The Fire Within: An Elemental Warrior Series (Elemental Academy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,872 ratings

A single mistake has far-reaching consequences for a carpenter's apprentice.

With the threat of rogue elementals escaping from the element bond and fear of another attack by the Draasin Lord, life at the edge of Terndahl is difficult for Tolan. Without any magic of his own, he spends his days working as a carpenter’s apprentice. When an elemental attack draws the attention of the Inquisitors from the Academy, everything changes.

A mistake brings Tolan into the Terenhall Academy, a prestigious training ground for powerful shapers, but it’s a world where he doesn’t belong. Unlike his classmates, he can’t control the magic of the element bonds.

As elementals continue to escape the bond and attack the Academy, Tolan finds himself in the middle of danger. With no shaping ability, he fears there’s something more to the attacks. Now he must save the Academy and find a way to stop these attacks—and find the one behind them.

Prepare to Embark Upon a Wonderful Journey!
This is one of the GREATEST book series I have ever read. As an avid and discerning reader, I consider my tastes to be simple. As long as the author spins a good tale, I consider it a win for both parties. However, I was by no means prepared for the literary greatness I was to partake of! I was blown away by the vivid world, the depths of the characters, and the forcefulness in which each word kept my eyes drawn to the story as it unfolded. If you are looking at beginning a new series or are maybe desperately searching for an author with the ”IT” factor going on, then you are in the right place. Do yourself a favour and buy this book!

By the Amazon summary blub I expected this to be the typical trope where the worst student discovers a secret that makes instead over night the best but at least in book one that is not the case. I also expected this to be more of a battle school like you find in Anime and again this is not the case. This turned out to instead be more a Harry Potter without muggles and Harry kind of sucks and is not famous. This does not make It bad if that is what you are looking for, I just was not when I picked it up. The character development and world building is a not light but there is enough for a book one and keeps the story lighter too.

From a master story teller, Mr. Holmberg, comes The Fire Within about a boy named Tolan, and his ever present uncertainty and insecurity as to whether or not he truly has the capability of becoming an elemental bond shaper. He subsequently tried out for the selection to attend Terenhall Academy where he could learn the skills to become a master shaper. I immediately connected with Tolan as he reminded me a little about myself. I have the tendency to second guess myself and am not very confident about my own abilities. I so enjoyed the other characters in this book as they each played off of one another, some trying to support each other. Of course we have the evil ones which I also enjoyed as what would a good book be without the tension that they create. Also, I appreciated the world building that Mr. Holmberg so imaginatively created and depicted for we the readers to envision. As I stated in the beginning of my review, I believe Mr. Holmberg to be a master story teller. He has written so many books I can hardy keep up with reading all of them. They are all totally his own creations as there is no other books like them. I once became a kindle unlimited subscriber just so I could read as many books of his as I could. I am seriously considering resubscribing. I also was privileged to receive an Audible code to listen to this book. It was narrated by John Pirhalla who did a wonderful job of creating all the different voices to the characters. Even though it takes almost twice as long to listen to a book rather than read it, I found it was easy to multitask while listening. Since we are sheltering in place and no longer able to run so many errands outside the home, I found I could get a lot done around the house while I listened. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

This book is about Tolan a young carpenter's apprentice, who is without family. His parents were taken when he was younger and he was taken in to be an apprentice to a carpenter. But his master does have elemental magic and Tolan does not, so things are harder for him. His best friend does have magic and goes to the school in town and the unexpected happens when Tolan goes to the choosing to support his friend and ends up being chosen to go to the academy to train. How he gets along and what happens to him is quite an adventure. So to find out how a young man without magic gets accepted you will have to read this book. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the others in this series to find out how things go for Tolan and his new friends. I recommend this book and for those of us who like magic, it is a great read.

This is only the first book in the series, but I feel like this is a mediocre book. The story is REALLY slow, barely building. Overall, the main character is a little too 'milk toast'. Too much self doubt, too much reluctance to move forward, and too much "I am a failure, I suck, I can't do anything".
I like the idea of the magic system, but it isn't drawn out or explained. They 'Feel Out' and 'Pull on the Bonds' of an element, but thats pretty much all that is taught in the 'Elemental Academy'. Nothing else is explained or fleshed out.
The story is a little interesting, but ti drags out through the entire book, sl slow.

I didn't like the dialog at all. There was a lot of-

    Tolan felt the earth shake
    "Is it true?" she asked
    "Is what true?" Tolan responded
    "Did you see it?"
    "Did I see what?"
    "Did you see an elemental?
"Did I see an Elemental? Yes, I saw it. I saw an elemental"
    "What kind of elemental?"
"What kind of Elemental? A Fire Elemental"
"What was the Fire Elemental doing?"
    "The Fire Elemental was burning"
"It was burning? What was it burning?"
    "Trees. And Wood."

Although not naturally gifted in the use of elemental magic, Tolan finds himself enrolled in The Elemental Academy of Magic when just trying to be a good, supportive friend. I enjoy the unexpected consequences that occur because of one decision made: a life direction change, wanting to fit in, to be like the other students, but having to find his own method of achieving the same (or similar) results...for me, the story a bit slow in progression, but overall a good, easy, engaging read.

Mr. Holmberg is one of those authors worthy for your “keepers list”. This book, which is book 1 of the Elemental Academy series, is one such example. Fascinating story, engaging and entertaining characters, and writing that is so gifted that you’ll be grabbed into this world from page 1 and never let go. I’m on to book 2!!

Enjoyed this book very much. It had shades of Harry Potter in that he is at an academy and has two friends, a girl and a boy. He also has an enemy and is uncertain as to whether the masters at the academy are actually on his side. However, that is where the similarity ends. I loved the plot and the elementals. Looking forward to the next book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Plot similar to Harry Potter

I cant help but find comparison of the plot with Harry Potter. Ferrah, Tolan and jonas being similar to Hermoine, Harry and Ron. The institute of magic. The draasin lord similar to Voldemort but probably righteous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Magical Tale
Reviewed in Canada on March 23, 2020
I picked this book up to read because I have been enjoying his series on dragon misfits. I wanted a light, energy filled read that would not be boring and I was not disappointed. This book is a great introduction to a world that used magic in very amazing ways. Elementals are conjured up, magic is made and disasters happen to a group of young people who are part of the student body of an elemental academy where they practice conjuring and shaping elemental forces into various beings. My middle grandchild has first dibs on who gets to read it next. Magic is used to control forces of nature in fantastic ways. Very suitable for youth readers who like adventure and intrigue in a fast paced setting. I can enthusiastically recommend this series to my grandkids, but I get to read them first!

A really fun book and I’ll be reading the rest of the series, but it could have used a pass from an editor.
