed an excellent historical romance. I was drawn into the story from the intro. I love the way the author describes the highlander and the way she had his old Scottish accent coming through in the dialogue. The interaction between the two main characters, Alasdair and Coira was sizzling from the first chapter, but the author plays it along until I wanted to say, enough already. I’ve read a couple of books by this author, and I know she writes steamy, passionate scenes. I was expecting it in this book, and she didn’t disappoint. The scenes were scorching, the kilt wearing highlander came through loud and clear, even the younger brother, Tris was hot. I hope she gives him his own story. But all scorching scenes aside, I love the history bit and the dialogue when the Scots communicated with each other. I could close my eyes and hear them, that’s how real the entire thing was. Great job, Ephraime. Lovers of medieval romance will not be disappointed in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2017This was a great historical romance, romp, fun read, but, it was also respectful to historical facts and settings.
What a great concept to transport someone back to 14th century Scotland. NO more spoilers from me.
There was great chemistry between the two main protagonists. It was a lovely romantic tale but I also enjoyed the depictions of Scotland in that earlier historical period. I could smell the heather, and feel the dark atmosphere of Scotland's rugged countryside.
Ju Ephraime's books are always entertaining and this one didn't disappoint.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017This story was better than I expected. I picked it up because the intro to it sounded interesting. I am very happy with the story and enjoyed it very much. It is very interesting how the author used the time line travel concept, one that I have read only a few times before in this way. It is very believable and kept the story moving along. It also had a good deal of Scottish history which added a lot to the story.
Spoiler, sorta. The only thing that would have made this story even better would have been for them to return to the 21st Century. Now that would have been a real unique twist.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2016I love time travel stories! The fish out of water aspect is so fun to watch! But there was also destiny at play here, and the draw between Alasdair and Coira was undeniable for each of them. For me, the best part of any story is the romance, and this novel doesn’t disappoint. The time travel has a really cool magical aspect behind it—I liked learning about Alasdair’s background and there are other secrets to uncover as well. But at its heart is Alasdair and Cora and their connection. Can Coira overcome losing the world she knows to embrace a new life?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rip-Roaring Trip Through Time
The Elusive Highlander may stand in its own category, mixing the unlikely bedfellows of historical Highland romance with modern time travel. But perhaps the greatest takeaway for me was the futility of war. Not a new message, but certainly delivered in a unique package.
Coira Ainsley, the main female character, is from the 21st century. She’s a successful travel agent, which is somewhat ironic considering that she is about to experience the trip of her life. And yet she is also of the 14th century, as she is the eternal soulmate of Alasdair Campbell, the Laird of Inveraray Castle, the holdout of the Scottish Clan Campbell. His betrothed is of enemy Clan MacDougall, and it is because of their planned matrimonial union that Alasdair is poisoned. Obviously to some members of these ever-warring clans the suggestion of a Campbell actually tying the knot with a MacDougall is justification enough for murder.
Alasdair’s mother attempts to reverse the injustice of her son’s homicide through magic. But she unwittingly dooms him to wander through the centuries somewhat aimlessly, until he is reunited with his soulmate, with whom he does meet up again in 21st century Manhattan. This reintroduction sends them both hurtling back through time to the 14th century and the Scottish Highlands, where they first met.
Coira, who firmly identifies with the only home she feels she has known in the 21st century and misses her ailing father, seeks at first to escape her doom and undo the results of the time-traveling escapade. She is confused about the identity of this kilt-clad, red-haired giant, who is reminiscent of the man she recently met in the 21st century but who clearly identifies with his life as a Scottish Laird. She begs Alasdair to help her return, but he is helpless to assist her as he does not understand what has happened to them anymore than she does. Unlike her, he quickly fits back into his challenging role as Laird of Inveraray Castle, as if his days of wandering through time had never happened.
After a while, Coira comes to not only accept her fate but embrace it. She realizes that Alasdair, or simply Dair, is the man she is destined to love, and that her life in 14th century Scotland can be even richer than her Manhattan life. She continues to miss her father, but that situation, too, is solved toward the end of the book.
Coira, as a woman of the 21st century, possesses the advantage of hindsight and is able to see the abject pointlessness of the Scottish clan wars, as well as the bloody wars with the English for Scottish independence. She knows full well that the loss of life is all for naught, as history bears witness. Unfortunately, Dair doesn’t seem to possess that knowledge and continues fighting, much to Coira’s anxiety as she grows more in love with him with each passing day.
Along with the interesting, twisty plot are some steamy love scenes. So not the best novel for those who read only sweet romances—but definitely an entertaining read for those who like a lot of spice mixed in with the history.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner...
Filled with the magic of the fae, and the charms of Middle Age Scotland, The Elusive Highlander was an enjoyable read that had me turning the pages.
I really liked the betrayal of the Coira Ainsley — she is very much a 21st Century girl who finds herself stranded in 14th Century Scotland. Her character was very believable, and her agony at leaving her father behind was heartbreaking, The attraction between Coira and Alasdair was smoking!! Their relationship was beautifully portrayed — well done!
I didn't know whether to give this book a 5* or a 4*. I have gone with a 4.5* because there were a few inconsistencies in the story. I wish Ephraime would decide how Coira's mother died, was it a car accident? or did she die in her bed because of an illness? I don't know?!! I would also like to have read more about why Alasdiar was immortal and what that meant for his and Cora relationship. At times, I was jarred out of the story by the sudden history lesson. I understand the reason why Ephraime did this, but I thought this could have been worked into the story better.
These are only small issues, however, and I did enjoy the story. It was a rapid page turner, and I read it in one sitting, which says it all really.
I Recommend

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
I live near Berwick upon Tweed/Scottish Borders which is why I was first drawn to this story and I love romance novel so ELUSIVE HIGHLANDER fitted the bill ideally. Scottish history is very in depth and I thought the author had researched this thoroughly touching on the Templars and Robert the Bruce. I thought the two main characters Alasdair and Coira worked well together and had good chemistry. Coira is quite an independent woman yet troubled with issues at home, while Alasdair is a strong, sexy red headed male warrior type. The story reminded me of Outlander as it flicked between the different centuries. My only criticism is I felt the "Scottish Brogue" which runs constantly throughout the book, a little grating at times but that is my own personal opinion. Overall, a well written, easy read with a bit of everything, history, magic, steamy romance and time travel. Certainly something you could put your feet up, relax and really just enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars History with an erotic twist and a touch of fantasy
Ju Ephraime has ventured into historical fiction with great success. The majority of The Elusive Highlander is set in the fourteenth century during one of Scotland's wars for independence, led by Robert the Bruce: with the exception that the author explains at the end of changes that she made "in the name of love", the history recounted is accurate.
In the name of love is equally accurate. After Coira "falls through time" from her twenty-first century career girl life in Manhattan and is captured by the laird, Alisdair, sexual tension stretches like an elastic thread until the story borders on erotica. The author's fans, of whom I have been one since finding the completely different Chasing Love, will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really different time travel novel!
A really different time travel novel!
I loved the interaction between the characters in this book and the way the author described the scenes. They really came to life as the story unfolded. The castles even felt properly draughty! The magical element was a nice touch too. I felt that could actually happen in this era and with these highlanders. I also liked the way Alasdair didn't really know that he had time travelled too. His long life must have been somewhat confusing if he'd known and remembered everything that had happened to him. Nice touch that he was still in his own setting as well as time travelling.
A very enjoyable read.
