The Hideaway (Lavender Shores Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 322 ratings

Lavender Shores’s resident tattoo artist, Connor Clark, looks the part—six foot six, musclebound, and covered in ink—and most definitely doesn’t blend in. Grafted into the Bryant family as a teenager to escape his abusive father, the Bryants saved his life, but Connor has never truly felt a part of the founding family royalty. And if his heart’s desire were revealed, it would betray everything the Bryants have done for him.

Micah Bryant was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He’s always had everything he ever wanted—save the one he desires most. Even moving to New York City for a few years didn’t dampen his passion. Not that Micah had expected it to. He’s known his destiny since he was nine years old, the moment it had walked through his door.

After years of longing, years of secrets and stolen moments of passion and love, Connor weakens enough to allow the town to see how he feels, and let the Bryants know his love for Micah is anything but brotherly. But no sooner had the decision been made than Connor’s biological family returns and shatters it all. Still, Micah holds on to the belief that their romance was written in the stars, but maybe he’d been wrong all those years...

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Rosalind Abel grew up tending chickens along side her sweet and faithful Chow, Lord Elgin. While her fantasy of writing novels was born during her teen years, she never would have dreamed she’d one day publish steamy romances about gorgeous men. However, sometimes life turns out better than planned.

In between crafting scorching sex scenes and helping her men find their soul mate, Rosalind enjoys cooking, collecting toys, and making the best damn scrapbooks in the world (this claim hasn’t been proven, but she’s willing to put good money on it).

She adores MM Romance and the power it has to sweep the reader away into worlds filled with passion, steam, and love. Rosalind also enjoys her collection of plot bunnies, and welcomes new fuzzy ones in her home all the time, so feel free to send any adorable ones her way.

In The Hideaway, we get the story of Micah and Connor ... the two Bryant brothers. Not biological brothers, but Connor Clark was enfolded by the Bryant family when he was 13 and escaped from his abusive uber-religious family. Gilbert Bryant considers Connor his brother, but over the years nine-year-old Micah Bryant goes from hero worship to falling in love with Connor.

As the story begins, we learn that Connor and Micah desperately love each other ... but how on earth do you tell your family, your friends, heck all of Lavender Shores, that the Bryant "brothers" are soul mates, and lovers, and dream of a life together? Rosalind Abel carefully crafts this nuanced relationship, full of doubt on Connor's part of depriving Micah of a life in the limelight as a violin virtuoso in NYC. Over the years they have each struggled with revealing everything, but when Connor's younger brother Moses comes into their lives, their plans are placed on the back burner once again.

I struggled with The Hideaway in the beginning because so much is unknown, but as Connor and Micah's story slowly unfolds, the pieces come together and the full emotional impact hits you hard. The pace of the story felt a bit slow in the middle and the built-up to the final revelation by Connor and Micah seemed to take a long time, but the ending beautifully tied everything together. I also loved how we get a brief story of Lavender Shore's past and I would dearly love to read a story focusing on Lavender Shore's creation after WWII.

4.5 stars and a Recommended Read for The Hideaway, and here's hoping there are more Lavender Shores books to come!

I’ve jumped out of order by reading this one. I started with books 1 and 2 but the content of those left me really wanting Connor’s and Lamont’s, respectively, stories. And now after reading this one, I really want Seth’s story (why is he book 9?).
I’m on the fence with my rating for this one so I’m going with 3.5 stars. It didn’t wow me the way I expected. There are things about it that I really liked and things that I really hated. While I went into this drawn to Connor, I was a tad bit disappointed with him. Until he finally came around to what he wanted with Micah, he was so wrapped up in trying to have it both ways. He so morally against a relationship with Micah, but he had no problem dropping his pants the moment Micah so much as breathed in his direction. The whole scene in the hideaway when he finally reached clarity while listening to Micah play his violin was, for the most part, beautifully written but Connor’s head conversation starting tripping over itself and things became a bit muddled for me. I also liked the mature and responsible way Connor dealt with his nephew, Moses. There was nothing rushed or glossed over; it just felt real.
Now Micah is where things head downhill for me. From his brief appearances in the first two books, I entered this one feeling neutral about him. But I found his behavior to be way too slutty for ths situation. In this respect he was almost a duplicate of his brother Gilbert; both unapologetic about bedding any man that was breathing. But where it differed, and why it bothered me, is that Gilbert was never leading anyone on or claiming to be in love, until Walden. Micah, however, claims that Connor is “the only man” he ever really loved, but yet, while he’s spending all this energy to convince Connor of the rightness of their relationship, he’s sleeping around with many many men, including “dating” Seth and going back and forth between Seth’s bed and Connor’s. Wow, what a way to convince a man he’s the only one for you!
There was some beautiful prose in this book but a lot of it got lost in the noise and repetitiveness of Micah’s and Connor’s respective head conversations. The wrap up of telling the family and them all coming around seemed rushed and glossed over. The only heartfelt conversation was with their parents, Patrick and Regina, and then paragraphs later, everything was right in the world. Overall, a good story with some good writing, but I was still left feeling a bit disappointed by the anticlimactic nature of it all.

Rosalind Abel does it again and offers a new couple to vie for your favorite vote.
A long winding, sometimes painful journey for Connor and Micah, adopted brothers, friends, and silent soulmates. We have seen both Connor and Micah on the edges of the Bryant family in the past books. Participating in the festivities, the conviviality, but somehow always guarded and wary. Not enough for the founding families to notice, but the reader has noticed.
Micah Bryant, violin child prodigy, plays with the New York symphony, but has relinquished a full-time position to open The Green Violin, selling organic produce to restaurants and residents. Not content to be a full-time shopkeeper, Micah works the fields to connect with summer memories of his childhood and find a peace. Music and the earth are two of his great loves. One additional love has never been shared with his family.
Connor Clark adopted at 13 by the Bryants, a founding family of Lavender Shores, is an imposing 6’6”, tattooed, and whimsically nick named ‘pygmy goat.’ The artist in Connor has created a tattoo parlor which is looks more like a trendy, designer spa. Connor has designed a fanciful heart of Lavender flowers and waves which is worn by the families to show support for Conner who is staunchly loyal to the Bryant and Carter families. Connor too harbors a secret, one he cannot admit or walk away from and curses his weakness.
Away from the perfectly turned out downtown and fanciful homes of Lavender Shores, Connor and Micah have their private hideaway. A place where nothing matters except their desire and need for one another. Their story is complex, created by Connor’s own hesitation and angst, aided by Micah’s belief that he can have it all…somehow.
You may not find Lavender Shores on a map, but you can virtually walk along the palisades, smell the salt in the air, and feel the fog on your face while your imagination is thoroughly captivated with longing for this perfect place and the uniquely fascinating occupants. If the Lavender Shores stories are new or warmly familiar, THE HIDEAWAY is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rosalind hit this one out of the park!

Easily my favourite of the Lavender Shores series! There are two scenes that happen in two vastly different places that made the whole book for me. They drew me in and kept me mesmerised the whole time, and one in particular I could almost see myself there. I won't give spoilers but hopefully you get the same goose bumps and hot flushes I did LOL!

Not much else to say other than Rosalind hit this one out of the park. Right up there with my favourites of the year.
