A captivating dual timeline romance set in Cornwall! Perfect for fans of Sarah Burton, Stacey Halls, Jessie Burton and Kate Mosse.
Two centuries apart, two lonely women seek a place to call home…
Cornwall, England, 2015
Nomadic project manager Anna Pritchard has arrived in the village of Porthnevek to oversee the construction of a trendy new glamping site. But with many members of the local community strongly opposed to the development, she quickly finds herself ostracised and isolated.
Seeking to ease her loneliness, Anna begins volunteering at a nearby National Trust house in Trelissick, once owned by the aristocratic Daniell family. In her new role, Anna soon feels her attachment to both Porthnevek and Trelissick deepening. And as she spends more and more time steeped in local history, it seems that the past and the present are beginning to collide…
Belgium, 1815
After losing her brother in the Battle of Waterloo, French army seamstress Thérèse Ruguel is taken to London by war artist Thomas Chalmers, becoming his reluctant muse. But with Thomas’s mother unhappy with the arrangement, Thérèse is soon sent to Cornwall as a lady’s maid to Elizabeth Daniell, a kindly relative of the Chalmers family.
Able to speak only a little English — and with the other servants suspicious of her — Thérèse feels lost and alienated. And when she discovers her brother may still be alive, she must decide whether to continue with her new life in England, or brave the dangerous journey back to her homeland…
What became of Thérèse? Can Anna unearth the ghosts of the past?
And has Anna finally found where she belongs…?

About the author

Thank you for taking the time to visit my author page. If you are a reader of contemporary women's fiction who likes their romance with a big twist of mystery and suspense then you've come to the right place.
If you have taken the time and trouble to post a review of one of my books, then thank you so much. Feedback from readers (good or bad) means a great deal.
My first dual timeline romantic mystery was published by Sapere Books last summer and another will follow in 2023. The Forgotten Maid is the first Cornish Echoes Timeshift Mystery and tells the story of two lonely women who arrive in Cornwall two centuries apart, one in the Poldark era and one in the present day. Expect tin mines, smugglers, gracious houses and close coastal communities.
I have also written two haunting contemporary romances looking back to World War Two for Sapere Books. Endless Skies is about archaeologist Rachel has a habit of forming disastrous relationships, but as she starts digging the site of a tragic World War Two accident and befriends octogenarian Esther, could a love story from the past hold lessons for her too?
"It's not easygoing, but it is lovely and almost impossible to put down. And when you get that empty feeling after the book ends, because you don't want it to end, you know it's a good book." Natalie Normann
"Historical, romantic, realistic and engaging, Endless Skies provides fabulous entertainment." Linda's Book Bag
Another You tells the story of Marie Johnson, who feels her dreams have been shattered, but commemorations surrounding the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day become the catalyst for change she never could have imagined.
"Cable's writing is fresh and vivid. An evocative and thought-provoking story." Rosanna Ley
"The past and present intertwine with a war story set in beautiful Studland Bay." Angela Petch
My first novel, The Cheesemaker's House, was published by Matador in September 2013 and tells the story of Alice, who moves to Yorkshire following the breakdown of her marriage and meets her new neighbours from the present and the past. It was a finalist in the Alan Titchmarsh Show's People's Novelist competition and won Words for the Wounded's independent book of the year award in 2015.
"I really loved the authorial voice - it really drew me in. But more than that I loved the fact that the initial mystery posed is one that I could not think of a possible solution for, so that really got me hooked." Sophie Hannah
"The gift here is to make you want to read on." Jeffery Archer

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023Anna signs on as a lady's maid having lost her family in the war. Mrs Daniell treats her well and she enjoys her job. There are however some nefarious characters in the community although she finds herself attracted to one of them...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2021Gosh, I forgot how much I love dual time-period storylines, and Jane Cable’s The Forgotten Maid has rekindled that love affair. It’s the story of Anna Pritchard, in the present, and Thérèse, in the early nineteenth century, both of whom have little to no family and are looking for somewhere to call home. Both also find themselves in Cornwall, Anna as a project manager opening a new recreation site, and Thérèse as a maid for a prominent family. Each of them find themselves longing for a connection in the world to feel a little less alone. When Anna begins to dig deeper into the history of the area, she learns of Thérèse and begins to wonder who she was, what became of her, and if they maybe have a lot in common even 200 years apart.
There’s so much to love about this book… the wonderfully researched history of Cornwall and the mining industry during the time period, the vivid descriptions of a wild, rugged landscape, and the character development was top notch. There was a little bit of everything here - mystery, history, romance, and a touch of supernatural. All-in-all, a highly enjoyable read!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Sapere, and Jane Cable for the opportunity to read an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Hoping to see this on many “must read” lists this fall!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2023I almost always recognize a book I will enjoy from the first page… a certain writing style and use of descriptive words captures my imagination! “The Forgotten Maid” is one of those books! Great characters, dialogue, and a satisfying conclusion.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021I enjoy Jane Cable’s dual time books, and was delighted to see the new book. The Forgotten Maid.
The book opens with Anna Pritchard moving to Cornwall to set up a glamping site in a beautiful cliffside town, the only problem, the locals are less than enthusiastic. To take her mind off the drama Anna volunteers at a local National Trust property, Trelissick. While volunterring at Trelissick, Anna is given a role to play for their holiday tours. She is assigned the role of a French maid during the early 19th century. She is surprised to find out that there was an actual French maid named Therese Ruguel that her character is based on. Her curiosity is piqued.
In 1815 we follow the story of Therese, a young woman who followed her brother to the battlefield of Waterloo where he was lost. She is then taken to England by artist Thomas Chalmers, where she reluctantly becomes his muse. Thomas’ mother is unhappy with this situation and arranges for Therese to become the companion and lady’s maid of her relative Elizabeth Daniell, mistress of Trelissick, Therese must decide if she can make a life for herself in Cornwall, or if she should try to return to France where her old life is gone.
This is where the stories merge, Anna in 2015 and Therese in 1815. I really enjoyed both time periods and the way both women took control of their lives, or tried to.
This is a good dual time story, with wonderful descriptions of Cornwall and life in the early 19th century with all the dramas that the Napoleonic Wars created. If you have not given Jane Cable’s books a try, give this one a try, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks to Netgalley, Sapere books and Jane Cable for the chance to read and review this book
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021I was in two minds whether to give this three or four stars, but I've gone with the higher rating because I did enjoy the two stories, although I didn't think they were really connected in the way I prefer in novels of this genre, apart from the location. I enjoyed Therese's story more than Anna's, as it seemed to have more emotion to it. Possibly it was the difference between the first and third-person narration, but I can't quite identify why I felt that way. But for good, escapist reading you can't go too far wrong with this book. My thanks to Sapere Books for the opportunity to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2021I received a complimentary copy from Sapere Books. I leave an honest review with, as usual, no spoilers and no simple plot synopsis.
I have always had a fondness for dual storyline books, where the timelines of both stories are somehow tied. Cable does an excellent job weaving Anna's and Therese's storylines so that they flow, yet are distinct. The landscape plays as much of a role in the book, which I enjoyed as well. Both women's storylines revolve around it. The landscape had echoes of Poldark and was described quite well.
Both women are fully fleshed out and the reader feels empathy for their situations. It is not apparent what the plot twists will be in each woman's storyline, which kept me reading as well. I finished this book in two days, but had to go to bed before writing my review! I appreciated that only one character was fully bad, and a minor one at that; characters were, well, human.
I would read another book by Cable. She has a gift for storytelling and setting the scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Engrossing Read!
I’ve long considered Jane Cable the Queen of the dual timeline, and in The Forgotten Maid, she doesn’t disappoint.
This is a beautifully intertwined story of two timelines and two women trying to establish their place in their respective worlds. Though their lives and situations were completely different, and not just because of the 200-year divide, there was a beautiful, if sometimes melancholy, symmetry to their stories.
Ms Cable’s writing is so immersive, you find yourself walking alongside Anna as she paces the cliff paths and beaches, monitors the development site or strolls into The Tinners to share a bevvy with the locals.
Her depiction of Regency England is excellent, and the depth of her research ripples throughout the sections set in 1815/16 as daintily as the winter sun dances on the sea.
The comparisons of the two locations, separated by 200 years, were fascinating and to a Cornwall-lover like me, were the icing on the cake of a delicious story.
If you love dual timeline novels, then this is must-read for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars absorbing read
The more I read this story, the more I was absorbed in this tale across two timelines. The characters were carefully drawn and the author showed good knowledge and research into the history of the area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, beautiful novel
Set in Cornwall in the Regency era and 2015, we move from Thérèse’s world to Anna’s: Thérèse is a French maid and Anna is employed to set up a glamping sight. Both protagonists are warm characters suffering a sense of loss and longing. Cable artfully weaves in the link between the past and the present and tangles the reader in the mystery of this time shift novel. I was hooked from the first chapter when Thérèse’s spirit is left fluttering in the novel, waiting to be discovered. The ethereal quality in Cable’s writing is both haunting and believable. Clever twists and turn in the plot kept me captivated, and I adored the emotional parallel between the two characters. Poetic, accomplished writing – another triumph for Jane Cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing and captivating read.
I enjoyed this dual timeline novel set in the present and early nineteenth century, Cornwall. As you might expect from Jane Cable whispers of the past are intertwined with the present. I was captivated by the protagonists in both time periods and their stories, though I was particularly intrigued by Thérèse (the forgotten maid). I was drawn to her character and hoped her strength would prevail over the increasing difficulties she faced. In the present day, however, it was Anna’s love interest who fascinated me. I enjoyed getting to know and understand him more as the story progressed. Cornwall past and present are brought to life by the author’s evocative descriptions of the setting. The Forgotten Maid is an intriguing, captivating read.
