4.3 out of 5 stars 922 ratings

Love is on the line in Regency England! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Can Vicky foil the plans of a shameless fortune hunter?

Regency England

After breaking off her engagement, Society belle Vicky Seymour decides to return to her childhood home in the countryside.

On the way, she crosses paths with the menacing
Andrew Massingham, about to elope with naïve young heiress Drucilla Hedgely.

Believing Andrew to be an unscrupulous fortune hunter, Vicky decides to take Drucilla with her. Furious at the desertion, he soon chases after them.

But when disaster strikes, Andrew and Vicky are forced into uncomfortably close quarters. Each wilful and accustomed to having control, their personalities soon start to clash.

And though Vicky believes herself incapable of falling in love, it may prove difficult to protect her heart…

The Luckless Elopement by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency Romance with a witty, spirited heroine.

I really needed a great story today. I spent the last several days wading through Evelina by Fanny Burney, a beautiful book ( Jane Austen’s favorite!) about the most inept, incompetent, naive, put upon, frightened, completely useless “heroine” ever put to paper. Vicky is exactly the opposite. She knows her own mind and isn’t afraid to act to gain happiness for herself and those she cares about, including shooting a highwayman, assisting the doctor in surgery, riding bareback in breeches, and saving an injured man’s life. If that isn’t enough she tries her hand at matchmaking. The only thing missing here is that moment between Sir Hugh and his silent admirer which would have tied up every loose end. The men are manly, the woman are beautiful, but more importantly, admirable. Even little Drucilla rises to every challenge to escape her stifled upbringing, and Aunt Hetty is a treasure. I read it in one sitting. The writing is wonderful. It ended too soon. Enjoy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! 4.5-5 stars! I would enjoy rereading this one. Dorothy Mack does a great job with character development. I went from disliking Andrew Massington to rooting for him quickly. I just only wish we had one more session with his POV post-shadow to emphasize his change in his thinking about women but I get why she didn’t, it led to far greater tension in the plot. Delightful tension! This is completely clean but still manages to create some wonderful chemistry between Vicky and Andrew. Well done!

So like the broken engagement at the heart of the premise, I think this books has all the right parts to it but is essentially lacking. I'm not to be sure a fan of they hate each other now love each other stories--without a lot of explanation. There is a lot of assumptions I find problematic for a modern reader, that the male should be older than the female (that even a couple of months difference in youth is too much) and that misogynistic men who see women only for their own purposes will suddenly settle down to be good husbands is they are in love. And I think also men admiring women women's strength is worship and bad for marriage but women admiring male strength and worship is perfectly acceptable.I mean really people this is 2021. It is one thing for characters to say it but quite another to structure your plot on this concept and not do enough work to explain.

It is true that you can like and respect someone and that not turn to love but like and respect is not an anathema to chemistry.

The book throws in a third monkey wrench and then gives him nothing to do. Moreover, he's the only man who seems to actually respect her as she is (in the little lines he does get) for her true accomplishments. But he's too boring and unromantic supposedly...

There is a lot of ways this could go I'd accept. But the way that was chosen seemed predictable and unearned. I don't think it would have taken much to make it earned, just don't rely on sexist tropes. And yeah as others said, the ending was confusing, abrupt and totally out of character. It was almost as if there was a need to say, well you know women, we aren't really that brave you know.

Still many readers may be able to overlook this (or believe the tropes themselves) and will enjoy it. For those I'd rate it higher than a three.

No deep plotting, just couples sorting themselves out, with flowing prose, well written dialogue, nicely drawn characters, some fresh presentation of old tropes. I'll read more by this author, when I wish for something engaging and, ultimately, fairly light.

Written very much like a Georgette Heyer book. Vicky is a smart and quick witted woman that kept me guessing what she would say. Very progressive woman for her time yet very much a lady. Kept me guessing for quite a while on who would end up with whom.

Starts in London then the journey, residing at a country estate makes for more interacting with main couple, character driven.

This is a really accomplished story . Each of the people in the people in the book has a distinctive character , they are witty and reasonable and behave in a believable way. The plot is well worked out.
It may be the reprint of an old book, but I wish that more modern authors took such care.

Loved this book from Dorothy Mack. She has such a good imagination, her stories are so different to others. This one has a feisty heroine which was fun to read. My only criticism is the constant accidents. Gunshots, carriages overturning and sprained ankles were far too prevalent.

Thoroughly enjoyable read! Though I wish we had been given a little more insight into the character and thought processes of the male protagonist. But overall worthy of 5 stars.

This is an excellent read if you like regency fiction. Thank goodness the author does not waste pages of meaningless words which make no difference to the story but has instead written a well-structured, interesting story. The characters are likeable and well-rounded; period detail has been woven throughout the book which adds to the overall timbre. A thoroughly enjoyable read and an absolute relief after some of the stories that appear in this genre. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I disremember reading SUCH a fun and frolicsome romance after my favourite Georgette Heyers. Daredevil heroine, dark and brooding hero, amusing situations, horses, misunderstandings, broken engagements and match-makings and even a spirited aunt. How I enjoyed reading this one!
