3.7 out of 5 stars 202 ratings

He sides with the weak. His punishment is top spot on the killer’s ‘to-do’ list. Will he notice he’s next before it’s too late? Will he run, fight – or just roll over and accept the inevitable?
Lukas Novak's oldest friend Tibor has just dropped dead under suspicious circumstances. And now Lukas doesn’t trust the staff at Tibor’s last residence, Fairhaven care home.
Smelling a rat he swiftly takes action, ready to put noses out of joint. Hot on the trail of a sinister conspiracy and a death toll of 10 corpses in 10 weeks, he stumbles straight into the arms of the home’s enigmatic faith counsellor, who promises Lukas’s lost soul instant salvation. A call to invite his ‘Guardian Angel’ into his life drives Lukas to the edge of sanity, paranoid he could be marked a serial killer’s next victim.

Lukas’s hidden vigilante streak seeks justice for the weak and innocent in this gritty British crime thriller. His hunt to expose a sick and deadly scam leads him high into the Swiss Alps to confront the pursuing evil and face a noxious family secret.
Will he be able to outsmart the killer in time to save his own life?

Almost stopped reading about 1/2 way through, which is unusual for me. Pacing in this book is a problem. The plot becomes ever more convoluted and bogs down. To get the stage set, Lukas must act in ways that are ever more difficult for the reader to accept. At the point where the author has the stage set, Lucas's actions had become so unbelievable that I nearly abandoned the book. I soldiered on and gradually the author and Lukas dug their way out. However, the justifications used for the twists of the plot were far from sufficient. To many openly transparent plot holes, blindly accepted by the protagonist. To many early suspicions and red flags simply set aside as if Lukas were 18, not a grown man used to living a life of subterfuge and misdirection. Even near the end of the book as Lukas stumbles on the portions of the truth that were self evident for a hundred pages, his actions are utterly, almost criminally, stupid.

My initial reaction was 2.5 stars, but ultimately I rounded up. At this point I'm reluctant to try this author again. I'll certainly wait until there are a number of reviews.

I enjoyed reading this book. The storyline is very good. The actions of the main character are unrealistic. They fit the plot but not what a real person would do in these situations. I will read one more in the series to see if the characters improve. If not I'm done.

When the death of a family friend leads journalist Lukas Novak to investigate a cluster of strange deaths in a nursing home, he uncovers a diabolical scheme with roots deep in the past.

This is a prequel to MATCH GAMES, a full length Lukas Novak mystery. That book kept me on my toes from first page to last. THE LAST COVERT has the same complex characterization and an equally intricate plot. We get to meet Lukas in a dark hour. His marriage is over and his wife is bent on alienating him from his children and ruining him financially. Poor guy can't take a breath without fear that something negative will be reported back to her attorney and used to bankrupt him. To be fair, Lukas has spent his whole marriage hiding the fortune he inherited from his famous brother, a rock star whose recordings still bring in a tidy sum long after his unhappy death.

The point here is that Lukas is in a fragile frame of mind as the book opens during the funeral of a close friend. This emotional vulnerability clouds his judgement as he investigates the events surrounding the man's death and the surprising beneficiaries of his will. I don't want to tell too much. I'll just say Lukas isn't prepared for the extent of the conspiracy he's stumbled upon. Nor is he aware how deep in the past the seeds of the crime are buried. The villain behind it all isn't just some murdering con man out to get his hands on the victims' worldly goods. There's a deep pathology involved. A terrible history that will repeat and repeat unless Lukas can put a stop to it. And it's not clear that he'll be able to do that.

It's amazing to me how much character and suspense Schirmer packs into this relatively short work. Yet the pacing is right on. There's no sense that she's cramming in plot points or forcing the action.

THE LAST CONVERT is a gritty and action-packed thriller that will keep your heart pounding until the very end.

I quit reading after six chapters, because the story seemed not to have any mystery to that point and certainly no thriller aspects. That seems to me to be too long before introducing elements of mystery and thrills. If there's a mystery, it might be in the characterizations. It comes across as a romantic drama (emphasis on drama) during these beginning chapters. The main character's mood seemed morose and self-pitying. I was disappointed.

Hitchcockian in nature, a very good read, it took me less than a day. Transparent in its early going, takes some unexpected turns in the last third of the book. I'll be reading more by this author.

I loved this thriller taking lots of unexpected twists and turns. I've enjoyed the different settings having actually been to some of them myself and especially loved the use of German words in the book. An intriguing character and I am looking forward to hearing more of Lukas Novak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling and very satisfying run of novels
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 5, 2021
At last, an older, awkward, overweight and conflicted hero that I can really identify with. He has a rich and intriguing back history which is almost as fascinating as that of the author herself. Well researched, brilliant and occasionally brutal storytelling - Ghost Cargo is especially good. Each novel and novella is exceptional in
its own right, covering a diverse number of topics and locations and involving all manner of nastiness, corruption, debauchery and duplicity. I hope there are many, many more stories in the Lukas Novak series and I’m desperate to know what is to become of him, Dannii and Mark. And do the “I am Legion” assassins get him?

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, menacing, well written
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2023
At first, I thought I was getting into a police-procedural, but I soon found myself on much more dangerous and unpredictable territory, with a protagonist with only his own resourcefulness and a supportive friend against an increasing sense of menace - and the dangers of his own character flaws. All in all, much more interesting and exciting than a sturdy copper righting wrongs.

The writing here is nicely economical, the characters believable, and the situations they get into are frequently nerve-jangling. There is some ingenious plotting, unexpected turns, and no disappointments. This is just the first of a series – one I shall follow with interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to get into but well written

Couldn't really get into this as I didn't find it easy to relate to the main character but it was well written and I'm sure will appeal to many others. It's just me being me.. If I can't get into a book by the second chapter then I tend to abandon it

Read this book in three and a half hours.Couldn't put it down.Although it did leave some questions unanswered it certainly didn't detract from the story.I must admit that the twists and turns kept me guessing making me want to read more and more.I won't reveal anything of the story itself as I think spoilers do just that.

4.0 out of 5 stars a 'voodoo doctor' (for want of a better description) and a German diplomat
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 15, 2016
This is a prequel to a book that I haven't yet read - and that may account for why I found it hard work to start with. The protagonist (a hard-drinking seemingly non-working idler, separated from his wife and children) was initially as much at sea as I felt - but once I broke through this became a real page-turner. The short chapters may have helped but the plot in the second half is distinctly fast-moving - literally so as we travel from Manchester to Zurich and then to a remote location in the Swiss Alps. Along the way we encounter a psychic, a 'voodoo doctor' (for want of a better description) and a German diplomat, plus sundry villains and (Swiss) police.

I'm looking forward to reading the next in the sequence (which somewhat curiously seems to be 'under construction', as is episode 4, though 3 and 5 are available... ). I should add that I didn't pay for this title.
