About the author

A former teacher, Lynette gave up her career in education a few years ago in order to focus on her writing and thus fulfil her childhood dream. She writes contemporary women's fiction, often involving romance with suspense or a supernatural twist. She claims 'Killing Jenna Crane', a romantic thriller and 'Unworkers' a modern ghost story/women's fiction are her personal favourites to date. A more recent release,'The Nightclub' is a romance packed with suspense, while her latest story 'Cocktails and Lies' marks a slight departure from contemporary romance into the realms of cozy mystery. You can find more details of all her novels on her website: http://www.lynettesofras.com. In the meantime, why not download her first, award-winning contemporary romance 'The Apple Tree' free from Amazon.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this glimpse inside the world of nightclubs and crime. Trying not to give away too much of the book. But it is great how the characters are developed and the family dynamics come into play. I never thought how I would act around nobility. It is really fun to put yourself in the mix. I might not know how to say uncle in Chinese, but I can be smooth. And it is a good thing I don’t smoke. Read the book and you will know why. A few days of very enjoyable reading. Thanks!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2014Format: KindleThe cover and blurb for this book had me eager to read, and I was not disappointed!
Heroine Laura and her younger sister, Bibi, are about to be turned out of their seedy apartment (they are in hiding from abusive family members - Laura is only able to get sporadic temp work, and Bibi is still not eighteen) when a sultry lesbian neighbor helps her get a job as "hostess" in a local nightclub (read strip bar). A moderately famous singer Tina also routinely sings there, and Laura has hopes that somehow she can get some help from Tina for Bibi, as Bibi is musically talented both in playing piano and singing (it is Bibi on the cover, not Laura). Laura quickly finds out that "hostessing" is just as nasty as she thought it would be yet maintains her dignity with effort, while refraining from being pressured into turning tricks for extra cash (hostessing isn't lucrative). She is about to be fired after refusing to strip by the owner, Mel, at which point our hero Julian, Mel's brother, intervenes as he is taking over the club from Mel and says she can keep working there. Just why Mel is leaving town is a ket part of the plot, which is complex and at times suspenseful. While I knew there was going to be a happy ending, I didn't see how there was going to be one that didn't feel contrived and still covered all the bases. I was surprised and very much enjoyed the ending, which made perfect logical sense and yet I never saw it coming!
This was a much darker tale than I expected from Ms. Sofras, and I like the way she handled the subject matter, in that I didn't feel dirty afterwards even thought the story goes to some very dark places. Its nice to meet a heroine with some integrity who has gone through some terrible times and isn't falling into despair because of them, even if she has to make some hard choices along the way. The only thing that didn't feel quite right was Laura's naivety regarding how drugs can be passed from source to buyer, but as she's young, that was explainable.
A very good story, one I look forward to rereading! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2016Format: KindleI loved reading The Nightclub by Lynette Sofras. Fantastic story of Laura and her teenage sister, they are trying to survive. Like the blurb says she excepts a job as a hostess in a nightclub while working her temp job during the day. It seems that the boss has left and his brother is now taking over the nightclub, pretty much the same time Laura started working there. She started working there because her neighbor advised her of the job. It is not a good place to work, especially young naïve Laura. She is lucky that the boss Julian seemed to notice something about her and kept an eye on her, like a Knight in shining armor.
The story is well written and enjoyable, I was not bored reading it, there is some UK slang in the story since that is where this story is located and I like that. I loved the character’s Laura and her sister Bibi. I feel this story all comes together and has perfecting timing. I didn’t get lost reading this story, there are quite a few characters but they were written in fantastically.
If you want to read an interesting story, with some adventure and also having to figure out who is the bad guy, this is a great story to read. I love the authors writing style and can’t wait to read more of her stories. This story even though there are drugs, and drinking, and a strip club, there really isn't any sex scenes. This story is a fairly clean store with the adventures of a new nightclub owner and trying to clean it up. I want to thank the Author for sending me an ARC to review and I can honestly say I loved reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2014Format: KindleI was given the opportunity to read this book by the author, and boy am I glad I did!
It begins by describing a couple of young girls trying to survive on their own, reusing tea bags to scrimp and barely make it on Laura's tiny wages as a temp. Laura does her best to keep a strong front for her step sister Bibi, but she's truly worried that they will be found out and returned to the abusive situation they have been running from.
In her innocence, Laura takes a position in a nightclub as a hostess, much to her revulsion. The silver lining in taking the second job is that she meets Julian, the club owner's younger brother, who is thrust into the nightclub manager against his better judgment when his brother runs off. Julian quickly learns what type of shady business his brother has allowed to take place within the club the hard way just as Laura gets sucked in by doing a favor for her neighbor/coworker Petra.
As Bibi studies for her school exams, and practices her piano and singing, the danger grows and the true nature of shady dealings at the club emerge. No one is safe. Laura begins to trust Julian and his friend Beaver as this thrilling story unfolds.
I was constantly on the edge of my seat as the story began to develop. The characters were very believable, and I had immediate compassion for them and their situation. I was never bored and absolutely could not put this book down. I have read every book that Lyn has written, some multiple times! She is excellent at her craft and weaves a very good story every time. I can't wait for her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Light after Darkness
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis novel may come as a surprise to readers of The Apple Tree and Shopping for Love. There is romance for sure but darker themes underlie the story. The heroine Laura abducts her step-sister Bibi (placing herself on the wrong side of the law) to help her escape from her step-father who has already subjected Laura to systematic sexual abuse. What is shocking is that Bibi’s mother is aware of the abuse and tuns a blind eye to it. For those working in welfare organisations this aspect of incest is all too familiar. The author has touched here on a social issue, showing how innocent girls can have their lives damaged by predatory males. Indeed when Laura falls in love with a decent man it takes time and patience on his part to overcome her inhibitions.
Another dark theme is the drug dealing that Laura is drawn into unawares by a woman who poses as a friend. The novel shows the sinister side of drug dealing and how innocent people can be used by unscrupulous people and their lives placed at risk when they try to cut themselves free. The kidnapping episode introduces excitement and suspense to an already gripping story. The author moves the action forward by dramatic dialogue and the minimum of description. This story rings true and has a contemporary feel that makes it seem frighteningly real. Nevertheless, it finishes on an optimistic note that should please all readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I started reading, I confess I wasn't expecting the kind of story this turned out to be. I was immediately drawn into the story of Laura and Bibi, sisters who are escaping a dark past and end up with their lives in the hands of kindly club owner Julian. But Julian himself is deeply involved with the dark legacy left by his brother Mel, which drags them all into its net. Julian's side of the story was especially entertaining - I found it easy to engage with him and his nerdy friends Beaver and Bootlace and root for them to solve the mystery of Mel's sudden disappearance and what exactly was happening in Ferriby's nightclub. The characters were great, the dialogue very realistic and the story held my interest throughout so I found myself constantly wanting to finish the next chapter before putting the book down. The story, told through the key characters was well-paced and held my interest throughout. I thoroughly recommend it for a fast but engrossing read.
