4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 511 ratings

If you love cyber hackers, bodyguards, spies, and steamy MM romance, look no further. The Locked & Loaded Series is for you.

I spent most of my life in the Special Forces before a career-ending bullet in Kandahar. Now I work as personal security for the most famous rock star on the planet. I live full-throttle in every man's dream. Why would any man want to change that?

But the minute I saw him, it all changes. I never expected to fall so hard for a one-night stand, but there's no way to escape my desire for Leland.

I don't want a job guarding his child.
I don't want to be involved in her father's mysterious life.
Why am I doing both?

The Manny is my first book by Susan Ward, but won't be my last. This is a male/male romance book, so it may not be for everyone. This is a fairly short read, a great choice for those with limited time for reading. Ms Ward has delivered a well-written book. The characters are perfect for this story, I especially loved the interaction with the kids. Graham and Leland's story is full of drama, humor and m/m sizzle. I enjoyed reading The Manny and look forward to reading more from Susan Ward in the future. The Manny is book 1 of the Locked & Loaded Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

The Manny by Susan Ward, Reviewed by Kim Gray
This story was surprisingly a delight to read, and I feel I need to point out that this was my first M/M read and I went into this book without any expectations and an open mind. I found myself really liking Graham, he was such a cool guy, strong, very demanding yes, but he had a soft spot and kids was one of them, even though he wouldn’t admit that. I think if I knew him in person we would be friends, as in he would be the best guy to be my protector, and I would enjoy trying out new recipes on him. I really connected with him. Graham is such an Alpha male that knows what he wants and is confident enough with himself to take control when he needs to and let go when he cares to. I found myself smiling and at points having a little giggle and next I was fanning my face because the scene was so hot.
The story line, plot of this book was well written and put together, I wanted to keep reading because the story was very intriguing. For me it’s always more enjoyable if there is a realistic and mysterious story line that keeps me guessing and wanting to find out. This book did that for me.
When Graham meets the one, he is as well a very Dominant man and they click like a spark of lightening that neither want to ignore. What happens next is when I was hooked and kept reading to the end. I would go on more about how much I enjoyed this book but it’s difficult without giving too much away. (at least for me) I was gifted this book and so I wanted to leave an honest review. I’d give this book a 4 stars. Thanks for writing this book.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the main character, Graham, for the first half of the book. He is gorgeous, conceited but honest and direct. I enjoyed meeting his mother and enjoyed his adventures in bed. Yes, when you get to half of the book the other main character, Leland, appears. I hated him and nothing he did changed my opinion. The relationship between Leland and Graham starts out as a lie. Leland bullies Graham, lies to him, omits important facts and basically treats him like a whore. Graham apparently loses all his confidence, control and self respect when Leland is around and I don't understand why. Why these two fall in love is a mystery to me. The author made Leland so unlikable that I wished someone would kill him and put me out of my misery. I won't be reading the sequel to this book unless it features Graham leaving Leland for someone else.

One super macho bodyguard, former Special Forces fighter, Graham Carson is at wit's end when this story begins. He is finishing a 7 year assignment and has become very attached to the children he was guarding. Too attached and he can't make or have commitments. This is his life, staying fit and strong, guarding bodies and decompressing with sex every opportunity possible. Graham is ruled by overwhelming guilt regarding the death of his sister Olivia, killed when she was 18. If he hadn't come out when he was 14, he would not have been sent away to 'become' a man and he could have protected her. That is what he does now, protect, but protecting children is too hard and despite his desire to get back out there, there are no assignments waiting. He will not guard children. Graham flounders around a bit, trying to figure out what comes next...to avoid a spoiler, his next opportunity is rather unexpected and the interview rather dramatic.

The references to another story, within this story, "Black Balled" by Smith & LeNoir was enjoyed and in fact, led me on to another literary opportunity. Although this story continues in a subsequent book, it didn't end in a cliffhanger and I didn't feel cheated.. There were certainly unanswered questions, and I was engaged to continue the story. This is my first read by Susan Ward and now, on to my second. Cover by Sara Eirew, wonderful!

This is an excellent beginning to a new series. The internal dialog Graham runs through is insightful, sometimes humerus and thoroughly self absorbed alpha. I really enjoy "listening" to him.
The dynamic between him and his mother is often times frustrating to Graham but ultimately hilarious. Undoubtedly there will be more interaction between mother and son in future books.
Leland is more often frustrating in his lack of any useful information given to Graham so he knows what he should prepare for in their move to Mexico. He has been hired as a bodyguard for Leland's young daughter Ella. But what other dangers he might face are still a mystery.
That Graham and Leland are involved is a given. Their dynamic is Hot. Can't wait for the next book in this riveting series.

Oh the mother of all cliffhangers!!!

This book was gripping from the get go. It was highly entertaining and wonderfully written.

Graham has lived his life without any attachments and so far that has worked well. His job makes it hard to totally commit to one person which has never bothered him before. He suddenly finds himself single and unemployed and this puts things into perspective making Graham restless and with a sense of loneliness and foreboding he hasn't felt before.

A chance encounter with a gorgeous man brings Graham out of his funk and into the arms of Leland; the complete opposite of Graham, "Lee" has had the love of a husband and a daughter, but has also experience loss and betrayal.

Things suddenly aren't so serendipitous and both men will have a common goal. Leland seems to be able to express his feelings better than Graham who struggles with Trust and control and has to decide if going for what he craves is truly the path to happiness.

I was hooked from the very first page. There are so many unresolved things which I'm dying to get the answer to in the next instalment. Filled with twists, turns and plenty of MM steamy moments are what make this book a MUST READ!!

The first half of this book focuses on ex military turned bodyguard Graham. We meet Leland halfway through the boom and then it heats up between then. I felt like less time could have been spent on Graham’s prior job and time with his mum so we could have had more time at the end with Leland Graham and Ella. Otherwise the book was good, lots of laughs and loads of heat in the room!

Graham Carson is an arrogant, difficult man who is initially hard to like. He sleeps with several great guys but never gives them the chance to get any closer. Initially a hard character to like, the story expands and gives you more of an understanding into the man behind the gruff exterior. When he meets Leland, a man who wont take no for an answer, there is finally hope at some happiness if he will just put his suspicions aside. Leland is hiding something, but is it as bad as Graham is thinking??

I wanted to shake Graham several times through this book as he continues to push people away and lets his crazy suspicions get in the way. If he just let Leland, and his mother, in, surely he would be a lot happier. An excellent start to the series!!
