The Labyrinth of Power: By The Former Director of the Mossad Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

The Labyrinth of Power is a book written by a soldier, commander and statesman, who has recorded grand chapters in Israel's struggle for security and peace. Danny Yatom filled a number of senior, sensitive and classified positions in the security forces and in the civil service; from soldier and commander in the Israeli commando to Major General in the IDF, director of the Mossad and Head of the Military-Political staff at the Prime Minister's bureau. Yatom oversaw operations that were crucial for the State of Israel's security, and was one of the main partners in the diplomatic negotiations in which Israel participated in the last decades in an effort to achieve peace. Throughout his life Yatom took part in several of the central crossroads that determined the fate of Israel. In his book The Labyrinth of Power he reveals, for the first time, hidden details about intriguing affairs, and talks about the leaders he knew firsthand—prime ministers, defense ministers, Arab leaders, presidents and statesmen from around the world. This is a brave book, not without criticism, but also full of love and appreciation for those under whom Yatom served, first and foremost Yitzhak Rabin. This book is filled with new reveals, including the letter that detailed the agreements between Israel and Syria, which was transferred to Bill Clinton by Ronald Lauder, Prime Minister Netanyahu's emissary, in which it was explicitly written: "Israel will withdraw its forces to a line that will be mutually agreed upon by Israel and Syria, based on the line of the fourth of June 1967."
Major General (Ret.) Danny Yatom was born in Netanya in 1945. In the IDF he served in the special forces and received a Medal of Bravery. He also filled many roles in the security forces and government, including head of the IDF's Planning Directorate, commander of the Central Command, military secretary to defense ministers Arens and Rabin and prime ministers Rabin and Peres. Mr. Yatom served as director of the Mossad and as head of the Military-Political staff at the prime minister's bureau under Ehud Barak. He was elected to the Israeli parliament twice as a member of the Labor Party and graduated from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in mathematics, physics and computer science. He is married to Tova, and they have five sons and six grandchildren.

Very detailed on the negotiations between Barak and Arafat at Camp David. The difficulties in sealing that peace plan are still relevant today.

Received item on time and in good condition. A lot of material is covered in the book.

The first part of the book gives the impression that the author tries to "settle the accounts" of mishaps that happended under his leadership.

I enjoyed the professional descriptions of the events that happened under Danny Yatoms leadership, eventhough one can feel the hand of censorship while reading the book, as no details of operations, means, locations or operatives are mentioned. (For example that they used poison in the jordanian operation...)

The book is well written and seems to be well translated from hebrew to english. It is quite thick and therefore a bit uncomfortable to read, but it is written in a exciting way so you dont want to put it out of your hand so quick ;).

A certain leftist political view cannot be denied, especially when it comes to his descriptions of politicians. But in the special descriptive way of writing the author uses, it does not come trough as an attempt to undermine the person, but as a certain irony that is understandable if you follow the authors point of view.

"Labyrinth of Power" is certainly a book that gives you an impression of what is going on in the daily live of politicians and securtiy officials in Israel and their hardship in taking very though decisions for the security of the people in Israel.

I took off one star because I am disappointed that even information that was publicised in the media and is well-known was censored out.
